Preface
This standard is based on Template LV 312-1, which was drawn up by representatives of
automobile manufacturers Audi AG, BMW AG, Daimler AG, Porsche AG, and Volkswagen AG.
Deviations from Supply Specification LV 312-1 are shown in italics in this standard. If modifications
to individual test sections become necessary in individual cases, these must be agreed upon
separately between the responsible department and the relevant manufacturer.
Test reports are accepted as long as the tests were performed by an independent testing institute
that is accredited according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025. Acceptance of the test reports does not
automatically result in a release.

1 Scope
This standard describes requirements and tests for adhesive tapes used on vehicle wiring
harnesses. VW 60360-1 only applies to new designs and is only used for the initial release by
Volkswagen AG. In the case of releases for further applications (PPAP, first-sample test report
[EMPB], etc.), reference to the data yielded is possible. Adhesive tapes already used in series
production will not be modified unless modifications or subsequent tests are required by
Volkswagen AG.
The tapes are used primarily to bundle and wrap cables and wiring harnesses. Adhesive tapes
tested according to this standard may be used for both full wrapping and partial wrapping.
In particular cases, additional requirements may be placed on adhesive tapes, such as insulation or
fastening of cables and wiring harnesses, protection against mechanical damage and against
chemical substances, or sound-absorbing effect. The scope of the application-relevant tests for
initial releases is based on the installation location, the resulting requirements, and, if applicable,
further special requirements.

2 General information
The adhesive tapes must be applied at room temperature. In order to ensure proper adhesion, the
wiring harnesses to be wrapped must be free from oil, grease, silicone, talcum, or other substances
that may impair the adhesive effect. Since the applied adhesives are pressure-sensitive, short and
forceful pressing, in particular at the ends of the tape, is absolutely necessary. The instructions of
the adhesive tape manufacturers concerning storage and processing must be followed.

The following temperature classes are defined (see Tabelle 1):

─ Tu minimum service temperature
─ To maximum long-term service temperature
─ Tk maximum short-term temperature
─ Tü overload temperature
Tabelle 1 Temperature classes
Temperature Long-term service Short-term Overload temperature
class * temperature (240 h) Tk (6 h) Tü = To + 50 (°C)

To (°C) = T o + 25 (°C)

A -40 to 85 110 135

B -40 to 100 125 150
B (105) -40 to 105 130 155
C -40 to 125 150 175
D -40 to 150 175 200
E -40 to 175 200 225
* For PVC adhesive tapes, a Tu of -40 °C generally cannot be reached. For these t apes, Tu is determined according to
Section 5.5.1.4 and noted separately in the test report. A value of Tu ≤ -25 °C must be reached.

The test scope is agreed upon between the suppliers of the adhesive tapes and the engineering
departments of the automobile manufacturers. Generally, the test matrix applies (see Tabelle A.2).
The test results also apply bindingly to adhesive tapes of identical structure having deviating
geometric dimensions (lengths, widths, prefabricated variants).
The supplier of the adhesive tapes is obliged to deliver series-production material that meets the
tested and released product quality. If there are application-relevant product changes, the
engineering department of the automobile manufacturer must be informed in advance; approval
must be obtained before delivery (after testing, if required).

3 Marking
The packaging of the adhesive tapes must bear the following information:
─ Description
─ Manufacturer's name or company logo
─ Date of manufacture
─ Part number of supplier

The core of the adhesive tape roll bears the company logo of the respective manufacturer.
Page 5
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

4 Structure and materials

Generally, adhesive tapes consist of a substrate and an adhesive coating applied to one or both
sides. The adhesive tapes may be covered with films or paper siliconized on one or both sides.
Adhesive tapes can be provided as adhesive tape rolls or as punched parts in prefabricated form.
The manufacturer must indicate the adhesive tape structure with regard to substance classes and
materials for the individual components in the test report:
─ Substrate: e.g., woven fabric, nonwoven, film
─ Adhesive
─ Cover
─ Weight of the individual components in (g/m²)

e.g., PET fabric with acrylate adhesive. For identity testing, see Section 5.2.

5 Test methods and test requirements

5.1 General

5.1.1 Test atmosphere

Unless a different test atmosphere has been specified, tests and conditioning are performed in an
atmosphere according to ISO 554-23/50 Ordinary. Deviating conditions must be noted in the test
report.

5.1.2 Sampling
Sampling is performed according to DIN EN 1939. The specimen roll is conditioned under test
atmosphere conditions for at least 24 h. The outermost three turns of the adhesive tape roll are
discarded. Then the specimen strip is cut. The date of manufacture of the adhesive tape must be
indicated.
All tests specified in Section 5 are performed on tapes with a width of 19 mm. Additional tests for
smaller tapes are performed only upon special request.
For each test, only specimens that are no older than 6 months at start of the test and that have not
been used in previous tests must be used.

5.1.3 Number of tests

3 specimens each must be tested, unless other specifications are given with regard to the number
of specimens. If at most 1 of the 3 specimens fails, the test is repeated with 10 specimens. In this
case, all 10 specimens must pass the test, i.e., the test is not passed if one more specimen fails. A
repetition is not allowed if one of these 10 specimens fails (see VW 60306). This applies to all limits
listed in the following tables.

5.1.4 Drying ovens

For long-term tests under increased temperature load, drying ovens with natural ventilation
according to ISO 6722 (Section "Ovens") must be used.
Page 6
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

5.1.5 Units
Unless otherwise required, the following applies:
─ Temperatures must be specified in °C
─ All dimensions must be specified in mm

5.2 Identity
The adhesive tape can be clearly identified by means of identity tests. The requirements result from
drawings and supply specifications. The identity characteristics must be stored at first sampling.

5.2.1 Color
Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Procedure
Perform a visual comparison with the reference sample or in compliance with the respective RAL or
Pantone colors. Store the reference sample which stems from initial testing in a careful manner
(dark, in test atmosphere).
Requirement
See drawing and/or supply specification.
The color for adhesive tapes used on cables with a nominal voltage range > 60 V and
≤ 600 V is orange (see DIN 72551-7).
Result
Color of the reference sample based on RAL or Pantone colors.
For subsequent tests: comparison with reference sample or specified RAL or Pantone colors.

