KIOWA LANGUAGE NEST -EASY REFERENCE GUIDE FOR KIOWA FAMILIES

Beginning Kiowa Language by Alecia Keahbone Gonzales

As a Kiowa family, it is extremely important that we pass on the foundational piece of our Kiowa
identity. This is our tribal language. In a world with populations soaring into the multi-billions, there are
only 12,000 people and their families today who have the responsibility to care for this sacred part of
ourselves. God has blessed us to be a part of this legacy. Remember these “rules” in the study and use
of the language.

1. The only time we speak Kiowa “wrong” is when we are not attempting to speak it at all.
2. We must not have hard feelings for one another.
3. We must support each other in this work and be kind in our dealings with one another.
4. There are no other rules.

*THIS IS ONLY AN EASY REFERENCE ADDITION TO:

THAUM KHOIYE TDOEN GYAH; Beginning Kiowa Language by Alecia Keahbone Gonzales. The use of this
easy reference guide is to be done in conjunction with this text and we strongly encourage everyone to
purchase a copy of Alecia’s book. It can be purchased at the University of Science and Arts book store.
There are many wonderful Kiowa stories and much more in this book, that is not within this easy
reference guide. We also strongly encourage tracking down as many Kiowa language texts as possible in
any orthography. Do not be concerned with spelling systems! All Kiowa language is good! But most of all
we encourage working one on one with your Kiowa elders when they and you are able to. Finally, this
was developed to facilitate home language learning with easy adaptations for a school or community
class setting. It is in a word doc format so families can add and delete, move around, change font styles
and letter sizes, etc. as they choose.
