RETOUCHING REALITY
RETOUCHING REALITY
PRINCIPLES
AND BASIC
TECHNIQUES
OF IMAGE
MANIPULATION
WHAT IS IMAGE
MANIPULATION?
It is an art that involves
transforming or altering an
image using different
methods and techniques to
achieve desired results.
IMAGE MANIPULATION PRINCIPLES
(1) Choose the right file format.
• Try to make a real-life photograph into GIF to see the difference
between PNG, GIF, and JPEG. Knowing the purpose is the key to
finding out the best file format.
• The following are common image file formats used on the web.
IMAGE MANIPULATION PRINCIPLES
(2) Choose the right image size.
• A camera with 12 megapixels constitutes a bigger image size.
Monitors have a resolution limit, so even if you have a million
megapixels, it will not display anything. Thus, it is not always wise
to make our image big, especially on a website. Know how much
space you want the image to consume. Or have a “preview”
image where the audience has the option to “see full size.”

(3) Caption it.

• Remember to put a caption on images whenever possible. If it is
not related to the web page, then remove it.
PROPORTION
• It is probably one of the most
important things a designer
must possess if he wants to do
image manipulations.
• Proportion is largely about the
relationship of the size of one
element when compared to
another
• Remember that images which
are supposed to be far away
have to be smaller than the
ones that are closer.
TEXTURE
• Texture is the surface quality
of the image. It adds to the
depth of the image and blends
all the images together evenly.

• Remember if you do not have

a background for your photo
manipulation, you should use a
texture that will match the
word you are trying to set in
your art.
COLOR
BLENDING
• Not every image you use will
match your background,
texture, or even other images.
That is where color blending
comes in. Colors like pink,
white, and orange blend
together easily. That is what a
designer should look for at
first; colors readily blend.
EMPHASIS ON
DETAILS
• When creating a piece of art,
set one area as the main focus.
There are multiple techniques
to achieve that. One way is to
work on focusing attention on
the most vibrant, colorful or
sharp area in the design.
COMBINING
MULTIPLE IMAGES
• Images are like missing puzzle
pieces; without them, you can
never fully complete the
puzzle. So, choose them
carefully. You may need to
look at multiple stock images
before choosing the right ones
for your composition.
SHADOWS
• These also make images more
realistic, because they
emphasize the object
effectively. It is realistic in a
way that every item has a
shadow if it needs one and
every item is proportional to
everything else.

MANIPULATION
TECHNIQUES
(1) Cropping

Cutting parts away to

remove distracting and
irrelevant elements.

(2) Color Balance.

The ambiance and

tone of light of the
picture (ex: Warm or
Cool light).

(3) Brightness and
Contrast.

It is making the image

darker or lighter.

(4) Filters.

Examples are making the

photos look sketched,
grainy, classic black and
white or even let it have
neon color. This gives your
image a twist from its
original looks.
IMAGE
MANIPULATION
TECHNIQUES
(5) Changing the
background.

Adding a background to
make your image stand
out.
IMAGE
MANIPULATION
TECHNIQUES
(6) Removing the color.

Removing certain colors

from your image or
desaturating the color
of the image.
1. TEXT OVERLAID ON IMAGE
IMAGE • When text overlays on image
MANIPULATION or a solid color background,
there must be sufficient
TECHNIQUES contrast between text and
image to make text readable
(7) Combining text, with little effort.
graphics, and image.

Adding multiple
elements in your layout.
2. TEXT WRAPPED AROUND IMAGE
• In the wrap-around, the text follows the shapes of an image.
3. TEXT AND IMAGE INTERSECT

• The intersection of text and

image can create a dynamic
position. The visual elements
can intersect in several ways.

• Placing text within an image,

particularly a hollow vector
graphic as shown in the
lightbulb above.

• Placing text behind an image so

that is partially obscured.

• Placing text so that it resists in

the image, using the image as
the baseline for the text.
4. TEXT AND IMAGE ALIGNED
• You can achieve an orderly look by aligning visual
elements with each other and placing them in close
proximity.

5. TEXT AND IMAGE IN REPEATING SHAPES

• In visual design, repetition creates unity.
