GR-8 BIOLOGY CHAPTER- 9 REPRODUCTION IN ANIMALS

1. Explain the importance of reproduction in organisms.
 Reproduction is termed to be a biological process in which organisms give birth to their offspring.
 Reproduction is meant for the survival of all living things.
2. Define sexual reproduction.
 Sexual reproduction is a type of reproduction that involves the fusion of male and female gametes, to
create a new organism with genetic material from both parents.
 In animals, the male gamete is the sperm, and the female gamete is the egg (ovum).
3. Describe any one method of asexual mode of reproduction.
Budding: In budding, the organism develops a bulge called bud which further develops into an adult organism
and separates itself from the parent body to lead an independent life. Eg; hydra.

4. Differentiate between internal fertilisation and external fertilisation.

INTERNAL FERTILISATION EXTERNAL FERTILISATION

(i) The fusion of male gamete and female gamete (i) The fusion of male gamete and female gamete
occurs inside the body of a female partner, such as takes place outside the body of a female partner,
human beings, birds, and mammal. such as in frog, fish and starfish.

(ii) Off-springs have a high chance of survival. (ii) Off-springs have a low chance of survival

5. What is metamorphosis? Give examples.

The transformation of larva into an adult involving sudden changes in the body of an animal during the life cycle of
an invertebrate or amphibian is called metamorphosis. Example, frog and butterfly.
6. Name the female and male reproductive organs.
The female reproductive organs are a pair of ovaries, fallopian tubes and the uterus. The male reproductive organs
are a pair of testis, sperm ducts and a penis.
7. Case study Question
A farmer noticed that his sheep and cattle give birth mostly in the spring season. He wondered why these
animals seem to follow a seasonal pattern for reproduction. Upon consulting a veterinarian, he learned that
many animals reproduce during spring when food is abundant, and the mild weather improves survival
chances for the newborns.
a) Why do animals like sheep and cattle often give birth in the spring?
Spring provides favourable conditions like warmer weather and abundant food, increasing the survival rate of new-
borns.
b) What are the two modes of reproduction.
i) Asexual reproduction ii) Sexual reproduction.
c) Describe the term viviparous.
The animals which give birth to offspring

8. Assertion and reason

Assertion (A): Internal fertilization occurs in animals like humans, birds, and reptiles.
Reason (R): Internal fertilization provides protection to the embryo inside the mother's body.
Answer: Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A.