5.2.2 Adhesive
Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Procedure
Perform the IR-spectroscopic characterization of the adhesive side of the tape with commercially
available IR spectrometers in an IR absorption range of (600 - 4 000) cm-1 as a surface
measurement (ATR = attenuated total reflection).
Requirement
At initial testing, attach the recorded spectrum to the test report as a reference spectrum.
Result
Absorption spectrum as a reference spectrum.
Page 7
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

5.2.3 Substrate
Test scope
The test is performed on all adhesive tapes.
Procedure
Characterize the adhesive tape substrate by means of DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) of
the entire adhesive tape in a temperature range of (+25 to +400) °C in an inert gas atmosphere
(nitrogen 5.0). Determine the curve contour of the enthalpy at a heating rate of 10 K/min. The
specimen amount is determined by the volume of the test pan and must be between 5 mg and
20 mg.
Requirement
At initial testing, the recorded calorimetric curve is attached to the test report as a reference.
Result
Enthalpy temperature curve as a reference curve.

5.2.4 Weight of tape

Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Procedure
The test is performed based on DIN EN ISO 2286-2 as the overall weight of adhesive and
substrate (method A). Deviating from DIN EN ISO 2286-2, a length of 2,0 m is tested.
Requirement
See drawing and/or supply specification.
Result
The tape weight is indicated in (g/m²) in the test report.

5.2.5 Thickness of tape

Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Procedure
The test is performed according to DIN EN 1942 and DIN 2286-3 (contact pressure 1,8 kPa -
2,2 kPa).
Note: The comparison of the two measured values is used to estimate the compressibility.
Requirement
See drawing and/or supply specification.
Result
The two tape thicknesses must be indicated in (mm) in the test report, including indication of the
test specification and the contact pressure.
Page 8
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

5.3 Delivery, storage, and processability

The particular requirements for delivery, storage, and processing are product-specific and will be
agreed upon between the supplier and the processor on an individual basis.
Generally, at least the following criteria are defined:

5.3.1 Storage

The supplier must specify the storage period and other storage conditions to be adhered to by the
processor.
Storage and transportation must be based on the conditions of the standard atmosphere acc. to
ISO 554-23/50 Ordinary.
Standard storage conditions are, for example:
─ Maximum 1 year at -5 °C to +25 °C
─ Maximum 3 months at -25 °C to +45 °C

5.3.2 Appearance
Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Procedure
Visual inspection with the naked eye.
Requirement
Upon delivery, the adhesive tape rolls must meet the following criteria:
─ uniform, flawless appearance
─ no faulty coatings
─ no transfer of adhesive when unwound
─ no sliding out of roll (like a telescope)
─ no adhesive bleeding or adhesiveness of lateral edge
─ no adhesive penetration through the substrate
Note: For special products, deviations from these criteria may be made after approval by the
automobile manufacturer's engineering department.
Result
Imperfections or deviations must be noted in the test report.

5.3.3 Length of tape

If the length of tape must be checked regardless of the manufacturer's specifications, this must be
performed as follows.
Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Procedure
The test is performed according to DIN EN 60454-2 by unwinding the tape and measuring the
length by means of a calibrated running length measuring device.
Page 9
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

Requirement
See drawing and supply specification.
The tape length must be adhered to with a tolerance of ± 2%.
Result
In the test report, the length of the adhesive tape roll is given in (m), including indication of the
relevant test specification.

5.3.4 Width of tape

Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.

Procedure
The test is performed according to DIN EN 60454-2 (method A) on a sample strip using a
measuring device with suitable accuracy.
Requirement
See drawing and supply specification.
Concerning the width of tape, the following tolerances must be adhered to according to
DIN EN 60454-2, irrespective of the nominal dimension:
for film tapes ± 0,5 mm
for other tapes ± 1 mm
Result
The tape width is indicated in (mm) in the test report.

5.3.5 Unwind force

The force required to unwind an adhesive tape roll under standardized conditions is determined.
The unwind force has an impact on the wrapping force when wiring harnesses are wrapped and
hence, among other factors, on the wrapped strength of the wiring harness. Excessive unwind
forces may cause twisting and hence shortening of thin wiring harnesses in particular; unwind
forces that are too low may cause processing problems and, furthermore, soft wiring harnesses
with undefined, loose windings.
Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Procedure
The test is performed according to DIN EN 1944.
Requirements
To be coordinated with the user.
Result
The unwind force is given in (N) in the test report (corresponds to (N/roll width) or (N/cm)).
Page 10
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

5.3.6 Manual tear-off

Many processors prohibit the use of cutting tools due to risk of injury or because of time
considerations, which means that adhesive tapes are preferably torn off by hand. In this case,
adhesive tapes must not be overstrained or deformed to ensure proper processing and permanent
functional performance. Hence, in addition to the tear-off force, particular requirements are placed
on the strain behavior.
Note: The method will be revised as soon as a more suitable physical method for measuring the
"manual tear-off" property has been established.

Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Procedure
In order to characterize the "manual tear-off" property, the following requirements are established:
─ Breaking force acc. to DIN EN 14410 (see 5.4.1).
─ Manual tear-off of the tape perpendicular to the unwind direction and subjective evaluation of the
tear-off edge and of the required tear-off force (at least 3 trained persons are required for the
evaluation of force).

Requirements
Adhesive tapes are classified according to the following criteria:
─ Breaking force < 90 N/cm
─ Subjective evaluation of tear behavior – evaluation result (by at least half the number of test
persons) with:
• Good manual tear-off property: low force exertion and tear-off edge smooth and
perpendicular to the unwind direction (low overstrain on tape) and "flagging" test passed
(5.4.3) with manually torn tape end
• Limited manual tear-off property: high force exertion and tear-off edge frayed or oblique
with respect to unwind direction and "flagging" test passed (5.4.3) with manually torn tape
end
Result
Classification in the test report as "good manual tear-off property", "limited manual tear-off
property", or "no manual tear-off property".

5.4 Technical properties

These tests comprise the basic properties of an adhesive tape that are important for the application
as wiring harness wrapping tape.

