“IT’S OKAY NOT TO BE OKAY”

Narrator: Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to a unique journey into the world
of ADHD, or what we called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. We are
about to embark on a role play that will shed light on the daily experiences and
challenges faced by individuals with this condition. Our intention is not just to
educate, but also to foster empathy and understanding.

Our main character is Lisa, a bright and energetic individual diagnosed with
ADHD. In our story, Lisa is not defined by this diagnosis, but rather, it's a part
of the rich tapestry that makes up their life. This condition presents both
hurdles and unique perspectives, which we will explore through various
scenarios.

As we navigate through Lisa's day, we will encounter situations that may seem
ordinary to most but are extraordinary for someone with ADHD. We will
witness the struggles, triumphs, and the constant effort required to manage
this condition.

We invite you to keep an open mind, to feel with Lisa, and to learn from their
experiences. Remember, this is not just Lisa’s story, but the story of millions
around the world. Let's step into their shoes and gain a deeper understanding
of living with ADHD.

Mother: Okay we will see a psychiatrist tomorrow.

Next day…

Setting: Psychiatric Clinic

Psychiatrist: Good morning, Ma’am! Correct me if I’m wrong, is this Lisa?
Mother: Good morning doc, yes this is Lisa.
Psychiatrist: Yes, my friend who is your school guidance counselor told me
about you. He also told me the problem with your child. How long has this
been going on?
Mother: Her sibling told me that it’s been going on for years. I wasn’t able
monitor her because I am very busy with my work.
Psychiatrist: Is this behavior present in school and in your home?
Mother: yes, doc!
Psychiatrist: I will give you a questionnaire for you to assess your child and for
me to diagnose her correctly.
(Psychiatrist gave the questionnaire to Ms. Linda)
Psychiatrist: Ms. Linda, I’m sorry to inform you. Your child’s behavior exhibits
the signs of ADHD.
Mother: What do you mean? I don’t understand what is ADHD?
Psychiatrist: ADHD is a condition that makes it hard for people to pay
attention, control their impulses, or stay still. It's like having a TV remote with
no pause button—thoughts and actions keep jumping around. Some people
with ADHD might have trouble focusing on tasks, while others might be really
fidgety or act impulsively without thinking. It's important to understand that
ADHD affects people differently, and with the right support and strategies,
individuals with ADHD can still do well in school, work, and life.
Mother: (crying) How did this happen?
Psychiatrist: Risk factors are things that make it more likely for someone to
have a certain condition or problem. For ADHD, some of these risk factors
include having family members with ADHD, being born prematurely or at a low
birth weight, exposure to toxins during pregnancy, and experiencing stressful
or unstable environments during early childhood.
: There are three types of ADHD:
1. Primarily inattentive type: People with this type have difficulty focusing,
finishing tasks, and following instructions. They are easily distracted and may
often lose track of things.
2. Primarily hyperactive-impulsive type: Individuals with this type show
behaviors like restlessness, impulsiveness, and difficulty in controlling their
actions, often acting before thinking.
3. Combined type: This type is a mix of the inattentive and hyperactive-
impulsive types, with individuals displaying symptoms of both.
: Based on her symptoms, we can conclude that your child is experiencing the
combined type of ADHD
Mother: So what should we do?
Psychiatrist: We can manage it by medications, but most importantly, we
must first accept the child as what she is, paggamit ug simple ug klaro nga
instruction, likayan ang mga butang nga maka distract sa iyaa, hatagan siya ug
reward kung aduna syay ma kompleto nga task, and lastly encourage physical
activity.

Setting: Back to the House

Lisa: Mao diayng lahi ra ko sa tanan! Mao diay walay makig friends nako.
Theres something wrong with me!
(The mother blames herself that because of what she did before during her
pregnancy, it all affects to her daughter.)
Mother: It’s because of me, my child suffers a lot! This is my fault! Pero ayawg
kabalaka nak, wala ka nag inusara ani. We will help you through this.

(Linda saw her daughter crying and she hug her and Lora also hugged them)
Setting: Classroom
Teacher: Class, before we start our discussion let me inform you na inyong
classmate na si Lisa, naa siyay special na condition nga maoy rason nganong
ingun ana iyang behavior. Unta makasabot ramo sa iyaha ug tabangan Ninyo
siya.
Whole Class: (shocked and gossiping)
(Lisa enter the classroom)
Whole Class: Hi Lisa!
Friends: Hoy Mia, pag sorry na ni Lisa, naa biya siyay condition. Ato siyang
sabton. Tala atong adtuon siya.
Mia: Lisa, I want to be your friend. I’ll help you with our discussion and help
you focus. I’m sorry for what happened in the past. Let’s forget it.
Lisa: Thank you Mia.
Teacher: Lisa, here’s a toy that can help you relax.
Lisa: (Takes the toy and plays with it)
Narrator: The whole class helped and understands her condition.
When Lisa experience inattention her teacher provides her an environment
free from distraction and one-on-one discussion.
When in a free time she talks with her psychiatrist to help track her progress.
When she becomes hyperactive, her friends play ball with her to help manage
her hyperactivity.

Throughout her time, Lisa faced numerous challenges. Keeping up with

assignments, staying focused in class, and managing her impulses often felt
like an uphill battle. However, with the support of her friends, teachers, and
the school's resources, Lisa embarked on a journey of self-discovery and
growth.
Through trial and error, Lisa learned to embrace her ADHD as a unique aspect
of her identity rather than a limitation. She discovered strategies that worked
for her, such as breaking tasks into smaller steps, using visual aids to stay
organized, and incorporating regular breaks into her routine. With
determination and resilience, Lisa found her stride.
