Baptism(s)

2nd Ordinance of the Church

BAP´TISM, n. [Gr. βαπτισμα, from βαπτιζω,
from βαπτω to baptize; Sp. bautizar; It.
battezzare; Port. bautizar, or baptizar. These
seem to be from the Greek, by contraction. But
the Arm. badeza, badein, may be from bath, bad,
water.]
1. The application of water to a person, as a
sacrament or religious ceremony, by which he is
initiated into the visible church of Christ. This is
usually performed by sprinkling or immersion.
2. The sufferings of Christ. Matt. 20:22, 23.
3. So much of the gospel as was preached by
John,
Webstersthe Baptist. Acts 18.

The Earth’s Baptism
Noah’s - Baptism
18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for
the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to
death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in
prison;
20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the
longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the
ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls
were saved by water.
21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also
now save us (not the putting away of the filth of
the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience
toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of
God; angels and authorities and powers being made
subject unto him
Moses Baptism
10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that
ye should be ignorant, how that all our
fathers were under the cloud, and all
passed through the sea;
2 And were all baptized unto Moses
in the cloud and in the sea;
3 And did all eat the same spiritual
meat;
4 And did all drink the same spiritual
drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock
that followed them: and that Rock was
Christ.
John’s Baptism
“Baptism of Repentance”
3:1 In those days came John the Baptist,
preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of
heaven is at hand.
3 For this is he that was spoken of by the
prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying
in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the
Lord, make his paths straight.
4 And the same John had his raiment of
camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his
loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all
Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,
6 And were baptized of him in Jordan,
confessing their sins.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and
Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O
generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from
the wrath to come?
8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have
Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is
able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the
trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth
good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance:
but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose
shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you
with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly
purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner;
but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
Jesus’ Baptism
13 aThen cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan
unto John, to be baptized of him.
14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need
to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15 And Jesus answering said unto him,
Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to
fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went
up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the
heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the
Spirit of God descending like a dove, and
lighting upon him:
17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This
is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
James and John’s
Baptism
Mark 10:35-40
35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him,
saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us
whatsoever we shall desire.
36 And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for
you?
37 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on
thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.
38 But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye
drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the
baptism that I am baptized with?
39 And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them,
Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the
baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:
40 But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine
to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared.
Peter’s Baptism
Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel
know assuredly, that God hath made that same
Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and
Christ.
37 Now when they heard this, they were
pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to
the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren,
what shall we do?
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and
be baptized every one of you in the name of
Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye
shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
39 For the promise is unto you, and to
your children, and to all that are afar off,
even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
Believer’s Baptism
Rom 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we
continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin,
live any longer therein?
3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized
into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into
death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead
by the glory of the Father, even so we also should
walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the
likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness
of his resurrection:
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with
him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that
henceforth we should not serve sin.
7 For he that is dead is sfreed from sin.
Gal 3:22 But the scripture hath concluded all
under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus
Christ might be given to them that believe.
23 But before faith came, we were kept
under the law, shut up unto the faith which
should afterwards be revealed.
24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster
to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified
by faith.
25 But after that faith is come, we are no
longer under a schoolmaster.
26 For ye are all the children of God by faith
in Christ Jesus.
27 For as many of you as have been
baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Baptism for the Dead
1 Cor 15:29 Else what shall they do which are
baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at
all? why are they then baptized for the dead?

Baptism is NOT
necessary for Salvation
1 Corinthians 1:12–17 (KJV 1900): 12 Now
this I say, that every one of you saith, I
am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I
of Cephas; and I of Christ.
13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified
for you? or were ye baptized in the name
of Paul?
14 I thank God that I baptized none of
you, but Crispus and Gaius;
15 Lest any should say that I
had baptized in mine own name.
16 And I baptized also the household
of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether
I baptized any other.
17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but
to preach the gospel: not with wisdom
of words, lest the cross of Christ should be
made of none effect.
John 3:3–7 (KJV 1900): 3 Jesus answered
and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say
unto thee, Except a man be born again,
he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a
man be born when he is old? can he
enter the second time into his mother’s
womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say
unto thee, Except a man be born
of water and of the Spirit, he cannot
enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh;
and that which is born of the Spirit is
spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye
must be born again.
Acts 8:34–37 (KJV 1900): 34 And the
eunuch answered Philip, and said, I
pray thee, of whom speaketh the
prophet this? of himself, or of some
other man?
35 Then Philip opened his mouth,
and began at the same scripture,
and preached unto him Jesus.
36 And as they went on their way,
they came unto a certain water: and
the eunuch said, See, here is water;
what doth hinder me to be baptized?
37 And Philip said, If thou believest
with all thine heart, thou mayest. And
he answered and said, I believe
that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