5.4.1 Breaking force and elongation at tear

The breaking force is a measure of the load capacity of the adhesive tape during its application and
use. The elongation at tear is a measure of the ductility of an adhesive tape. However, the decisive
factor for processing adhesive tapes is the tension-strain behavior.
Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Page 11
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

Procedure
The breaking force is the maximum force before fracture (tear) occurs or at the moment fracture
occurs.
The elongation at tear is determined by the ratio between the original specimen length and the
length at the moment fracture occurs.
Conduct both tests according to DIN EN 14410 at a test rate of 300 mm/min.
Requirement
The empirical values of application-suitable adhesive tapes as listed in A.1 apply to the different
categories of adhesive tapes. In particular individual cases such as product innovations, special
agreements can be made with the affected engineering departments or release departments.
Result
The breaking force is given in (N/cm) in the test report; the elongation at tear is given in (%). The
complete tension-strain curve must be attached to the test report.

5.4.2 Adhesive strength

Adhesive strength is the essential characteristic of an adhesive tape and a measure of the strength
of the adhesive bond.
Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Procedure
The test is performed based on DIN EN 1939 on steel (method 1, 180° test), and on the back of
tape (method 2, 180° test). For tape widths ≥ 9 mm, the measurement is representatively
performed on tapes with a width of 19 mm (smaller widths after consultation).
When testing the adhesive strength on the back of the tape, the adhesive tape is to be applied and
torn off as follows:

B A

Applying the lower layer to the steel plate

D C

B A

Applying the upper layer

D C

B A
Measuring the adhesive strength on the back of
the tape
Page 12
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

Note: Due to the changed test conditions (roughness of test panels, contact pressure, and waiting
time until removal), values are obtained that are approximately (20 to 30)% lower when measured
according to DIN EN 1939:2003-12 as compared to the previous method according to
DIN EN 1939:1996-11.

Requirements
The empirical values of application-suitable adhesive tapes as listed in A.1 apply to the different
categories of adhesive tapes. In particular individual cases such as product innovations, special
agreements can be made with the affected engineering departments or release departments.
Result
The adhesive strength is indicated in (N/cm) in the test report.

5.4.3 Flagging
By testing the flagging behavior, the risk of self-induced detachment of the adhesive tape ends,
under the influence of the reset force caused by the flexural strength of the tape, is determined.

5.4.3.1 Flagging in as-received condition

Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
For tapes classified as having a "good manual tear-off property", this test must involve specimens
with torn adhesive tape ends and specimens with cut adhesive tape ends.
Procedure
The test is performed according to DIN EN 12035 with a steel bar (diameter: 10 mm, length:
approx. 40 cm, weight: 250 g) with sample strips of 100 mm length each and a preferred tape width
of 19 mm (6 strips; for other widths, a quantity changed such that a total width of at least 114 mm is
achieved – see Tabelle 2). The support for rolling the tape must be even and smooth (e.g., (25 x
35) cm glass plate); weights of 1 kg each are suspended on both ends of the steel bar (see Figure
1 and Figure 2).
Tabelle 2 Test parameters

Width of Number of strips per bar Total width in mm

tape
9 mm 13 117
12 mm 10 120
15 mm 8 120
19 mm 6 114
25 mm 5 125
38 mm 3 114

From each sample, at least 3 specimens of 100 mm length are cut with scissors or manually torn
and evenly distributed across the width of the glass plate with the adhesive side facing up and
aligned parallel to the edge. The metal bar is positioned above them in such a way that all strips
adhere with their start. The steel bar with the two freely suspended 1 kg weights is rolled over the
strips without exerting additional pressure in such a way that the strips wind around the bar without
Page 13
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

edge offset to the extent possible. After the entire adhesive tape length has been wound onto the
bar, the bar is rolled 20 cm further (marking on the glass plate) in order to ensure that the tape
ends are pressed on reliably.
A deviating sample preparation is permitted, provided identical pressure forces are achieved.

Figure 1 Test setup

Figure 2 Test sequence

The wrapped bar is stored horizontally in the test atmosphere. After 20-24 h, the length of the
protruding ends is measured. The mean value of all individual values is calculated.
Requirements
The tape ends must not protrude more than 2 mm.
If the test is not passed, it is repeated using new specimens. In this case, the tape ends are
strongly pressed on by hand.
The tape ends must not protrude after this test.
Result
Protrusion of the tape ends after the tests in (mm)
Page 14

5.4.3.2 Flagging with thermal aging

Test scope
This test is mandatory for all adhesive tapes and is used to collect data. If this test is not passed, a
release is not generally ruled out. The results are evaluated by the responsible engineering
departments of the automobile manufacturers.
For tapes classified as having a "good manual tear-off property", this test must involve specimens
with torn adhesive tape ends and specimens with cut adhesive tape ends.
Procedure
Testing according to Section 5.4.3.1, but with wrapped bars that have been subjected to aging
according to Section 5.5.1.1.
Requirements
See Section 5.4.3.1.
Result
Protrusion of the tape ends after the tests in (mm)

5.4.3.3 Flagging with thermal short-term aging

Test scope
This test is mandatory for all adhesive tapes and is used to collect data. If this test is not passed, a
release is not generally ruled out. The results are evaluated by the responsible engineering
departments of the automobile manufacturers.
For tapes classified as having a "good manual tear-off property", this test must involve DUTs with
torn adhesive tape ends and DUTs with cut adhesive tape ends.
Procedure
Testing according to Section 5.4.3.1, but with wrapped bars that have been subjected to aging
according to Section 5.5.1.2.
Requirements
See Section 5.4.3.1.
Result
Protrusion of the tape ends after the tests in (mm)

5.4.4 Absorbency
Adhesive tapes with textile substrates may absorb and transfer small amounts of liquids. This is an
undesired effect that can be quantified using the following method.
Test scope
This test is performed on all adhesive tapes.
Procedure
Testing of the capillary action is performed according to DIN EN ISO 9073-6 with sample strips of
19 mm width. For testing, the adhesive tape is wrapped spirally around a metal mandrel (20 mm
diameter) with 50% overlap. Distilled water and engine oil (see VW 60306-1) are used as the test
fluids. For better detection of the capillary elevation on black textiles, a small amount of dye or
fluorescent substance may be added. The immersion depth must be at least 30 mm; recording
takes place after 15 minutes.
Page 15
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

Requirements
Capillary elevation for water and engine oil < 100 mm
Result
Capillary elevation of water and engine oil in mm.

