This learning material is designed to guide you in learning at

your own pace. To start with, talk with your trainer and agree on
how you will both organize the training for this module. Most
probably your trainer will also be your supervisor or manager.
He/she is there to support you and guide you the correct way to
do things. From time to time you will be required to practice and
demonstrate the skills that you’ve learned from this module and
you will be requiring some assistance from your trainer (as
instructed in the learning material).
To proceed with the learning session you just have go through
the Learning Activity Sheet where in you will follow series of
learning instructions towards attaining the learning outcome.
For example:
The learning instruction states that you are to perform
Exploring modules “Drive Passenger Bus”. The instruction
sheet needed is Information Sheet 1 with the title Manage
Different Types of Driving Hazards & located at page 7 of this
learning material. Below the learning instruction is a short
description of the instruction sheet. Special instructions which
you may need to follow while doing this activity may also be
found in this section, if there are any.
This procedure should be repeatedly done until you have
completed all the learning elements in this Competency-Based
Learning Module or until such time that you are ready to take the
final assessment for this module. You may skip some learning
activities if you can demonstrate that you are competent enough
on the said task/s.
At the end part of this module is a Learner’s Diary. Use
this diary to record important dates, jobs undertaken and other
workplace events that may provide further details to your
trainer or assessor. A Record of Achievement will be provided
to you by your trainer for you to accomplish once you complete
the module.
Upon completion of this module, study the evidence plan at the
end of the last learning element of this module then ask your
instructor to assess you. You will be given a certificate of
completion as proof that you met the standard requirements
(knowledge, skills and attitude) for this module. The assessment
could be made in different methods, as prescribed in the
competency standards.
If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask your instructors for
assistance. Your instructor will always be available to assist you
during the training.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may already have some or most of the knowledge and
skills covered in this module because you have:
 been working for some time
 already completed training in this area

If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent

in particular skill, talk to him/her about having them formally
recognized so you would not have to undergo the same
training again. If you have a qualification or Certificate of
Competency from previous trainings, show it to your trainer. If the
skills you acquired are still current and relevant to this module,
they may become part of the evidence you can present for RPL. If
you are not sure about the level of your skills, discuss this with
your trainer.

Introduction
Graphic designers are artists who create visual messages for print
publications and electronic media. Designers produce advertising
layouts, promotional materials and illustrations for businesses,
magazines, newspapers and journals. Graphic designers can be
employees or work on a freelance or contract basis to meet the
needs of their clients.
Working Conditions
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "graphic designers
employed by large advertising, publishing, or design firms
generally work regular hours in well-lighted and comfortable
settings." Some designers work in close proximity to one another,
causing their work environment to be more congested. Self-
employed graphic designers have the freedom to create a design
studio or office that is comfortable and inspirational. Freelance
designers work as many hours are necessary to meet client
deadlines and individual goals.

Qualifications
Designers usually have education and training in fine arts or
graphic design and hold a bachelor's degree or higher in their
discipline. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "a bachelor's
degree in graphic design is usually required for most entry-level and
advanced graphic design positions." Successful designers also
possess creativity and problem- solving skills.

Reflectance

● Reflectance is the property of a surface which is

determined by both color and surface finish, and expressed
as a percentage of light reflected (luminance).
● Luminance is measured by a photometer (pointed at surface).
● Table 6-1 lists reflectances for various colors and surfaces.
● Reflectance is a ration between:
– The measured reflectance of the target surface,
– The measured reflectance of a standard Kodak

Reflectance = 0.9 x Ltarget / Lstandard

Visibility

● Visibility is the clarity with which a human can see an object.

● There are 3 critical factors in visibility:

Page Size and Orientation
Change the page size by typing in new values for width and height.
Page size
represents the final size you want after bleeds or trimming other
marks outside the page. In the Preset dropdown menu you can
find such common sizes as letter, legal, tabloid, etc. Typing in
exact values for Height and Width gives you more control over the
size and orientation of your page.

Resolution
Resolution is a number of pixels on a printed area of an image. The
higher the
resolution, the more pixels there are on the page, the better is the
quality of the image.

However, high resolution increases the size of the file. The standard
recommended
resolution for printed images is 150 - 300, for Web images - 72.

Color Mode
Choose a color mode that will best fit your project. For example,
when making a graphic for a web site, choose RGB. When making
an image for print, choose CMYK.

