LESSON 4:

SUBJECT PRONOUNS
Pronouns are words we use in the place of a full
noun. We have both subject and object pronouns:

Personal Pronoun - Subject I you he/she/it we they

The personal pronoun is used to refer to someone or something already


mentioned (he, she, it etc.), to refer to the person speaking (I, me etc.), or to
the person listening (you).
FORM FUNCTION
First Person Pronoun
Singular I subject
Plural we subject
Second Person Pronoun
singular you subject
plural you subject
Third Person Pronoun
singular he,she,it subject
plural they subject

I, he, she, you = a person


you, we = people

it = thing
EXAMPLE:
 Ibarra is not far from Quito.
 It is not far from Quito.
 Lorena and I are mothers.
 We are mothers.
 Gaby and Lucy are sisters.
 They are sisters.
Exercise 1 Try to fill the correct personal pronouns.

Long Form Short Form

I am I´m

 We normally use the long form of the verb to be (am, is, are) when we write.
Jhon is from China and He is fifteen years old.
 We normally use the short form of the verb to be (´m, ´s, ´re). When we speak.
What´s the capital of city of France. It´s Paris.

 In short answer we do not repeat the whole question. We use Yes or No, the subject
pronouns and the verb form. Am / I´m not, is/ isn´t, are/aren´t
Are you Spanish? Yes, I am.

 We use the long form of the verb to be in positive short answer.


Is she a teacher? Yes, she is.
 We use the short form of the verb to be in negative short answer.
Are you British? No, I´m not.

DEMOSTRATIVE PRONOUNS

The demonstratives this, that, these, those show where an object or person is in relation to the
speaker.
This (singular) and these (plural) refer to an object or person near
the speaker. That (singular) and those (plural) refer to an object or
person far the speaker.
