(Mechanical Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 70
Note: 1. Question Paper consists of two parts (Part-A and Part-B)
2. Answering the question in Part-A is compulsory
3. Answer any THREE Questions from Part-B
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PART –A (22 Marks)
1 a) Define a fit and a tolerance. [3M]
b) What is a fatigue stress concentration factor? [4M]
c) What do understand about a bolt of uniform strength? [4M]
d) Draw a sketch of triple riveted double cover butt joint with zig - zag type of [4M]
riveting.
e) What is the effect of keyway cut in to the shaft? [3M]
f) Write short note on leaf springs. [4M]
PART –B (48 Marks)
2 a) A cantilever of span 500 mm carries a vertical download load of 6 KN at free end. [4M]
Assume yield value of 350 MPa and factor of safety of 3. Find the economical
section for the cantilever among:
i) a circular cross section of diameter ‘d’,
h
ii) rectangular section of depth ‘h’ and width ‘t’ with = 2.
t
b) State and explain various theories of failure under static loading. [8M]
c) Find the diameter of shaft required to transmit 60 kW at 150 rpm if the maximum [4M]
torque is likely to exceed the mean torque by 25% for a maximum permissible
torsional shear stress of 60 N/mm2. Also find the angle of twist for a length of
2.5 meters. Take G = 80 GPa.
3 a) Explain the types of fluctuating stresses. [3M]
b) A machine component is subjected to a flexural stress which fluctuates between [8M]
+300 MN/m2 and –150 MN/m2. Determine the value of minimum ultimate
strength according to: i). Modified Goodman relation; and ii). Soderberg relation.
Take yield strength = 0.55 Ultimate strength; Endurance strength = 0.5 Ultimate
strength; and factor of safety = 2.
c) A steel link having a rectangular section is subjected to a repeated axial load of [5M]
50,000 N with a medium shock. Determine the section if the endurance limit be
250 MPa with a design factor 1.5. Take side ratio as 2:1. Size factor may be taken
as 0.85 and surface finish factor as 0.88.
4 a) An air compressor cylinder of effective diameter 300 mm is subjected to air [4M]
pressure of 1.5N/mm2. The cylinder head is connected by means of 8 bolts, having
yield strength of 350 N/mm2 and endurance limit of 240 N/mm2. The bolts are
tightened with an initial pre load force of 1.5 times that of the external force. A
copper gasket is used to make the joint leak proof. Assume stress concentration
factor of 2.5 and factor of safety of 2. Determine the required size of the bolt.
b) A bracket carrying a load of 15 KN is to be welded as shown in below figure. Find [12M]
the size of weld required if the allowable shear stress is not to exceed 80 MPa.
All dimensions are in mm.
5 a) Design a sleeve and cotter joint to resist a tensile load of 60 KN. All parts of the [6M]
joints are made of the same material with the following allowable stresses:
σt= 60 MPa, τ= 70 MPa, σc = 125 MPa.
b) A steel solid shaft transmitting 15 kW at 200 rpm is supported on two bearings [10M]
750 mm apart and has two gears keyed to it. The pinion having 30 teeth of 5 mm
module is located 100 mm to the left of the right hand bearing and delivers power
horizontally to the right. The gear having 100 teeth of 5 mm module is located
150 mm to the right of the left hand bearing and receiver power in a vertical
direction from below. Using an allowable stress of 55 MN/m2 in shear, determine
the diameter of the shaft.
6 a) Explain types of couplings. [4M]
b) Design a cast iron flange coupling for a mild steel shaft transmitting 90 kW at [12M]
250 rpm. The allowable shear stress in the shaft is 40 MPa and the angle of twist is
not to exceed 1⁰ in a length of 20 diameters. The allowable shear stress in the
coupling bolts is 30 MPa.
7 a) How do you specify a leaf spring and indicate the specification in a sketch? [4M]
b) At the bottom of an elevator shaft a group of 8 identical springs are set in Parallel [12M]
to absorb the shock of the elevator in the case of failure. The elevator Weighs
40 kN. Assuming the elevator has a free fall of 1.5 m from rest; determine the
maximum stress in each spring is made of 30 mm diameter rod. For each spring,
the spring index is 8 and the number of active coils is 12. Take G=83 GN/m2.
