Reading Comprehension 1

Hi Mom,
I'm having fun here at summer camp. The camp is great. It's in
the mountains. The weather is good. It's hot and sunny every day.
I'm sitting in my tent right now. It's seven o'clock in the evening,
so we're all relaxing. I'm waiting for my friends Jack and Tom, so
we can go and play soccer. Everyone is very friendly here. I'm
sending you a photo of me and my new friends. In the photo we're
at a lake near the camp. You can see Jack and Tom. They are
swimming in the lake - the water's very cold! My friends Mia and
Laila are sitting near the water. They're talking and laughing. I'm
in the boat with Luke. We're going back to the beach! The tall man
you can see is Mike, our camp leader. He's from Canada and he's
cool! He's watching us and laughing, too. I hope everything's OK
at home. Write and tell me what you're doing.
Love to Dad and Emma,
Sam

The 100 possessions challenge

How many possessions do we need? Most people in the modern

world have a lot of possessions. The idea of the 100 possessions
challenge is to live with only 100 possessions. The idea is
becoming popular in the U.S. and a few other countries. But is it
possible? Three teenagers give their opinions.
Mika

Only 100 possessions? I don't think so! I love my things - my

books, my cell phone, my computer! I have a lot of clothes and
shoes, and I have about 100 pairs of earrings! I want to keep
them all!
Jake

I like the idea of the 100 possessions challenge. I don't need

many things. I don't have many books or DVDs. I only have a few
clothes, and I don't have much furniture in my bedroom - only my
bed, desk, and computer. A lot of people buy things to be happy.
But really you only need friends and family to be happy.

A not very famous inventor

You probably don't know the name Martin Cooper. He was an

inventor. His name isn't famous, but his invention is very famous
- it was the cell phone. Martin Cooper was born in 1928 in Chicago
in the U.S. He was interested in phones when he was at college. In
the 1950s, when Martin was young, there weren't many phones in
people's houses because they were expensive. In the 1970s
Martin's job was at the phone company, Motorola. His job was to
design a car phone, but his idea was also to design a phone for
people to carry with them. Other companies weren't very

April 3'd, 1973 in New York. It was from Martin Cooper to another
businessman. The first cell phone was big, and it was over a kilo

Bob Marley
Bob Marley was born in 1945 in Jamaica. His father was in the navy
and was often away at sea, so Marley didn't see him very often. His
family was poor, and Marley left school when he was fourteen because
he wanted to be a musician.
He was a singer, and he also played the guitar. In 1964 he met some
other musicians who played the drums, keyboard, and guitar. They
formed a band, the Wailers, and they started recording reggae music.
Reggae music was popular in Jamaica at that time, but not many
people in other parts of the world knew about it. Bob Marley and the
Wailers made reggae music popular all over the world. Their albums
Exodus (1977) and Kaya (1978) made Marley an international star.
Bob Marley died in 1981, when he was only 36
years old, but many people still listen to his
music today. A lot of Marley's songs were
about the problems of black people and
poor people, and his music and
political ideas still influence many
young musicians.
