About The Event:

The Client Counselling Competition promotes greater knowledge and


interest among law students in the preventative law and counselling
functions of law practice. It also encourages students to develop
interviewing, planning and analytical skills in the lawyer- client relationship
in the law office. Interviewing and advising are a significant part of most
lawyer’s work. The Competition provides an opportunity for a valuable
educational and cultural interchange between students, law teachers, and
legal practitioners. This competition aims at enhancing skills relating to

ELIGIBILITY:

Students pursuing their full-time 3-year LLB or 5-year LLB program


from Narvadeshwar Vidhi Mahavidyalaya, University of Lucknow, are
eligible to apply.

TEAM COMPOSITION:
A team shall consist of Two members.
REGISTRATION:
Interested teams/Team In-Charges are required to provisionally
register for the competition by way of personally contacting the
coordinators
Registration fees can be submitted through both online and offline
methods.

Each team shall be allotted with a unique team code, which shall be
used to identify the teams during the competition.

Registration Fees:

The registration fee for each team is Rs.200 (Rupees Two Hundred
Only)

ANONYMITY OF TEAMS:-

Teams shall not reveal their identity in any form during the
Competition, except by the means of their Team Code allotted by the
society.
Any violation of the Rules shall attract severe penalty or
disqualification as determined by the society. The decision of the
society in this regard shall be final and binding; not subject to
challenge.
NATURE OF THE COMPETITION:-
1.1 Competition shall simulate a client’s interview at a law office/chamber.

1.2 Each round shall be divided broadly into two segments, i.e.
(a) Client-Consultation Session (b) Post- Consultation Session.
In the client-consultation session, Participants shall be expected to
extract factual information from the client, briefly analyse the issue(s)
at hand, and make recommendations to the client in order to resolve
his or her problem.
In the post-consultation session, the Participants shall be expected to
legally analyse the interview and the various issues the matter (or case)
presents and discuss a future course of action. They shall further be
expected to discuss the recommendations made by them to the client
and whether an alternative approach could be or have been adopted
to attain a better outcome from the session. The judges may, during
this period, question the participants on their presentation.
1.3 It is clarified here that the Participants may tender legal advice to their
client(s) with reference only to the laws prevailing to the country of his or
her residence.
1.4 Participants are advised to keep in mind professional rules of ethics
and conduct, as are applicable to lawyers, and act in accordance with
them during rounds. All participants, regardless of the country of their
residence, shall be deemed subject to the rules and regulations as issued
by the Bar Council of India under the Advocates Act, 1961 or any other
regulatory body.
DRESS CODE:-
The participants shall adhere to the following dress code while in the
courtrooms:
a. Ladies: White shirt and black trousers or skirt along with a black blazer.
b. Gentlemen: White shirt, black trousers, a black tie, a black blazer, and
black shoes.
STRUCTURE OF THE COMPETITION:-
The competition will be held across a span of 2 days, commencing from

Client Counselling Problem:-


The problem for Preliminary shall be provided one day before the
competation.
Semi final and Final round problem shall be provide half an hour
before the competition.

Theme:-

1. Law of Contract 2. Family Law


3. Indian Penal Code 4. Constitutional Law

Preliminary Rounds:-

1. There shall be Two preliminary rounds.


2. The Advocates shall be allotted a total of 20 minutes, where; 15
minutes is for Client Counselling session and 5 minutes is for Post
Counselling Session. Any extension of time beyond the specified
period shall not be allowed. However, the time can be extended by the
judges for asking questions.
3. The problem for the preliminary rounds shall be provided to the
participants one hour before the competition.
4. The Top teams shall advance to the Semi-Finals.
Semi Finals:-
1. The Semi-Finals will be a knock-out round.
2. The top 2 teams, with the highest total scores in these rounds, shall
qualify for the Final round.
3. Each team shall get a total of 25 minutes to present their case. where;
15 minutes is for Client Counselling session and 10 minutes is for Post
Counselling Session. Any extension of time beyond the specified
period shall not be allowed.
4. The problem for the semi-finals shall be provided to the participants
half an hour before the competition.

Finals:-
1. A team will be credited with a win in the Final round if their total marks
are higher than those of its opponent team.
2. Each team shall get a total of 30 minutes to present their case. where;
20 minutes is for the Client Counselling session and 10 minutes is for
Post Counselling Session. Any extension of time beyond the specified
period shall not be allowed.
3. The problem for the finals shall be provided to the participants half an
hour before the competition.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION:-
The team performance of the Speakers shall be judged in all rounds on
the basis of the following criterion: -

a) Observation Rounds:-

1. Relevancy of information extracted, outlining the problem.


2. Tactics used to make client comfortable to understand Client goals and
expectations.
3. Moral and Ethical Issues: Recognized, clarified, and responded to any
moral or ethical issues which may have arisen, without being
prejudicial in judgments.
4. Alternative Course of Action suggested (Legal/ non-Legal).

b) Post Consultation Session:-

Post-Interview Reflection- explaining the strengths and limitations of


their interviewing and counseling skills, and their handling of the
substantive aspects of the client’s problems (legal and non-legal),
provided for an effective follow-up.
Problem Analysis and Effective Conclusion: Analyses of the client’s
problem with creativity and from both legal and non-legal
perspectives, resulting in a clear and useful formulation of the
problem.
Effective answers to Judges.
CERTIFICATION, PRIZES AND AWARDS

• The Team that scores the highest in the Final Round shall be declared
as the “Winner” and shall be awarded a “Medal” and Every Individual
will also be awarded a “Medal” and “Certificate of Merit”.
• The other Team that qualifies to the Final Round shall be declared
as the “Runners-Up” and shall be awarded a “Medal” and Every
Individual will also be awarded a “Medal” and “Certificate of
Merit”.
• The "Best Counsel" shall be awarded a “Medal” on the basis of
prelims score.
• The "Best Client" shall be awarded a “Medal” and a "Certificate of
Merit"
• on the basis of prelims score.
• Each participant shall be awarded a “Certificate of Participation”.
MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS:-

(i) Any behavior of indiscipline with the society or any other staff, member,
or student volunteer shall be dealt with strictly and may lead to immediate
disqualification from the competition without the scope of appeal.
(ii) No team shall ask for feedback immediately on completion of any
round. However, at the end of all the rounds, the participants may talk to
the judges, with the minimum inconvenience caused to them.
(iii) The organizing committee reserves the right to amend, modify or
repeal any of the rules if so required and as they deem appropriate.
Participating teams shall receive adequate notice of any/all such
amendments or modifications to the rules.
(iv) If anything, is not covered by rules, the decision of the organizing
committee will be binding.
(v) No team is allowed to use mobile phones during any of the observation
rounds
(vi) If any member of a team is notified or informed of any detail or
information concerning the Competition, it shall be deemed as if the said
team as a whole has been duly notified or informed, however, the
communication will be made to all but to the possible extent. Also, the
individual is responsible to communicate the information with the team.