5.5 Application properties

5.5.1 Aging properties

Testing of the aging properties is intended to reflect the behavior of the tape under conditions the
most identical to practical applications, i.e., as wrapping tape for electrical cables in vehicles
(analogous to VW 60306). Therefore, the tests according to 5.5.1.1 to 5.5.1.6 are preferably
conducted on machine-wrapped sample wiring harnesses with the following structure (machine
with automatic feed, e.g., Ondal Liner; wrapping parameter: loose brake, wrapping speed:
500 rpm): two identical wires with a 0,35 mm² line cross-section are twisted with a twist length of
approx. 2 cm. The cable bundles are spirally wrapped with the adhesive tape to be tested (width:
19 mm) with approx. 50% overlap. The wrapping length is according to the test description.
Secure the ends of the adhesive tape against loosening. Do not evaluate the secured areas.
In order to represent the variety of cables used in everyday applications, reference cables are used
for the respective temperature classes for tests according to 5.5.1.1 and 5.5.1.6. To be able to
evaluate possible discolorations, bright cable colors (not black or brown) are used for the tests.
From Tabelle 3, the following must be tested:
1 For all tests in this Section, one type "a" cable
2 For the test according to 5.5.1.1, additionally one cable each of types "b" to "e", insofar as the
cable material is assigned to a temperature class lower than or equal to the temperature class of
the adhesive tape
3 For the test according to 5.5.1.6, additionally one reference cable each of types "b" to "e",
insofar as the cable material is assigned to a temperature class equal to the temperature class
of the adhesive tape
The test temperature corresponds to To of the weakest component. The special type "f" cables are
only tested after a separate agreement with the engineering departments or the release

manufacture of the cable.

5.5.1.1 Thermal aging

The functional performance of wiring harnesses made of adhesive tape and cables must be
ensured over the entire service life of the vehicle. This test simulates an application period of at
least 10 years under aggravated temperature conditions and evaluation criteria.
Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Procedure
The wrapped wiring harnesses with the reference cables listed in 5.5.1 and also one unwrapped
reference sample are aged freely suspended in a natural convection oven according to 5.1.4, for a
period of 3 000 h, at the maximum long-term temperature (To). One specimen is removed every
500 h. The wiring harness is conditioned for at least 3 h (but no more than 48 h) in the test
atmosphere and then tested as follows:
To test the flexural strength (see Figure 3), a bending test is performed on a separate wiring
harness section (or on a separate specimen) based on VW 60306. The jaw distance (lv) is 30 mm.
The test rate is 100 mm/min. The maximum force required to bend the wrapped specimen is
measured. The mean value from at least 3 measurements is determined.
Page 17
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

Figure 3 Test setup

On a different section of the wiring harness, outside stickiness is tested manually. Next, this wiring
harness section is wrapped around a mandrel with a diameter of 20 mm and visually inspected.
This is followed by a voltage test according to VW 60306, Section "Measurement of 1-minute
voltage protection".
The adhesive tape is then removed from the specimen, the strands are separated, and a visual
inspection is performed. The adhesive tape is tested for stickiness by exerting pressure with one's
thumb. Any visual changes to the cable or wrapping tape must be noted in the test report. If the
wrapping tape cannot be removed without apparent damage to the cable, this must be
documented.
One strand is wrapped tightly around a mandrel with a diameter of 2 mm at least twice, the other
one around a mandrel with a diameter of 10 mm, and then both are visually evaluated. Afterwards,
a voltage test according to VW 60306, Section "Measurement of 1-minute voltage protection", is
performed on each strand.
Requirements
After testing, the adhesive tape must still ensure reliable bundling of the wiring harness. Therefore,
requirements a) and b) must be met. Requirements c) and d) represent additional quality criteria;
they must be noted in the test report.
a) Wiring harness: During the wrapping test around a 20 mm mandrel, the wrapping of the wiring
harness must not rupture or exhibit cracks or visible damage. Opening of the tape layers is not
permissible. Noticeable discoloration of the adhesive tape must not occur. There must be no
dielectric breakdown during the voltage test.
Page 18
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

b) Strand: During the wrapping test of the strands around a 2 mm mandrel, they must not exhibit
any cracks, fractures, or embrittlement and must not be swollen or shrunken. Discoloration of
the line is permissible. The original color must still be recognizable. The result of the wrapping
test around the 10 mm mandrel (if not passed with the 2 mm mandrel) is submitted and used
for data collection. Since the strand insulation may melt together at temperatures above 125 °C
under certain conditions depending on the type of cable, it may only be possible to perform the
strand bending test to a limited extent. If this is the case, it must be noted separately in the test
report. There must be no dielectric breakdown during the voltage test.
c) Adhesive tape: After the test, the adhesive tape must still exhibit self-adhesive properties.
Reduced stickiness as compared to the unaged sample is permissible; however, full hardening
or adoption of a paint-like condition by the adhesive are not. The aged sample wiring harness
may be sticky; however, the adhesive must not be transferred to clean fingers.
d) Flexural strength: The flexural strength values of the aged and non-aged sample wiring
harness must be noted in the test report; they are used for data collection.
Result
Specification of the maximum long-term service temperature (To) at which requirements a) and b)
are fulfilled. Note any non-fulfillment of further requirements separately in the test report. Document
the colors of the aged and the unaged tape and of the aged and unaged cable with a photograph.

5.5.1.2 Thermal short-term aging

In addition to accelerated testing of the aging behavior of wiring harnesses as compared to the 3
000 h test according to 5.5.1.1, this test is intended to evaluate the behavior of wiring harnesses,
consisting of cables and adhesive tape, if loads above the long-term service temperature To occur.
Test scope
The test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Procedure
Age the wrapped wiring harnesses with type "a" cables as specified in 5.5.1 in a freely suspended
manner in a natural convection oven according to 5.1.4, for a period of 240 h, at Tk (To + 25 °C).
Subsequently, condition the wiring harness for at least 3 h (but no more than 48 h) in the test
atmosphere and then test as follows:
Manually test the wiring harness for outside stickiness and wrap it, at least twice, tightly around a
mandrel with a diameter of 20 mm and inspect it visually. Then, remove the adhesive tape and test
it for stickiness by exerting pressure with your thumb.
Requirements
After testing, the adhesive tape must still ensure reliable bundling of the wiring harness. Therefore,
requirement a) must be met. Requirement c) represents additional quality criteria and must be
noted in the test report.
a) During the wrapping test around a 20 mm mandrel, the wrapping of the wiring harness must not
rupture or exhibit cracks or visible damage. Opening of the tape layers is not permissible.
Noticeable discoloration of the adhesive tape must not occur.
b) NA
c) After the test, the adhesive tape must still exhibit self-adhesive properties. Reduced stickiness
as compared to the unaged sample is permissible; however, full hardening or adoption of a
paint-like condition by the adhesive are not. The aged sample wiring harness may be sticky;
however, the adhesive must not be transferred to clean fingers.
d) NA

Result

Specification of the short-term temperature (Tk) at which requirement a) is fulfilled. Note any non-
fulfillment of further requirements separately in the test report. Document the colors of the aged
and the unaged tape and of the aged and unaged cable with a photograph.