Background Contents
Choose the background: white, color, or transparent.
When you have entered all of your document settings, click OK.

BASIC IMAGE EDITING

Now that you know how to find your way around in the
Photoshop interface and are
familiar with the most common commands, pallets, and tools,
you can start doing some basic image editing. In the next few
chapters of this tutorial you will learn how to crop, resize,
correct, and sharp/blur your images.

Cropping is one of the most basic editing techniques that can

improve your images.
Cropping helps to bring out the most important features in your
image and focus the
viewers' attention on these features. Cropping also allows you
to make your image a
standard photo size.
There are several ways to crop images in Adobe Photoshop:
1. Cropping with the Crop Tool
2. Cropping to a specific size
3. Cropping with the Marquee
Tool CROPPING WITH THE CROP
TOOL

The Crop Tool allows you to make a precise selection of an

image you wish to edit. To crop with the Crop Tool, follow these
steps:
1. Open the image you wish to crop (see Getting Started for
detailed instructions).
2. Select the Crop Tool from the Toolbox (see Selection
Tools for location and
description).
3. Click on your image once and drag the mouse out to make a
cropping border
(Fig. 1).

4. Resize the border by

dragging the squares at
the sides and corners till you are
satisfied with the way your image
looks.
NOTE: You can also rotate your cropping border. Move the cursor
outside the border, you will see how it turns into a double-headed
arrow (Fig. 2). Drag the arrows in the directions you wish to rotate
your selection.

CROPPING TO A SPECIFIC SIZE

If you wish to print your digital photos or other images on
standard size photo paper, you will have to crop your images to a
specific size, such as 8x10. To crop an image to a specific size, do
the following:

that the border is
constrained - you cannot make it wider or longer than the specified
values (Figure 4).
For example, if you entered 8 for Width and 10 for Height,
whatever size you make the border, the area within it will fit on an
8x10 photo.

Resizing in Photoshop can help you print your images in standard

photo sizes, resize and preserve the high quality of digital photos,
and enlarge small images to a poster size.
RESIZING TO A SPECIFIC SIZE

To resize your image to a preset size, follow the steps below:

1. In the main menu, go to File > New.
2. In the New dialog box, click on the Preset dropdown menu.
You will see several
preset sizes, such as 2x3, 4x6, 5x7, 8x10 with the preset
resolution of 300 ppi
(Fig. 1).

Fig. 1. Preset
size in the
New dialog box

3. Choose the size that you wish and click OK.

NOTE: All the preset sizes are in portrait orientation. If you wish to
resize an image with the landscape orientation, you need to create
your own preset. To create your own size, do the following:
1. Type in the values for Width and Height, for example 7x5.
2. Type in your desired resolution (150 ppi is enough for high
quality printing, and 72 ppi
is good for the web images).
3. Click the Save Preset button
RESIZING DIGITAL PHOTOS

Digital photos usually have large dimensions but low resolution, 72

ppi, which affects their quality when their size is decreased or
increased. When printed, the photos with the changed size will look
pixilated. To resize the digital photos without losing the quality,
follow these steps:

1. Open the digital photo you wish to resize.

ENLARGING
If you want to make your digital photo into a poster size image,
you can do it in the
Image Size dialog box. However, just increasing the dimensions
will make the image appear blurry and pixilated. To enlarge the
image without loosing the quality, follow these steps:
1. Open the digital image you wish to enlarge.
2. In the main menu, go to Image > Image Size.
3. In the Image Size dialog box, make sure the Resample
Image box is checked off and
choose Bicubic Smoother from the dropdown box (Fig. 5).

Arrange elements on page for print media

Introduction
Page layout or page composition is the process of placing and
arranging and rearranging text and graphics on the page. A good
composition is one that is not only pleasing to look at but also
effectively conveys the message of the text and graphics to the
intended audience. There are certain tried and true elements of
page composition that can help insure a successful layout. You may
notice that these page composition tips are closely tied to the
principles of design.

Align All Elements with Each Other or a Grid

Place each text or graphic element on the page so that they have a
visual connection to each other. You can use horizontal or vertical
alignment, align objects along the same edge or center them.
Eyeballing it can work but for complicated layouts, a grid is
helpful. This one composition tip alone can greatly improve the
composition of a page because our eyes and brains crave a certain
amount of order and consistency.

