Biology Preparatory Paper

1. Define the term food chain. (0.5)

A food chain is a linear sequence of events in which energy is
transferred as one organism eats the other.

2. What are decomposers? Name any two ways in which

decomposers are useful. (2)

Decomposers are organisms that break down, decay and rot

organic matter, waste, and deceased organisms. Some
decomposers help with digestion in our body, others are used
to make dairy products like cheese, yoghurt etc.
Decomposers also clear the soil of dead bodies and waste
materials that are unusable.

3. Draw a food web with two producers, at least two predators and
their prey and decomposers. (2)
{example}
4. Draw a bacteria cell. (1)

5. Unscramble the following words and write their definitions.

(0.5 x 6 = 3)
a) tirnunets – nutrients, substances that supply living
organisms’ energy and help them grow.
b) ugnd – dung, animal droppings/waste/feces
c) raga – ellyj (agar jelly), a petroleum jelly placed in a petri
dish, used to grow microorganisms

6. Differentiate between a food chain and food web (0.5)

A food chain is a linear sequence of events, in which energy
is transferred, and it represents only one chain of events.
Whereas a food web is multitude of food chains compiled
together that represent all the plausible chains of
consumption by organisms in their ecosystem/habitat.
7. Complete the sentences-
(1)
Ecology is the study of living organisms in their environments.

Organic Matter is any substance produced by living organisms.

Some decomposers are microorganisms.

Animals like earthworms and termites feed on dead organisms and

waste; They are detritivores.

Fungus is usually a tangle of thin threads.

Protozoa are microorganisms with animal like cells
