Ten Insects That Affects Crop Rotation
There are certain insects in nature that significantly affect agricultural
produce which can be devastating to food production and can be an
economic burden to farmers. These pests can significantly impact crop
yields and health, making effective pest management strategies essential
in crop rotation systems. Ten of these insects are described in this
project.

1. Corn Rootworm (Diabrotica spp.)

A major pest of corn, larvae feed on the roots, leading to reduced
nutrient uptake and increased susceptibility to drought.

2
2. Soybean Aphid (Aphis glycines)
- These tiny insects suck sap from soybean plants, weakening them
and transmitting viral diseases. They can reproduce rapidly under
favorable conditions.

3
3. Cabbage Looper (Trichoplusia ni)
The larvae of this moth are known for their distinctive looping
movement. They feed on the leaves of cabbage and other brassicas,
causing significant damage.

4
4. Potato Beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata)
Larvae and adults feed on potato and eggplant leaves, leading to
defoliation and decreased yields. They can develop resistance to
pesticides.

5
5. Whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci)
These small, winged insects feed on the undersides of leaves, causing
yellowing and stunted growth. They also excrete honeydew, promoting
sooty mold.

6
6. Cutworms (Agrotis spp.)
- These caterpillars hide in the soil and cut young plants at the base,
causing sudden plant death. They are particularly harmful to newly
transplanted crops.

7
7. Thrips (Frankliniella spp.)
- Small, slender insects that feed on various crops, thrips can cause
discoloration and scarring on leaves and fruits, and can transmit plant
viruses.

8
8. Bean Leaf Beetle (Cerotoma trifurcata)
- This beetle feeds on soybean leaves and pods, causing defoliation
and pod damage. It can also transmit diseases like bean pod mottle virus.

9
9. Grasshoppers (Caelifera)
- These insects can consume vast amounts of foliage, particularly in
drought years. They are known to migrate and can devastate crops
rapidly.

10
10. Flea Beetles (Epitrix spp.)
- Small, jumping beetles that feed on the leaves of many crops,
especially seedlings. They create small holes in leaves, weakening plants
and stunting growth.