5.5.1.3 Testing at overload temperature

Additional testing at overload temperature is required for very rare cases in which short-term
temperature peaks occur. If this test is not passed, a release is not generally ruled out. The results
are evaluated in coordination with the responsible engineering departments of the automobile
manufacturers.
Test scope
The test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Procedure

Age the wrapped wiring harnesses with type "a" cables as specified in 5.5.1in a freely suspended
manner in a natural convection oven according to 5.1.4, for a period of 6 h, at Tü (To + 50 °C).
Reduced stickiness
as compared to the unaged sample is permissible; however, full hardening or adoption of a
paint-like condition by the adhesive are not. The aged sample wiring harness may be sticky;
however, the adhesive must not be transferred to clean fingers.
d) NA
Result
Specification of the overload temperature (Tü) at which requirement a) is fulfilled. Note any non-
fulfillment of further requirements separately in the test report. Document the colors of the aged
and the unaged tape and of the aged and unaged cable with a photograph.

5.5.1.4 Low-temperature resistance

Testing of the low-temperature resistance defines the lowest temperature (Tu) at which an adhesive
tape keeps its function, even under short-term loads, with the wiring harness still exhibiting the
required flexibility.
Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Procedure
Test the low-temperature resistance for all types of adhesive tape at -40 °C based on ISO 6722 on
an inert "a" type cable from the reference cables listed in 5.5.1. Based on experience, PVC film
tapes cannot reach this value. For PVC, perform this test at -25 °C.
Fasten the wrapped wiring harnesses to a rotatable mandrel with a diameter of 20 mm. Load the
free end with a weight of 0,5 kg. Fasten the wiring harness to the mandrel and the weight to the
wiring harness using unwrapped, unstripped wires.
Age the specimens for 4 h at Tu in a cold chamber. Then, wrap the wiring harness around the
mandrel at least twice (in the cold chamber). Avoid heating of the specimen or the test device
under all circumstances.
Requirements
a) The adhesive tapes must not detach during the low-temperature aging.
b) During the bending test, the wiring harness must not burst or form cracks.
Result
Specification of the minimum long-term service temperature (Tu).

5.5.1.5 Hydrolysis resistance

The resistance of wiring harnesses to damp heat is an important criterion for long-term functional
performance.
Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Procedure
Testing of the adhesive tape is performed on an inert type "a" cable. Age the wrapped wiring
harness freely suspended in a climate chamber, for a period of 1 000 h, at (85 ± 2) °C and a
relative humidity of (85 ± 5)%. After the test time has elapsed, condition the wiring harness for at
least 3 h (but no more than 48 h) at 23 °C in the t est atmosphere and then wrap it around a
mandrel with a diameter of 20 mm and inspect it visually.
Requirements
a) The adhesive tapes must not detach during environmental aging.
b) During the wrapping test, the wiring harness must not rupture or exhibit cracks or displacement
of the adhesive tape layers against each other due to detachment of the adhesive tape from the
tape backside. Noticeable discoloration of the adhesive tape must not occur.
Page 21
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

c) After the test, the adhesive tape must still exhibit self-adhesive properties. Reduced stickiness
as compared to the unaged sample is permissible; however, full hardening or adoption of a
paint-like condition by the adhesive are not. The aged sample wiring harness may be sticky;
however, the adhesive must not be transferred to clean fingers.
Result
The result is "fulfilled" or "not fulfilled". Note any deviations in the test report.

5.5.1.6 Resistance to chemicals

Wiring harnesses that might come into contact with aggressive liquids (e.g., in the engine
compartment) must be resistant to them in order to ensure long-term functional performance.
Hence, in this test, not only is the influence of various operating fluids on the adhesive tape
evaluated but also the interaction between the adhesive tape, cable, and operating fluids.
Test scope
The test is mandatory for all adhesive tapes of temperature classes C, D, E, and higher and is used
for data collection. If individual requirements of these tests are not met, a release is not generally
ruled out. The results are evaluated by the responsible engineering departments of the automobile
manufacturers.
The test temperature depends on the temperature class of the tape. A cable of identical
temperature class must be selected.
Specimen preparation
Twist together two cables of the same material with a cross-section of 0,35 mm² each (twist length
approx. 2 cm) and wrap with 50% overlap with the adhesive tape to be tested (for test group 1);
then cut samples with a length of 40 cm.
Prepare the following test groups (analogous to VW 60306): test groups 1 and 3 with respect to
group 1 chemicals and group 2 chemicals.
Test group 1a:
Wrap the wrapping tape to be tested around a selected type "a" cable from Tabelle 3.
Test groups 1b to f:
Depending on the temperature class of the adhesive tape, select cables of identical temperature
classes from Tabelle 3. For temperature class 150 °C, test type "b"; for temperature class 125 °C,
test types "c" and "d". Test type "e" and type "f" only upon special request. Test only cables of the
same manufacturer within one test group.
Test group 1. must be named according to Tabelle 3 depending on the type of cable (e.g., test
group 1d means combination with X-PE 125 °C; see Ta belle 4).

