OBJECTIVES:

• Explain the spiritual aspect of the self and identity


• Demonstrate critical, reflective thought in the integrating
the spiritual self with the other selves previously discussed
• Identify the different aspects of the spiritual slef
• Examine oneself in the context of the spiritual self dicussed
in class.

THE SPIRITUAL SELF

Refers to the spirituality labels that the human is longing for


sense of meaning through morally responsible relationships
between diverse individuals, families, communities, cultures,
and religion
WHAT IS
SPIRIRUALITY?
- Is a belief that people can connect with something that is beyong mind
and matter

- an aspect of religious traditions, and also existential value system

- a way of experiencing that come about through awareness of supreme


dimension and that is characterized by certain identifiable values in
regard to self, nature, and whatever one considers ultimate

- to be spiritual is to stand in a relationship based on matters od the


soul’’ – Carson, 1989
Spirituality vs. Religion

Spirituality – is defined as relating to or affecting


the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or
physical things.

Religion – is about believing in a god or group of


gods and consciously adheres to the beliefs of
his/her religion.

Religion is define as belief and worship of a


superhuman controlling power, especially a God or
Gods.

RELIGIOUS CLASSIFICATION
THE BABAYLANS
Babaylans – considered as the first psychologist in
the Philipines; a spiritual leader and a medium.

Our ancestors believed that souls can exist outside


the body and that they continue to exist even after
death and become multo.
Dungan , spirit and soul
Dungan is a life force, an energy, an ethereal entity with a will of its own
that resides in the human body and provides essence to life; can
temporarily leave the body.

Ginhawa ( Visayan word for breath or breathe) – is responsible for the


harts ability to beat; may be affected by foreign elements.

Kaluluwa (kalag) is associated with wisdom and is believed to be in the


head. Kakambal is the soul of the living.
RITUALS
Rituals – is the performance of ceremonial acts prescribed by a tradition
or scared law. Ritual is a specific, observable mode of behavior exhibited
by all known societies.

Imitative rituals - are patterned after a myth and the ritual repeat the
myth.
Negative rituals – focuses on the rules of prohibition.
Sacrificial rituals – are seen as the earliest form of religion.
Life crisis rituals – are traditions of one mode or stage of life into
another.
SOCRECY
Barang - a malignant secrecy that usually targets a person.

Kulam – voodoo or witchcraft which uses black magic or


spells on a victim.

Albolario/mananambal – isa a traditional healer.
