Reading Comprehension: Text 1

A. Pizza is one of the most popular foods in the world. Children between the ages of 3 and 11 prefer
pizza over all other food for dinner. But have you ever wondered where it all started from? If you
think of pizza as flat bread cooked in an oven, then its origins go back to the Middle East in ancient
times. In fact, historical writings mention the habit of soldiers baking flattened bread on their
shields and they later added cheese and dates. Pizza as we know it today started in Naples. This is
where the first pizzeria was opened in 1830, with a brick wood-burning oven covered with lava
stones from the volcano.
B. The first pizza delivery took place in 1889 when an Italian restaurant owner was asked to create
a special dish for the guest of honour, Queen Margherita. He wanted to include the colours of the
Italian flag red, white and green in his dish to honour the queen, so he added tomatoes, mozzarella
cheese and basil to focaccia bread. The restaurant owner Raffaele Esposito named this meal Pizza
Margherita. The pizza was delivered to the palace because the Queen did not want to go all the way
to the restaurant!
C. In 1905 Gennaro Lombardi opened the first American pizzeria in New York City and it is still
there today. However, pizza did not become popular until after World War II, when war veterans
stationed in Italy returned home dreaming about the pizza they had eaten there. Soon, pre-made
pizza pie mixes, frozen pizza, and pizzeria chains sprang up around the country.
D. The popularity of pizza continues to grow even today and many public events and festivals are
held in honour of this incredible dish such as the World Pizza Championship where the best cooks
from all over the world compete for the title of best pizza maker.
