Part-time jobs are very common in the UK and many other countries. Everyone has a story to
tell about their first part-time job: the horrible boss, the long hours, the terrible pay …
It’s not always easy for a teen to find and keep a part-time job while attending high school.
Balancing work with classes, homework, extracurricular activities and hanging out with friends
5 can be hard, but millions of teens are able to manage part-time work along with their other
responsibilities. That’s why there are different opinions on whether teenagers should have part-
time jobs, but the pros easily outweigh any cons. A teenager who works long hours every day
after school could see his or her schoolwork suffer, but a less intensive part-time job can be
wonderful learning experience. If kids can get to school on time, keep their marks solid, and
10 participate in school activities, part-time jobs in high school can be beneficial to their success.
There are different reasons for teens to take up a part-time job but one of the most
important is that they can get some more pocket money to buy their things and to hang out
with friends without depending on patents. The feeling of being more independent makes them
feel very good about themselves.
15 A lot of teens worry about not being old enough to find a job. However, there’s no reason for
that as employers hire teens for more informal activities, like babysitting, running errands or
garden work. Young people don’t need tons of experience to get a job. Most times they just
need to know where to look and how to address the manager. Teens can find part-time work
through people they know: family, neighbours, teachers, etc. another good option is social
20 media: posting on Facebook or Twitter is a quick way to let your hundreds of friends and family
members know that you’re looking for work. Adam, 16, said, “When I find a place that interests
me, I just go in and ask the manager for a job. My initiative usually impresses the manager and I
get the job. However, when it doesn’t work, I just move on and try my luck somewhere else.
You can’t give up.” Dan Gelbtuch, founder of the Youth Jobs Coalition, said, “The important
25 thing is to keep looking for a job. Teens who don’t give up always find the right work for them.
There are tons of jobs for a teen to do at any company.”

Few twentieth-century institutions have influenced Americans as much as the mass media. Especially
since World War II, television, radio, and more recently the Internet have encroached into the lives of
people from all classes and walks of life. The media generate an increasing wealth of information and
services daily. In their purest form, the media provide the populace with the information it needs to
5 function as a democracy.
In addition to informing the populace, this boundless store of information provokes controversy.
Many people object to the quality of much of the material found in the media - especially violent and
sexually explicit material. These critics respond by supporting legislation that places limits on media
content. Some laws forbid the production and distribution of material deemed obscene or indecent.
10 Others mandate the use of technological devices that restrict programming that is considered
inappropriate. However, such attempts to regulate the media are not welcomed by everyone. Many
people are adamantly opposed to placing restrictions on media content, claiming that these restrictions
violate the right to free speech.
The Internet is a particularly difficult technology to monitor because, unlike radio, television, and
15 newspapers, the information is not generated from a limited number of outlets, but from a galaxy of
websites and research engines. As a result, it has become nearly impossible to monitor Internet
information from the point of origin. Anyone can access sites, including pornographic ones, easily and
privately.
Although considerable disagreement exists between those who promote unfettered access to the
20 media and those who believe that the media must be restricted, there is no question that the mass media
are among the most pervasive elements of modern culture. The media will continue to exert a strong
influence on politics and pocketbooks, on recreation and on the marketplace.
The varying opinions expressed here reveal and explore the important place the mass media occupy
in American society and culture.
