Summer/2020, AT6: Final Exam Module-1: Pavement Analysis and Design
Total = 50

Section: 3, Name: ID:

Notes (please read carefully):

• You must submit your answer script in your CEE250 class on 27/12/24 (Wednesday).
• Use the AASHTO 1993 pavement design protocol for all pavement analyses and designs.
• You have been given your ID-specific data that you must use in doing the analyses and designs.
• Use any needed table, graph/ nomograph from your class handouts or class textbook.
• Make reasonable assumptions, such as for Reliability, etc., if needed (specify in your answer script).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Truck Factor Calculation [10 marks]
A year-long truck survey was conducted using loadometer to find out the truck factor (Tf) your “Rural
Highway”, has which has both flexible and rigid pavement portions in different locations. It is initially
assumed that the structural number (SN) of flexible portions is 5, initial serviceability Po will be 4.5 and
terminal serviceability Pt will be 2.5. Calculate Tf (report the value up to 2 decimal points).

2. Design Traffic Calculation [10 marks]

For the rural highway discussed in the previous question, find out the cumulative total 18-kip Equivalent
Single Axle Load Applications (W18) in millions for your design period. Express the final value in millions
rounded to 2 decimal points.

3. Flexible Pavement Design [20 marks]

Using the AASHTO 1993 pavement design protocol and the attached data, do the thickness design for the
flexible pavement portions of the highway for which you have just determined the W18 (refer to question
#2). Show all calculations. Attach your relevant Nomograph with your own drawing lines and writing on it.

4. Rigid Pavement Design [10 marks]

Using the AASHTO 1993 pavement design protocol and the attached data, do the thickness design for the
rigid pavement portions of the highway for which you have already determined the W18 (refer to question
#2). Show all calculations. Attach your relevant Nomograph with your own drawing lines and writing on it.
