ABSTRACT
Project Loon is a research and development projects being developed by Google
with the mission of providing internet access to rural and remote areas. Billions of people
across the global still don’t have reliable, affordable access to the internet they donot know
how the internet help the world to communicates, learns, governs, and exchanges ideas.
There is still 2/3 of the population who are away with it. To overcome this problem, project
loon was started and this works on the access of internet to everyone. Loon is a huge
balloon filled with helium gas. The outer part of the balloon is made up of polyethylene
sheets and this makes the balloon stronger and the balloon with stand even in the harsh
climatic conditions of the stratosphere. Under the envelope of the balloon, it has a tiny box
which has all the required electronic equipment like circuit system, control system,radio
antennas,battery etc of the loon. The balloons are sent up into the stratosphere up to a
range of 20km, the software helps to move the balloon into the right position. Every
balloon beams a connection of internet to the antennas which are present on the ground
and the signal travels between balloons and to ground stations connected to ISPs. If
successful, this technology could provide internet access without expensive fiber
cable infrastructure.Here the balloons create an aerial wireless network with speeds of up
to 3G. They are manoeuvred by adjusting their altitude to float on wind currents identified
using NOAA wind data.
INTRODUCRION:-
Project Loon uses helium balloons to provide internet access to rural and remote
areas around the world . The project uses high altitude balloons placed in the Stratosphere
at an altitude of about 32 km to create an aerial wireless network with up to 3G-Like
speed.The ballon is used to gather weather information such as atmosphere
pressure,temperature,humidity and wind speed. This project is developed by a much
known developing company “GOOGLE” .Also this technology will be very helpful in the field
of Education, Medical, Communication,emergency response and many more. In 2011, the
unofficial development of the project began under Google X labs.On 14 June 2013, Google
announced this as an official project.
WORKING PRINCIPLE:-
 Each super-pressure balloon is massive with a whopping 15-meter diameter.It is
made of very thin ,very light polyethylene plastic though, so it lifts up the sky easily.
 It is strong enough to lift the light computer and other electronics. All these are
powered by a solar power panel.The balloons float in the Stratosphere , twice as
high as aeroplanes and weather.
 Users of the service connect to the balloon network using a special internet antenna
attached to their building.
 The signal travels through the balloon network from balloon ,then to a ground-based
station connected to an internet service provider.
 The small box (payload) hangs below the envelope, and looks very similar to the
basket in a hot air balloon.
 It holds electronic devices, such as circuit boards, radio antennas, solar panels,
batteries, GPS, and devices to monitor weather conditions.
 The circuit boards control the overall balloon system and radio antennas are
for communications
APPLICATION:-
 Education
 Improve Communication.
 Health and medicine.
 Weather surveillance.
 Collaboration to work together in various business fields.
 It used in disaster affected regions, deserts and also used in the developing
countries that can’t afford underground Fiber cable for internet .
CONCLUSION:-
Loon was a radical approach to expanding internet connectivity. Instead of trying to
extend the internet with traditional ground-based infrastructure,Loon took to the sky with
a network of balloons. In this century,Google’s project loon provides a very valuable help to
poor people.Although the Google loon ended up in 2021 by company due to commercial
crices,but it’s many technology used in another projects in various fields.
