The History of Cell Biology

This document explores the history and development of cell biology, including the discovery of cells and the
formulation of cell theory. It covers key scientists and their contributions to our understanding of cellular
structure in living things.

Discovery of Cells and Cell Theory
Both living and nonliving things are made of atoms, molecules, and compounds. How are living and nonliving
things different? The discovery of the cell was an important step toward answering this question.

All living things are made up of one or more cells. A cell is the smallest unit that can carry on all of the processes of
life. Beginning in the 17th century, curious naturalists were able to use microscopes to study objects too small to
be seen with the unaided eye. Their studies led them to propose the cellular basis of life.

Robert Hooke coins the term "cell" to describe chambers in cork

2 1674
Anton Von Leeuwenhoek perfects techniques for grinding microscope lens to make the first
microscope

3 1838
Mathais Schleiden concluded that plants are composed of cells

4 1839
Theodore Schwann concluded that animals are composed of cells

Those early scientists did experiments on living things and developed CELL THEORY
