Introduction
The Holy Quran was revealed to the Holy
Prophet (pbuh) through angel Jibrail. It is
the last book of Allah and Allah will guard
it from corruption. The Holy quran says,
“Surely we have revealed the reminder,
and no doubt we will guard it from
corruption”.
Importance

The Holy Quran is the first source

of Islamic law
Primary source of Islamic law
It is the last word of Allah and is
the supreme source of guidance.
Its teachings are accepted by every Muslim without
any question
It is the complete code of life that guides us both as
individuals and community.
It is unchangeable and unamendable due to its
D ivine nature
It is also independent as a source of law whereas the
other sources i.e. Hadith, Ijma and Qiyas are
dependent on it.
… ..And must be in line with the Holy Quran.
Approval
The Holy Quran says:
“O you who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the
Messenger(1), and those charged with authority among
you(2), and if you differ in anything among yourself, refer it
to Allah and His Messenger(3), if you believe in Allah and
the last day”
Here the phrase “Obey Allah” means obedience to the
orders of Allah mentioned in the Holy Quran. Thus it is the
source of Islamic law. The same verse also gives approval of
other sources as well i.e. Hadith(1), Ijma (2)and Qiyas(3).
Tafsir and Mufassir
Tafsir: It is the
interpretation of the Holy
Quran
Mufassir: The Muffasir is
the one who interprets
and clarifies meaning of
the Holy Quran
Why was Tafsir needed?
•Following the death of Holy Prophet (SAW), the
Muslims saw that there was need of Tafsir or
clarification of some of the verses of the Holy Quran
which seemed difficult to understand.

• The Muslims soon discovered that the best

explanation of the Holy Quran was when the Quran
itself explained a teaching.
E.g. Surah AL Maida verse one says:”…… Lawful to you are
all beasts of cattle, with the exceptions named” .In this
verse of Quran “ the exceptions named” are not outlined
but a little later in the third verse of the same Surah the
Quran clarifies the exceptions to which the earlier verse
refers.

This principle is called TAFSIR AL QURAN BIL QURAN i.e.

“clarification of the Holy Quran by the Quran”.
Sometimes the Holy Quran is explained by the Hadith of
the Holy Prophet (PBUH) e.g. method of prayer.
This is TAFSIR AL QURAN BIL HADITH or “clarification of the
Holy Quran by the Hadith”.