Select a Single Visual or Make Strong Visual Connections

One of the simplest and perhaps most powerful layouts use one
strong visual. However, if using multiple images, keep them
connected both

through alignment and proximity -- grouping the images so that

they form a single visual unit and aligning them in a similar
fashion.
Keep Odd or Even Elements in Balance

Creating the right balance is both about

the number of text and graphics elements and how they are
arranged on the page. Odd numbers tend to create a more
dynamic layout. Use an odd number of visuals, odd numbersof
text columns. Or, create a dynamic layout with
an asymmetrical arrangement of elements. Symmetrical
balance or the use of even elements such as two or four
columns or a block of 4 pictures generally produces a formal,
more static layout.

Divide the Page into Thirds

Related to balance, the rule of thirds suggests that a more pleasing

composition is possible if your arrangement of text and graphics can
be placed using one of these guidelines:

1.) most important elements spaced more or less evenly within

vertical or horizontal thirds
2.) most important elements concentrated in the upper or lower
third of the page
3.) most important elements centered on one of the points where
lines intersect after visually dividing the page into thirds
horizontally and vertically

Add White Space in the Right Place

Just as important as the text and graphics on the page is the empty
space. Cramming too much on the page even if it is perfectly
aligned and balanced and falls within the rule of thirds can ruin a
composition. The page needs visual breathing room. The best
place for white space is around the edges of the page and the
edges of text or graphic elements so it doesn't get trapped in the
middle of the page but increased paragraph, line, and letter
spacing can also improve a layout.

Use Two or More of the Same Design Element

If one is good, two is better? Sometimes, yes. Repetition can come in

the form of consistent use of alignment, using the same colors for
related items (such as pull-quotes or headlines), using the same
style or size of graphics, or simply placing the page numbers in the
same spot throughout a publication.

Emphasize Differences Between Design Elements

While some aspects of page composition involve things that are the same
-- the same alignment, consistent use of color -- it's also a good idea
to do some things differently, to use contrasting elements including
color and alignment. The greater the difference the greater the
contrast and the more effective the layout. Simple examples of
using emphasis include making headlines a great deal bigger than
other text and using a different size or color of text for captions, pull-
quotes, and page numbers.

The following guidelines are intended to assist in preparing digital

artwork for submission to the Print Unit. They are not intended to be
exhaustive or fail safe, but following the simple pointers laid out
below will help to minimise the risk of some common problems which
occur when printing from digital files.

Please note that these guidelines do not cover use of the University
corporate identity. The Publications and Branding Team can advise
on the correct way to present University corporate materials, and
should be consulted in the first instance when you are planning a
print project.

Printing digital images

Printing digital images can be frustrating if you don’t have an

understanding of print quality versus screen quality. A screen
quality image, which looks fine on your monitor, will often look
ragged or pixilated when you print it. This section explains how to
ensure you get the best possible print result from your digital
images, regardless of what computer program you are using to
create your artwork.

There are two types of digital images: vector images and raster
images. Vector images are usually logos or line art graphics and
can be enlarged or reduced in size without affecting the quality of
the printed result. Most images, including digital photographs
(Jpeg being the most common file format), are raster images,
which means that they are made up of a finite number of dots or
pixels. The quality of this type of image when it is printed varies
depending on the size it is printed out at. For example, you might
have a picture file which is 600 pixels by 300 pixels in size – and
this will not change, no matter how much you enlarge or reduce
the size of the picture on the page. So if you make the picture 2
inches wide by 1 inch high, it’s resolution will be 300 dots per inch
(dpi). As a rule of thumb, this is the maximum size you can make
this particular picture without starting to compromise its quality
when it is printed. If you enlarge the picture to 4 inches wide by 2
inches high, its resolution will drop to 150 dpi, because you’ve got
the same number of pixels spread over a greater area. This will
impair the output quality when you print it.

For the purposes of printed publications, all your graphics should be

a minimum of 300 dpi to print cleanly. For large format printing
(e.g. posters) a minimum of 150 dpi is usually acceptable. Web
graphics and screen grabs are usually only 72 dpi, which is screen
quality and looks fine on a monitor, but terrible when you print it
out!

Note: It won’t help you much to use software like Photoshop to

increase the resolution of a web graphic from 72 dpi to 300 dpi – you
can’t improve upon the quality you had in the first place – you need
to ensure that your graphics are set up at the correct resolution from
the start.