Analogous to 1a to 1f, but only cable without wrapping tape
Note: Test groups 4 and 5 are not applicable since the thermal aging without the impact of
chemicals has already been tested in Section 5.5.1.1.
Procedure
Bend the wrapped specimens in the center to form a U so that the specimens fit in an open test
tube (approx. 25 mm in diameter) for aging in chemicals.
Submerse at least 4 DUTs each of test groups 1 and 3 (15 ± 2) cm into the respective chemical (or
moderately grease with lubricating grease) for 2 minutes in standard atmosphere. The cable ends
must not come into contact with chemicals. Then, let drip off for 2 minutes (10 minutes for fuels,
lubricating grease remains). For each type of chemical specified in VW 60306-1, use one of the
chemicals indicated in the selection.
Test each chemical separately (no combination of chemicals).
After completion, suspend 1 specimen each in a test tube with the cable ends upwards; age the
test tubes in an oven for 1 000 h at To. After 240 h, 480 h, 720 h, and 1 000 h, remove one
specimen is removed and immerse the remaining specimens in the respective chemical again.
Then let them drip off and age them again.
Age the specimens without direct contact with any potential chemical sump. This prevents the
undesired, permanent contact of the specimens with the respective chemical, since capillary
effects, which cause re-feed of the chemical to the specimen, are avoided. In this way, temporary
wetting of the wiring harness with the chemicals is simulated.
After the test time has elapsed, condition the wiring harness in standard atmosphere for at least
3 hours (but no more than 72 hours) and then immediately test as follows:
Evaluate the U-section (lower 30 mm of the specimen) and the straight leg section separately.
Wrap the wiring harness around a mandrel with a diameter of 20 mm and examine visually, then
perform the voltage test according to VW 60306, Section "Measurement of 1-minute voltage
protection".
Page 23
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

Remove the adhesive tape from the specimen, separate the strands, and perform a visual
inspection. Note any visual changes to the cable or wrapping tape in the test report. Document it if
the wrapping tape cannot be removed without apparent damage to the cable.
Wrap one strand tightly around a mandrel with a diameter of 2 mm at least twice, the other one
around a mandrel with a diameter of 10 mm, then visually evaluate both. Afterwards, perform a
voltage test according to VW 60306, Section "Measurement of 1-minute voltage protection", on
each strand. If the U-section exhibits damage, remove the damaged part and continue the test on
the remaining section.
Requirements
Testing the resistance to chemicals is done for orientation and data collection. The results do not
affect the release, but they are used to specify the location of application and to determine whether
additional protective measures are required. The resistance to group 1 chemicals must be at least
1 000 h and the resistance to group 2 chemicals at least 240 h. File the results in a performance
sheet and document by photographs.
Requirements for the wrapping tape
During the wrapping test around a 20 mm mandrel, the wrapping must not rupture or exhibit cracks
or visible damage. Opening of the tape layers is not permissible.
Requirements for the cable
The insulation must have no cracks, fractures, or other damage impairing function. There must be
no dielectric breakdown during the voltage tests.
Result
Note the results in the test report separately according to leg area and U-section.

5.5.2 Flame resistance

A minimum flame resistance of the wiring harness must ensure that spreading of a fire will not be
facilitated. Therefore, the adhesive tape is tested in combination with defined cables.
Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Procedure
The test is performed based on ISO 3795, FMVSS302, and SAE J2192 on wiring harnesses of
seven 1 mm² cables wrapped with 50% overlap. Test cable types "c", "d", and "e" (according to
Tabelle 3) are each tested.

Requirements
Fire classes A, B, and C are permissible (see Tabelle 5).
Tabelle 5 Flame resistance
Fire class Requirement
A (not flammable) The flame goes out as soon as the burner is removed.
B (self-extinguishing) The flame goes out before the first reference mark is reached.
C Burning rate ≤ 100 mm/min
D Burning rate > 100 mm/min
Page 24
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

Result
For all 3 cable types, the fire class and, in the case of fire classes C and D, the burning rate are
specified in the test report.

5.5.3 Resistance to abrasion

At certain locations such as cable lead-throughs or welds, the wiring harnesses must be protected
against wear and abrasion. For this purpose, abrasion-resistant adhesive tapes are increasingly
being used as a cost-effective alternative to corrugated pipes, braided sleevings, and the like. This
test is intended to classify the protective effectiveness of an adhesive tape.
Test scope
The test at room temperature is performed on all types of adhesive tape. The tests at increased
temperatures are only performed on tapes which achieve at least abrasion class D at room
temperature.
Procedure
The test is performed according to LV 112 based on ISO 6722. Apply a single layer of the adhesive
tape with a length of approx. 10 cm to a steel mandrel with a diameter of 5 mm in the longitudinal
direction; the weight load is 7 N. Use a steel wire of 0,45 mm diameter as the abrasion tool.
Replace this wire after each measurement. Perform the abrasion test on the center of the adhesive
tape. Calculate the mean value of 10 individual measurements. The tests must be conducted at
room temperature, 40 °C, and 90 °C.
Perform the measurements at increased temperatures with a heated steel mandrel. Measure the
temperature between mandrel and adhesive tape.
For some materials (e.g., nonwoven), lumps of removed material may form. Check this every
500 strokes, and remove any lumps without damaging the adhesive tape.
Requirements
The adhesive tape must be classified into abrasion classes according to Tabelle 6 depending on
the number of double strokes (specification of the ranges for averaged measuring results).
Tabelle 6 Resistance to abrasion
Abrasion class Requirement
A no abrasion protection < 100 strokes
B little abrasion protection 100 - 499 strokes
C medium abrasion protection 500 - 999 strokes
D high abrasion protection 1 000 - 4 999 strokes
E very high abrasion protection 5 000 -14 999 strokes
F extremely high abrasion protection 15 000 - 29 999 strokes
G abrasion protection for special ≥ 30 000 strokes
applications

Result
The abrasion class at the tested temperatures as well as the number of strokes (mean value,
minimum, and maximum) are specified in the test report.
Page 25
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

5.5.4 Dielectric strength

Sufficient dielectric strength is required if adhesive tapes are used for insulation, for example, of
splice joints.
Test scope
Only tapes with special electrical insulation requirements are tested, for example, splicing tapes.
Procedure
Use an approx. 50 cm long single-wire FLRY cable (unscreened low-voltage cables with thin-
walled PVC insulation, 0,5 mm²) is used. Remove a 20 mm long section of insulation from the
center. Insulate the exposed area with 3 layers of the tape to be tested (50 mm in width). Apply
aluminum foil over the adhesive tape. Contact the specimen , and apply a test voltage of 1 kV (50
to 60) Hz for a duration of 1 min. Then increase the voltage at a rate of 500 V/s until dielectric
breakdown.
Requirement
No dielectric breakdown up to a voltage of 3 kV.
Result
The result is documented as "fulfilled" in the test report, including the measured breakdown
voltage. Any deviations must be noted in the test report.

