CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 INTRODUCTION

The discussion in this section is based on the justification for the research choice and the

methodologies used in the study. The research design, instrumentation, data collecting, sample

methodologies, the study population, and data analysis tools and methods will all be evaluated.

3.2 RESEARCH DESIGN

The descriptive survey technique was used to gather data for this study, and questionnaires

were used as instruments. A survey method is an instrument or approach for gathering data in

research by asking a predetermined set of individuals questions. The design is chosen because

it allows the researcher to gather data in a uniform manner using a highly organized research

instrument. It offers a framework for the researcher to work within in order to solve the

research topic, and it might vary depending on the nature of the problem being investigated. It

may be applied to both quantitative and qualitative research.

3.3 SETTINGS

The research was carried out in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State. The rationale

was that Akinyele Local Government Area comprises of both informed and uninformed

citizens. As a result of this, the study’s subjects who were picked from this location would

have to be both informed and uninformed citizens.

3.4 PARTICIPANTS

The participants in this study were 100 people from various tribes, backgrounds, orientations

and areas in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State who are Nigerian citizens both

informed and uninformed. The participants are between the ages of 18 and 60 seeing as the

target for democracy and political participation in Nigeria.

3.5 INCLUSION CRITERIA

Those who had resided in Akinyele Local Government, who are Nigerian citizen and are

informed citizen of democracy and political participation in Nigeria were included in the

qualitative research. This research includes men and women between the ages of 18 and 60.

This study's data will come from both primary and secondary sources. This would allow the

researchers to get first-hand knowledge on democracy and political participation in Nigeria.

Questionnaires, and active materials are examples of these sources. Books, articles in journals,

newspapers, government publications, unpublished research works, and other secondary

sources was used in this study.

3.6 SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

In statistical analysis, sampling is the act of selecting a predefined number of observations

from a larger population. The name or other identification of the exact procedure by which the

entities of the sample were picked is known as a sampling technique. The type of study being

conducted determines the mechanism utilized to sample from a wider population, which in this

case will be the simple random sampling technique. A simple random technique involves

random selection of a subset of a particular population. In this sampling method, each member
of the population has an exactly equal chance of being selected. This method is the simplest of

all probability-sampling methods because it only involves a single random selection and

requires little prior knowledge about the population. This method was chosen for this research

work because it will enable efficient and effective gathering of data and will provide accurate

responses which will aid the data analysis.

3.7 RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

In this study, questionnaires was utilized as data gathering tool. A questionnaire is a research

tool that contains a list of questions requiring responses from a predefined group of people. It

is used to collect relevant information that can help you arrive at definite results during

research. Questionnaires are used to collect quantitative data from respondents. It combines

different question types like close-ended and open-ended questions that allow you to extract

large volumes of data from respondents. Close Ended Style; Dichotomous Questions

questionnaire format was used as a research instrument or technique for gathering data for this

research. This will aid in the generation of acceptable and necessary responses to the reliability

and validity tests, allowing for easy analysis and interpretation.

3.8 DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURE

The study collects data on democracy and political participation from 100 respondents in

Akinyele Local Government, Oyo State using questionnaires, with an emphasis democracy and

political participation in Nigeria: the role of informed citizenship. Data collection, like all other

components of a qualitative study, should be carefully managed and limited. Questionnaires

are primary method of data collection in this project (Patton, 2002; Stakes, 1995).
