Medicine is defined as a compound or

preparation used for the prevention or treatment
of disease. Most medicines are taken orally,
others are applied on skin, inhaled, taken
intravenously (injected).

Over-the-counter (OTC) Medicine

Over the counter medicine is also known as
nonprescription (can be bought without a
prescription or “doctor’s order”) medicine.

It is ordered and bought over the counter of

drugstore or pharmacies. OTC medicine is used
to treat or prevent common communicable
disease and symptoms experienced during an
illness.

COMMON OTC medicines include:

1. Analgesics- help to treat mild body pain but is
not an anti-inflammatory. Example of an
analgesic is “paracetamol” and “mefenamic acid”.
-wound
-toothache
Ex: Mefenamic Acid

2. Antidiarrheal-helps treat loose bowel

movement or LBM, a loose, watery, and
frequent defecation. There are (2) two types
pf antidiarrheal medicines- (1) one the
solidifies the stool and (2) one that relieves
stomach pain.
Ex. Loperamide (diatabs) is an OTC antidiarrheal.
Ibuprofen-to treat stomach pain.

3. Antipyretic- helps lower body temperature

during a fever. Aspirin and paracetamol (biogesic,
bio flu) are examples of antipyretic medicines.
-fever,cough,cold, body pain, and headache.

4. Antiseptic- helps treat swelling of body parts

due to infection. There are antiseptics that are for
external use only and applied on skin, or taken
orally to cleanse the mouth but are not to be
swallowed. Rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide,
and iodine are some examples.

Betadine

Alcohol
Agua Oxigenada (hydrogen peroxide)

chest congestion and difficulty in breathing
caused by build-up of phlegm and mucus around
the nasal and bronchial linings.
Decongestant medicines help by decreasing
swelling around the affected area and makes
breathing easy again.

Here some example of prescription medicine

At the top of the prescription is the Name of the

doctor and hospital it also includes the
complete address of the medical institution,
contact numbers, and other information the
institution finds necessary to include.
In that picture we can see the name of the
patient, address, age, sex and date that the

Under that is the name of the medicine can be
written either in its generic name or in its
commercial name or both. Beside it is the
dosage (100mg), the amount or quantity of
medicine that should be taken in the body for a
given period of time.
Example in the picture: 100mg
On its second part is the frequency is the
number of times the medicine should be taken
following the dosage at a given period of time.
Example in the picture: 2 puffs every 4 hours.

At the bottom is the name and signature of the

physician
Some prescription medicines are antibiotic,
antihypertensive and depressants.
1. Antibiotics-destroys pathogens or harmful
microorganisms that causes diseases.
Patients need a doctor’s instructions before
taking antibiotics, especially those with higher
doses.
Ex: Amoxicillin usually used by a patient with UTI.

2. Antihypertensive- helps control and maintain

blood pressure. High blood pressure, if not
managed well, may damage vital organs,
which can lead to heart attacks and kidneys
problems.

Ex: Losartan used to treat hypertension and

diabetic nephropathy.

3. Depressants-referred to as sedatives or
tranquilizers, are medicines that slow down
the central nervous system, which include the
brain, spinal cord and nerves.

These are given to people who experience

depressions, have mental problems or disorders,
or those about to undergo surgical operations.
Ex: Barbiturates are medications that cause you
to relax or feel drowsy.

Both over-the-counter and prescription

and misused, they can alter body functions
and processes and produce negative effects
that can put a person’s life at risk.
