Background

Smoking: Smoking is the common practice of igniting the end of a cylindrical tube
commonly known as a cigarette. Cigarettes consist of nicotine, which releases
smoke upon ignition and that smoke is inhaled. This practice can create an
unhealthy dependence on nicotine, negatively impacting your mental health. A
common physical health issue associated with smoking is lung cancer. This is due
to the fact that it consists of carcinogens which will affect the cellular DNA
negatively allowing the development of cancer in the lungs.

Vaping: Vaping, like smoking, contains nicotine which when inhaled can have a
negative impact on your physical health and can lead to dependence on nicotine,
which in turn causes mental deterioration. Unlike traditional cigarettes, which burn
tobacco, modern technology has led to the development of vaping devices. These
are devices that run on batteries to heat up liquids inside that usually consist of
nicotine. Although vaping is a modernized form of smoking, there is no scientific
evidence supporting the idea that it is a safer alternative to smoking.

3
Problem Statement

What are the effects of nicotine addiction (mainly from vapes and cigarettes) on
the mental health among students in Holy Cross College forms 4, 5 and 6?

4
Research Objective

The research objectives of my questionnaires are:

1) Determining if nicotine causes significant negative effects to physical or
mental health.

2) The number of students that use nicotine in the sample size chosen.

3) To investigate how nicotine addiction affects stress and coping mechanisms

among students in Forms 4, 5, and 6.

5
Method
1) A total of 30 students were taken from forms 4, 5 and 6 to partake in the
questionnaire I have prepared to determine the impacts on the mental health
of students that use products that contain nicotine.

2) Using the data which was gathered from the questionnaire, it was
documented in the forms of tables and graphs after analysis for ease of
understanding.

Limitation
1) Possible dishonest answers due to students not trusting their status of being
anonymous in this questionnaire. This can also lead to the assumption of
possible repercussions if nicotine use is valid.

Assumption
1) The nicotine use is only that from cigarettes and commonly sold vapes.