5.5.5 Acoustic insulation

Once they reach a certain thickness, textile adhesive tapes and foam adhesive tapes in particular
have a significant insulating effect against disturbing rattling noise and vibration noise. This test is
intended to obtain quantitative data for the sound-insulating effect.

Test scope
This test is performed on all adhesive tapes used in the vehicle interior.
Procedure

Drop a steel bar onto an aluminum plate (thickness 0,3 mm) from a height of 20 mm, exerting a
force of 0,16 N. The detailed test setup is documented in Figure 4 and Figure 5.

noise in the form of the sound pressure level (Lsp) with frequency evaluation A and time evaluation
S. Apply a single layer of the adhesive tape to the steel bar in the area of the impact location, over
a length of 5 cm, in the longitudinal direction. Measure the difference between the noise of the bar
wrapped with adhesive tape and the unwrapped bar in dB(A). Perform the measurement ten times
at the same location of the specimen. If a trend towards lower insulation values can be discerned,
for example, due to compression of the specimen, note this in the test report. Perform the test in a
low-noise environment. After each series of measurements, remove the impact plate and store it
unloaded.
Requirements
Tabelle 7 shows the requirements.

values.

5.5.6 Hot-water jet test

Adhesive tapes used in wet zones must withstand loads that may occur in cleaning operations with
hot-water devices.
Test scope
All adhesive tapes of temperature classes C, D, E, and higher are tested.
Procedure
Perform the test based on DIN 40050-9 with a commercially available hot-water jet device and a
vertically clamped sample wiring harness (diameter: (10 to 15) mm) made of PVC lines (line cross-
section: 1 mm²). Fix the tape ends in position.
The following parameters must be met:
─ Overlap of wrapping 50%
─ Length of specimen (50 - 60) cm
─ Fan nozzle: Included angle (30 - 35)°
─ Distance between nozzle and wiring harness (100 - 150) mm
─ Spraying of the wiring harness at center (distance (40 to 50) cm; do not apply
jet to edge) from both sides at a traverse speed
of (2 - 4) cm/s
─ Exposure time 2 min
─ Water temperature (80 ± 5) °C
─ Operating pressure (80 - 100) bar
─ Application: angle to the specimen (90 ± 10)°

Requirements
After the hot-water jet treatment, the adhesive tape must not exhibit cracks or visible damage.
Dislocation or opening of the wrapping to such an extent that cables lie bare is not allowed.
Result
The result "fulfilled" or "not fulfilled" is entered in the test report. Note special observations in the
test report.

5.5.7 Mycological test

In rare cases, unfavorable ambient conditions may cause a fungus attack on the wiring harness,
which could damage the affected materials. The use of fungicides without consultation with the
responsible engineering departments is prohibited.
Test scope
Test substrates and adhesives separately (modular principle).
Materials that have already passed this test need not be tested again. Add the note "material
components already tested", and attach a copy of the test certificate.
Page 29
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

Tests can be combined:

─ In the case of film substrates: if the basic composition is identical. The dyeing may deviate.
─ In the case of nonwoven substrates: if the composition of the basic fiber is identical. Dyeing,
thickness, and mechanical design may deviate.
─ In the case of fabric substrates: if the composition of the basic fiber is identical. Dyeing,
thickness, and mechanical design may deviate.
─ In the case of adhesives: if the basic composition is identical.
Procedure
Test uncleaned specimens. Perform testing according to DIN EN ISO 846, method A. If a separate
specification stipulates testing for fungistatic efficiency, testing according to DIN EN ISO 846,
method B "Fungistatic efficiency", is applicable.
Testing of the substrate

Place strips of 19 mm width and (150 ± 10) mm length on mineral salt agar in a Petri dish (diameter
at least 130 mm; the ends may have to be rolled in slightly) and inoculate with the test fungus
spores. An intermediate check for fungus growth is permissible after 14 days. After 28 days of
breeding at (29 ± 1) °C, check the specimens for fungus growth accor ding to DIN EN ISO 846,
Section 9. Evaluate fungus growth by the grade given in DIN EN ISO 846, Table 4. Subsequently,
sterilize the specimens with ethanol (70%) in the ultrasonic bath. Then dry the specimens for
4 hours at 50 °C. Subsequently, conduct a strength test according to Section 5.4.1.
Testing of the adhesive
Use specimens of appropriate size. The adhesive must be applied to a polyester film with a coating
thickness of at least 20 g/m². Place the specimens on mineral salt agar in a Petri dish and inoculate
with the test fungus spores. An intermediate check for fungus growth is permissible after 14 days.
After 28 days of breeding at (29 ± 1) °C, check the specimens for fungus growth accor ding to
DIN EN ISO 846, Section 9. Evaluate fungus growth by the grade given in DIN EN ISO 846,
Table 4.
Requirements

Substrate

Growth according to DIN EN ISO 846, method A "Fungus growth test", maximum grade 3. At
growth level > 0, the mean values of breaking force and elongation at tear must not change by
more than 30%.
Adhesive
Growth according to DIN EN ISO 846, method A "Fungus growth test", maximum grade 3.

5.5.8 Ozone resistance

Adhesive tapes used in the engine compartment may be exposed to the oxidizing effect of ozone.
They must therefore exhibit sufficient ozone resistance to ensure long-term functional performance.
Test scope
All adhesive tapes of temperature classes C, D, E, and higher are tested.
Prior to testing, an agreement must be made with the responsible engineering department on a
case-to-case basis as to whether this test is required.
Page 30
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

Procedure
The test is performed based on DIN 53509-1 on a wiring harness wrapped with 50% overlap and
consisting of 7 cables with a cross-section of 1,0 mm² (type "e" according to Tabelle 3).
The test is performed according to DIN 53509-1, method A.
─ Duration 48 h
─ Temperature 40 °C
─ Relative humidity (55 ± 10)%
─ Ozone concentration (50 ± 5) pphm
After the test time has elapsed, condition the wiring harness for at least 3 h (but no more than 48 h)
in standard atmosphere. Next, wrap the wiring harness around a mandrel with a diameter of 20 mm
and inspect visually.
Then, remove the adhesive tape and test it for stickiness by exerting pressure with your thumb.
Requirements
During the wrapping test around a 20 mm mandrel, the wrapping must not rupture or exhibit cracks
or visible damage. Opening of the tape layers is not permissible.
After the test, the adhesive tape must still exhibit self-adhesive properties. Reduced stickiness as
compared to the unaged sample is permissible; however, full hardening or adoption of a paint-like
condition by the adhesive are not.
Result
The result "fulfilled" or "not fulfilled" is entered in the test report. Note special observations in the
test report.