Tips to
Make Your Design Files Print-Ready

Timing is critical
Discover your printer’s turnaround times before starting your
project and plan your project milestones accordingly so that you
can get your work into the printer’s hands on schedule. Missing
your deadline could mean that your run can’t go ahead until your
printer has freed up enough free time, which could be anything from
days to weeks.

You should also plan to allow enough time for the printer to run your
job twice, in case there are any errors in printing, machine failures,
and any other unexpected delays. Planning guards against panic
around the deadline and is essential to getting your product printed
and delivered to the client on time and according to specifications.

Embed your fonts for accurate reproduction

You shouldn’t expect your printer to have a huge collection of fonts,
especially the more eccentric ones in your library. In order to
maintain your design’s integrity, embed your fonts directly into the
document that you are printing. This will prevent font substitutions
which can occur when the printer does not have your exact font. As
any designer will know, there is a distinct difference between
Garamond and Bookman, Courier and Times, so it’s well worth
taking the time to include your font files with the document!

Print size matters

One of the most common mistakes made when printing is sending
a document that is too small, which, if not corrected before the
final run, can result in a printout that is fuzzy and lacking in clarity
due to a lack of resolution. It’s imperative that you create your
document the same size as it will be printed in order to avoid this
embarrassing end result. Designing at actual size reduces the
margin for error with graphics, fonts and layout once printed.
Without taking adequate precaution, you’ll soon find that
something that looks great on your screen soon turns into a
design disaster when printed in the large format for which it was
intended.

Proof your document thoroughly

Most designers have been there. You’ve sent your final piece of
work off and had it printed up, only for the client to call you a
couple of days later to tell you that their telephone number or
web address was incorrect. What a nightmare! And one that often
costs you a lot of money, or worse – a damaged reputation. It is
essential that you allow yourself plenty of time to thoroughly proof
your document for any typographical, punctuation and grammatical
errors. Remember that a misplaced comma can dramatically change
the meaning of a sentence, or a missing period or hyphen in an

email address can make it impossible for customers to contact your

client. One of the best ways to proof your copy is to read it
backwards at least once. It may sound illogical, but it makes it
much easier to spot any glaring errors.

Check your image proportions, dimensions and resolution

Your images should fit the size of the document, but even if you get
the actual size of the image correct, don’t forget to check your
resolution is high enough. Discrepancies like bitmapping and quality
degradation can occur in images which are dramatically enlarged
from their original size, a costly mistake resulting in a thoroughly
amateur finished product. In order to get the best results in terms of
finished product, make the resolution of your images 300DPI, the
highest print resolution used at most print shops.

Consistency is key
One of the things that separates a highly successful brand from the
rest is consistency in their presentation and style. With this in mind,
make your margins consistent throughout your work, especially on
multi-page documents. For booklets, page margins need to be
equal on both the inside and outside. When you change something
on one page, make sure that change is repeated on every other
page, as anything else will look awkward and unprofessional. Look
for consistency as part of your final proofing.

Convert your graphic to CMYK

As you would have learned very early on in life, every color in the
rainbow is created with a mixture of cyan, magenta, yellow, and
black. To avoid costly color correction, convert your document from
RGB to CMYK. Despite seeing no differences on screen, the printing
difference is dramatic. It’s a small tip like this that can literally
make or break your design, and save you a pretty penny at the
same time!
Print out a proof
One of the easiest ways to ensure a quality finished item is to print
out a proof of your design and give it to your printer so that they can
clearly see the copy quality, colors, and finishing options which you
wish for your document. You could also provide some notes to add
extra clarity and eliminate any questions which may arise during
the printing process. An

added bonus is that when you provide a proof, it becomes the

printer’s responsibility to live up to your expectations.

Bleeds
A document has bleeds when it is printed to the edges of the paper.
This is a commonly seen practice in flyers and business cards. The
standard bleed for your document should be 3mm to allow for any
variations in printing and cutting.

Software
Printers can accept many document formats, including the usual
culprits like Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, PDF, and Microsoft
Word. However, it’s worth taking the time to make sure that your
documents are in a format which is native to the printer’s
machine – failing to do so could result in a lengthy, costly delay.
Converting non-native files into readable formats usually results in
layout errors, so if this is something you have to do then you’ll
need to proof it all over again.

