The problems that can occur during the Venice flood barriers is that the
rising sea levels which can lead the city to be prone to flooding and
with climate change it can make the situation worse for the people in
Venice and they would have to evacuate or leave the city if flooding
occurs often, another problem is that the water causes damages to the
ancient buildings and canals of Venice which disrupts the people and
their businesses and also the tourism which Venice thrives on gets
affected, for the problems to be solved is that there is a project that
can help Venice reduce the flooding called MOSE project which has
mobile barriers that are installed at the inlets of the venetian lagoon
which these barriers are used to rise when high tides happen which
prevents flooding in the city.
2. How these problems arise is that Venice is built on a shallow lagoon
which has 118 small islands connected by the canals and the city is on
sea level making it very vulnerable to flooding and the geography does
not help because the wind patterns which are called the sirocco winds
from the south push the water from the Adriatic sea into the lagoon
that causes the floods and it can cause storms which are more
common in the fall or winter.
3. When they were building the flood barriers which covered about
millions of cubic squares and were dug up near Venice’s water intel’s
and they also built artificial islands which changed the flow of the
water in the lagoon because of this it disrupted the natural balance of
the lagoon which it needs regular water and sand to move naturally,
since the MOSE is now working it sometimes stops the water from
entering the lagoon during the high tides by preventing the floods it
stops the process of depositing sediment on the salt marshes which
are very important for wildlife and this is a concern because it can lead
to algae and poor water quality.
4. The consequences for these types of projects is that it damages the
salt marshes in Venice and in general it can damage the biodiversity in
the lagoon and it can harm the animals living in the lagoon. i think it is
better for humans to adjust instead of changing things in nature that
can permanently change the biodiversity or the natural course of
nature and couldn’t they just have built Venice outside the lagoon and
not on the lagoon.