5.5.9 Heat protection

If wiring harnesses are routed near hot locations, appropriately heat-resistant cables and sheathing
materials or suitable protective measures must be used. A differentiation must be made here
among the heat-reflecting, heat-insulating, and heat-dissipating effects of such protective materials.
Test scope
Only tapes with special heat protection requirements are tested.
Procedure
Measurement without heat accumulation
Perform the measurement based on SAE J2302 in a test apparatus that is open at the top. The
inner walls and outer walls are composed of bright stainless steel and are thermally insulated (e.g.,
glass wool). Use the Raymax 1330 model from Watlow (St. Louis, Missouri) with the dimensions for
a heated surface of (75 ± 2 x 320 ± 20) mm as the radiant heater.
Use a matte black silicon-carbide bar from Haldenwanger in Waldkraiburg (Ø 16 mm, length
320 mm) as the substrate.
Position the ceramic bar over the radiant heater at a distance of 15, 25, 40, and 60 mm in such a
way that the temperature sensor fastened with a heat-resistant adhesive tape (e.g., PI) lies exactly
on the side facing the radiant heater. Distance refers to the distance from the surface of the radiant
heater to the bottom of the ceramic bar.
Measure the temperature of the ceramic bar at radiant heater temperatures of (350 ± 5) °C and
(540 ± 5) °C. Take the reading after the equilibrium temp erature has been reached.
Page 31
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

Then, wrap the ceramic bar with the adhesive tape to be tested with 50% overlap over a length of
(280 ± 5) mm. Also wrap the temperature sensor, and repeat the measurement as described
above.
The detailed test setup is documented in Figure 6 and Figure 7.
Note: soiling on the products can reduce the temperature protection.
Measurement with heat accumulation
The ability of the specimen to dissipate heat is measured using a plate that partially covers the
specimen.
For all 4 measurements with a 15 mm distance from the ceramic bar to the radiant heater, a metal
plate (0,8 mm thickness, 100 mm width, 140 mm length), which is painted matte black and at room
temperature, is additionally fixed at a distance of 40 mm above the radiant heater after the
equilibrium temperatures have been reached. Measure the temperature rise occurring due to heat
accumulation after 2, 5, 10, 30, and 60 min.
The detailed test setup is documented in Figure 6 and Figure 7.

5.5.10 Flexibility
Harnesses must have a sufficiently high flexibility to ensure easy routing.

5.5.10.1 Flexibility in as-received condition

Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Procedure
The measurement is performed with DUTs from 40 cables (1,0 mm²) of the type "a" group, routed
in parallel, or on application-specific DUTs as 3-point bending test. The test setup is similar to the
one described in Section5.5.1.1, but with a jaw distance lv of 100 mm. The length of the DUTs is
300 mm. For application-specific harnesses with a significantly deviating outer diameter, the jaw
distance must be selected to be 7 times larger than the outer diameter. If necessary, check with the
responsible department. The DUTs must be tightly bundled at their ends to avoid that individual
strands are pushed out during the bending test.
Requirements
Not specified. The measurements serve to collect data.
Result
Specification of the flexural strength in N.

5.5.10.2 Flexibility when subjected to thermal short-term aging

Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Procedure
The test is performed as described in Section 5.5.10.1, but with DUTs which have been aged prior
to the test acc. to Section 5.5.1.2.
Requirements
Not specified. The measurements serve to collect data.
Result
Specification of the flexural strength in N.

5.6 Environmental protection & safety

The materials must meet the requirements of VDA 232101 and comply with the current legal
requirements.
The respective in-house standards of the automobile manufacturers apply (VW 50180 in this case).
In addition, the following evaluation procedure is recommended for evaluating emission behavior.
Page 35
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

5.6.1 Substances contained

Test scope
This test is performed on all types of adhesive tape.
Procedure
Determine the composition of the adhesive tape according to the latest "International list of
reportable substances" (ILRS).
Requirements
The adhesive tape to be tested conforms with the requirements from the latest ILRS, which also
represents the basis for the IMDS (International Material Data System).
Result
Conformity is confirmed in the test report.
Data regarding the composition must be filed in IMDS.

5.6.2 Fogging
This test is used to evaluate the fogging behavior of adhesive tapes used in the vehicle interior.
Under unfavorable conditions, substances may outgas from the adhesive tapes and condense on
cold parts. This may, for example, impair the view through the windshield. In addition, the
gravimetric fogging value is used as a measure of the total emission of substances prone to
outgassing.
Test scope
This test is performed on all adhesive tapes used in the vehicle interior.
Procedure
The test is performed based on DIN 75201, according to two methods: method A (3 h at 100 °C –
reflectometric) and method B (16 h at 100 °C – grav imetric). Bond together a 50 cm² specimen of
the adhesive tape with the adhesive surfaces and place in a specimen cup.
Requirements
The following values (Tabelle 9) must be aimed for (note: they are currently part of various in-
house standards):
Tabelle 9 Fogging values
Test Requirement
DIN 75201 A > 90 %
DIN 75201 B < 1,5 mg

Result
Reflectometer value in (%) and gravimetric value in (mg).

5.6.3 Emission of organic compounds

Substances prone to outgassing from materials may harm the environment and therefore must be
kept as low as possible: air pollution, unpleasant odor, or even health hazards for sensitive people.
Page 36
VW 60360-1: 2010-08

5.6.3.1 Measurement of components prone to outgassing (VOCs)

The test scope and the test procedure are defined in coordination with the vehicle manufacturer
according to its applicable environmental standards. However, the test should be performed
preferably by means of thermal desorption according to VDA 278 or by means of head space
according to VDA 277.

5.6.3.2 Odor test

The test scope and the test procedure are defined in coordination with the OEM according to its
applicable environmental standards. However, the test should be performed preferably in
accordance with VDA 270 (B3).