Introduction

Double Checking Before Getting Things Printed

When you send something off to the printing press this will allow you
to make multiple copies of whatever it is you want to get printed in
good quality and with minimal effort on your part so that they can be
used in marketing or as part of your services and goods. However, it
is very important when doing this that you make sure your content
or images are in as good quality as possible, and if you have left any
typos or other mistakes in the documents that you are getting
printed then these will be present in all of the copies whether they
are sheets of paper or mugs. In turn this then means that you will
have wasted a large amount of money on products or documents
that you can’t
use, and you will then have to dispose of
them. Of course you can use these faulty
copies – but if you do it will damage the
reputation of your business as it will look
like you can’t spell or don’t put the
necessary time and effort into what you
do.

Get it Checked by Multiple People:

Don’t just check what you have made
yourself – you are unfortunately blind to
your own mistakes to an extent which is
often what causes you to make those
errors in the first place. Instead be sure to
pass what you’ve done over to a third
party who can look over the copy with a
fresh eye and who will be more likely to
spot mistakes.

Zoom in and Out: For images, try zooming all the way in and all the
way out first to check for both overarching problems and stray pixels
that you can clean up.

Print it Out: You should print one copy out for yourself as this
way you can pass it around and check over it directly and you’ll be
more likely to spot errors than if they exist only on your computer
screen.

Use the Spell Check: If you’re printing type then you should
make sure to use the spell check in your word processor. Make
sure that you don’t just look for underlines, but that you
actually run the spelling and

grammar check and go through item by item. Don’t take this as

gospel though, as even the most advanced spell checker can miss
some mistakes – particularly if your misspelling spells a new word.

Read Aloud: This then is a strategy to use other than spell

checking – and that’s to read your content aloud. That way you
can hear what it sounds like and whether it flows and you will be
more likely to spot problems – apart from anything else reading
aloud prevents you from skim reading which can cause you to miss
vital errors.

Leave Time: Most important of all is to make sure you leave

plenty of time between when the image or text is complete and
when it needs to be submitted. Don’t make this a last minute rush
because that’s how you gloss over important problems.

How to create Business card

You can make simple business cards or add fancy graphics, a logo
or even a picture of yourself with the right software. There are
application programs to choose from,

Business Card Details:

• All business cards are 100% offset printed

• Three card stock options available
• Pricing includes the option of full bleed
• Cards may be printed horizontally or vertically
• Print in full color on one side or both
• Rounded corners and gloss or UV coating options available
• Available in standard business card size (2” x 3.5”)

Best business cards are able to send a powerful message to

prospective customers. If you want more business you need to
improve your image. Your business card is the first place to start, as
it creates strong first impression about the company and can
impact final decision making of your potential clients.

10 most common business card mistakes:

1. Does not stand out or evoke positive feelings.

2. Does not clearly define a type of business or services you offer
3. Does not have correct order and placement of important information
4. It's too cluttered or too disorganized
5. Missing important information
6. Poor quality
7. Does not use good color or color combinations
8. Does not use proper size and type of font

9. Does not have a company slogan or unique selling proposition
10. Is not used or distributed enough

Best Business Cards Tips:

1. Create and use your company logo

If you want to build a strong company and generate large profits,
you should invest in the logo. It's highly recommended to apply
feng shui 5 elements principles when you create your logo. Feng
shui principles help to create well balanced, harmonious and
prosperous logo, not just any logo!

2. Choose a company name that clearly specifies your business

It's another powerful way of marketing your business and making
your company stand out from the crowd. A good company name is
short, sharp and makes an instant positive connection with your
customers. For instance, Gargas Roofing Inc is preferable to
Gargas Services Inc

3. Create a slogan or unique selling proposition

Best business cards include short tagline that makes the company
unique and memorable. Good example is Nike slogan Just Do It!
Or you can tell your customers why they should do the business
with you. For instance: Family Operated and Owned Since 1990 or
We Do and Guarantee Our Work.

4. Be careful how you arrange information on your business card

Information placement is one of the most important but very
often overlooked element of successful business card design.
Use Feng shui principles to avoid costly mistakes.

5. Use Color
Colors are very important to us and good color combination of
your business card can evoke immediate positive response and
create emotional bond with your clients. If you need help, feng
shui business colors and their properties can help you to select the
best colors for your business goals.

INFORMATION SHEET 2.6-1
Produce printer-ready
Learning Objectives:
After reading this information sheet, you must be able to
Produce printer-ready.

