CELLS A cell can replicate itself independently and hence they are known as the “building blocks of life”
CELL THEORY
Cell theory is the tenets proposed throughout the 19th century as a result of various
discoveries about cells, it is one of the basic principles of biology.
Proposed by the German scientists: Theodor Schwan, Matthias Schleiden and Rudolf
Virchow.
The cell theory states that:
1. THE CELL IS THE BASIC UNIT OF LIFE
the cell is the basic unit of structure and organization in organisms.
In order to consider an organism is living, it must have a cell.
One proof that an organisms is alive is just by looking at its cells is the
movement of the organelles inside it.
2. ALL LIVING ORGANISMS ARE COMPOSED OF CELL
all organisms are composed of one or more cells, within which processes of life
occurs.
3. ALL CELLS ARISE FROM PRE-EXISTING CELLS
All cells come from previously existing cells through the process of cell division.
It is interesting to note that every living things in the planet is related. We are
connected by the series of cell division that can be traced back to our first
ancestor or the first cell on Earth.
The MODERN VERSION of the cell theory includes the idea that:
1. ENERGY FLOWS (METABOLISM) OCCURS WITHIN THE CELL.
2. HEREDITY INFORMATION (DNA) IS PASSED ON FROM CELL TO ANOTHER CELL.
3. ALL CELLS HAVE THE SAME BASIC CHEMICAL COMPOSITION
ROBERT HOOKE
In 1665, British scientist Rober Hooke examined a piece of cork and found little structures in it
which he compared to “cellulae” (small compartment).
He named these structures “cells”. Later it was discovered that the cell he had found in the cork
were actually outer walls of former plant cell.
RUDOLF VIRCHOW
In 1855 Virchow concluded that “Omni cellula e cellula” which translate roughly from latin to
“cells only arise from other cells”
With this conclusion, the cell theory was completed.
