MIDTERM TEST–AUGUST 2023
CLASS: X TIME: 2 Hrs.
SUBJECT: Science MAX MARKS: 50
NAME: DATE: 08.08.23
SECTION A (3 x 1 = 3)
1. Write the balanced Chemical equation involved in the process of photosynthesis.
2. Define: a) power of accommodation b) least distance of distinct vision.
3. Assertion (A): The aqueous solutions of glucose and alcohol do not show acidic character.
Reason (R): Aqueous solutions of glucose and alcohol do not ionizes to produce H+ ion.
a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
c) A is true but R is false.
d) A is false but R is true.
SECTION B (5 x 2 = 10)
4. What are bifocal lenses? Under what conditions are these required by a person.
5. A cloth strip dipped in onion juice is used for testing a liquid X. The liquid X changes its odour.
Which type of an indicator is onion juice? Define the term and give other examples of same kind.
6. Ventricles have thicker muscular walls than atria? Give reasons
7. About 180 litres of filterate is produced each day, but only 1.5 litre of urine is excreted out. Justify
this statement.
8. The pharynx leads to trachea as well as to the esophagus. The 2 openings lie very close to each other.
Yet the food we swallow does not go to trachea. Why?
SECTION C (6 x 3 = 18)
9. Draw a neat labeled diagram of nephron
10. a) What is the role of acid in stomach?
b) How is small intestine designed to absorb digested food?
11. What eye defect is hypermetropia? Describe the cause and corrective measures for hypermetropia
with suitable diagrams.
12. A person cannot see objects clearly beyond 50cm. Find the power of lens to correct the vision.
Support your answer with diagrams of defective eye and corrected eye.
13. State reasons for the following:
i) The milk man adds baking soda to milk.
ii) Dry hydrogen chloride gas does not turn blue litmus red whereas dilute hydrochloric acid does.
iii) Curd is not kept in copper and brass utensils.
14. A 2 mL of a solution X which turn’s red litmus blue is added to a few pieces of granulated zinc metal
taken in a test tube. When the content is warmed, a gas evolves which is bubbled through a soap
solution before testing.
(i) Identify ‘X’ if one of the product formed is sodium salt.
(ii) How will you test the gas evolved?
(iii) Write the balanced equation for:
a) The chemical reaction involved.
b) The reaction of X with sulphuric acid.
SECTION D (1 x 4 =4)
a) The Tyndall effect is related to scattering of light. The blue colour of the sky, colour of water in the
deep sea, the reddish colour of sun at sunrise and sunset are the colourful phenomenon of light related to
scattering. The spreading of light when it strikes to small dust particles, smoke particles which are present
in the air is called as scattering of light. When we will send the beam of light through the true solution we
will observe the path of beam is not visible. While in case of colloidal solution the path of the beam is
visible because of colloidal particles which are somewhat larger in size. We know that atmosphere
contains large number of very small particles it means it is a heterogeneous mixture which contains smoke
particles, tiny water droplets, suspended particles of dust and air. When light passes through such a
heterogeneous mixture the path of the light becomes visible because it strikes with such particles. This
effect is called as Tyndall effect. Sometimes we can see the visible beam of light entering into the smoke
filled room through a small hole. In canopy of dense forest also, the light coming shows the visible path.
Here the scattering of light is due to the water droplets present in the mist. In case of scattering of light, if
the particles are having very small size then the light scattered more is of shorter wavelength that is blue
colour and scattered red light is less of longer wavelength.
i) Which phenomenon is responsible for reddening of the sky during sunset and sunrise?
ii) Name the colours that have the longest and shortest wavelength in the spectrum.
(OR)
State the reason for advanced sunrise and delayed sunset.
b) A student collected common names and formulae of some substances but he forgot to note which formula
is for which compound. Help him to match the correct formula.

(i) Caustic soda (a) Na2CO3.10H2O

(ii) Bleaching powder (b) CaO
(iii) Washing soda (c) NaOH
(iv) Lime (d) CaOCl2

SECTION E (3 x 5 =15)
15. Give reasons for the following:
a) Why do stars twinkle and planets do not twinkle?
b) Why are danger signals red in colour?
c) Why does the sky appear blue?
d) How is a rainbow formed?
16. Describe the flow of blood in human heart with a neat labelled diagram
17. a) You have four solutions A, B, C and D. The pH of solution A is 6, B is 9, C is 12 and D is 7.
(i) Identify the most acidic and most basic solutions.
(ii) Arrange the above four solutions in the increasing order of H+ ion concentration.
(iii) State the change in colour of pH paper on dipping in solution C and D.
b) Define water of crystallization with example.
c) A white powder is added while baking breads and cakes to make them soft and fluffy. Write the
name of the powder. Name its main ingredients. Explain the function of each ingredient. Write the
chemical reaction taking place when the powder is heated during baking.