Printer as machine
Desktop printer refers to the actual piece of hardware including dot
matrix printers, laser printers, and inkjet printers used in homes and
businesses. These desktop printers are usually small enough to fit on
a desk or table. Businesses may also use larger floor-model printers.
Again, these are equipment used to print documents on paper or
transparencies or other materials.
With a desktop printer, a digital file is sent to a printer connected to a
computer (or its network) and the printed page is available in a
short while.

Printer as person
The commercial printer is actually a business and its owner and/or
employees who are printing professionals. A print shop may have
printers (machines) for digital printing but they also usually have
web or sheet presses for offset lithography and other commercial
printing processes.

A commercial printer is a printing company that prints a file using

one of a variety of methods, often involving a printing press. The
printing method to be used affects how the digital file must be
prepared. Commercial printers usually require very specific file
preparation or prepress tasks.

Knowing which is which by context

When you encounter instructions in desktop publishing articles

and tutorials to "talk to your printer" we're not telling you to whisper
to your inkjet or engage your laser printer in meaningful
conversation - although a few sharp words might make you feel
better when the printer jams or you

run out of ink in the middle of a print job. You can safely assume that
"talk to your printer" means consulting with your commercial print
service about your print job.

Instructions to "send your document to your printer" could refer

to the man (or woman) or the machine. It should be evident from the
context of the page whether it means hitting the print button in your
software or taking a digital file to your print shop for commercial
printing. Other terms used for a commercial printer are print shop,
offset printer, quick printer (places such as Kinko's) or service
bureau -- technically different but a printer and a service bureau may
sometimes provide similar services. The term "service provider"
may be used to mean either your service bureau or print shop

The method of printing — whether offset or desktop printing —

dictates how the desktop publishing document must be prepared.
That's why answers to questions about what kind of software to
use or how to set up a document begin with "how will it be printed?"

The three primary differences in offset printing and

desktop printing (such as inkjet and laser) are the colors of ink
and the way the ink is placed on the paper as well as the type of
machinery used to accomplish the task.

Ink Colors
Both commercial offset printing (also known as offset lithography)
and inkjet desktop printing utilize four basic ink colors: CMYK. Dots
of cyan (blue), magenta (red), yellow, and black (the K) are placed
next to each other in specific patterns that trick the eye into seeing
millions of colors. Additionally, offset printing can use premixed inks
in a variety of specific colors as well as metallic and florescent inks.
These are called spot colors. However, printing white ink is not
usually a viable option for offset or desktop printing.

Printing Process
Inkjet printing puts all the different ink colors on the paper in one
pass through the printer. In commercial offset printing each color of
ink is applied separately. Because the paper must pass through
the printing press multiple times, there are special requirements for
preparing digital files for color printing.

Printer vs. Press

Desktop printing usually uses some type of inkjet or laser printer.
The inkjet printer has ink cartridges that places the ink directly on
the paper.

These are self-contained units connected to a computer through
cables. Offset lithography uses a web or sheet press that may consist
of multiple units. Photographic printing plates are made of the file to
be printed. The plates accept the ink which is then transferred to the
paper.

File Preparation for Offset Printing

In choosing desktop publishing software one of the key
considerations is determining how you will print your material.
Some lower end or consumer desktop publishing applications
cannot produce the type of files needed for commercial offset
printing. Even when using software capable of creating the
required files, non-designers may not understand how to properly
create files for commercial offset

Learning Objectives:
After reading this information sheet, you must be able

Printing
Although there are many specific considerations for preparing files
for offset printing, in terms of ink colors and the printing process two
of the main software and file preparation considerations are the use
of CMYK graphics and separations.

CMYK vs. RGB

Graphics generally use RGB (Red, Green, Blue) or CMYK colors.
Graphics on the Web or designed for on-screen display are RGB
images. Because offset printing utilitizes CMYK inks, all full-color
graphics need to be saved with CMYK colors. This simple
conversion is done in your graphics software program.

Separations
Whether printing in CMYK inks or spot colors, for offset printing you
must supply a file that can be separated into different files for each
ink color. These separations contain only the elements of the
document that will print in one color of ink. The printing plates for
offset printing are made from these separations.
Color separation - refers to color
printing, is the reproduction of an
image or text in color (as opposed
to simpler black and white

Spot color – In offset printing, a spot

a single run. The widely-spread offset
printing process is composed of
four spot colors: Cyan, Magenta,
Yellow and Key (black) commonly
