Election of 1824 & The Corrupt Bargain of JQ Adams & Clay Election of 1828 and Jackson's

victory
● Only one quarter of eligible voters casted a ballot in the Election of 1824 but doubled in
1828.
● Henry Clay convinced Congress to elect Adams so Adams could make Clay his secretary
of state, which was called a “corrupt bargain”.

● Thought Adams was a corrupt aristocrat.
Jackson's Spoils System and Rotation of Office
● The Spoils System was to reward political supporters with public office.
● Jackson periodically replaced officeholders to allow ordinary citizens to play a more
prominent role in government.

● Southerns were severely opposed to tariffs as the consumed many manufactured goods

● Reduced the tariff by 10 percent.

● Act - Provided transplanting of all Indian tribes east of the Mississippi River.
● Trail - Territory where natives would be free from whites.
Worcester v. Georgia (1832)
● Ruled that the Cherokee Nation was separate and Georgia’s laws did not apply.
Jackson and the Bank War (with the 2nd'BUS)
● Henry Clay presented Congress with a charter for the BUS so that Jackson would veto it
and lose the election.
● Clay made the BUS an election issue.

Platform of the Whig Party (anti-Jackson)
● Supporters of the American System, states’ righters, large northern industrialists, and
evangelical protestants were associated with the party.
The Specie Circular & The Panic of 1837
● Decree which required all public land to be purchased with hard money.
● Contributed to the Panic of 1837.
The Texas issue (including The Alamo and San Jacinto)
● Santa Anna trapped two hundred Texans in the Alamo at San Antonio and wiped them
out.
● Texans wiped out the Mexicans at Jacinto and captured Santa Anna.

● Commander in chief on the Texans.

● Democrats launched a campaign depicting William Henry Harrison as old and content
with a cabin and barrel of cider.

were still in slavery and oppressed.
