FLUID ASSIGNMENT - [GROUP 1] ROLL NO: 1-10

1. (a) Deduce the Euler equation using the equation of continuity and equation of motion.[07]

(b) Define Streamlines, Streak lines and Path lines. [02]

(c) Briefly discuss the concept of Lagrangian and Eulerian Specifications.[01]

2. (a) A Pitot tube was used to measure the quantity of water flowing in a pipe of 0.30 m diameter.
The water was raised to a height of 0.25 m above the centre line of pipe in the vertical limb of the
tube. If the mean velocity is 0.78 times the velocity at the centre and coeffcient of Pitot tube is 0.98,
find the discharge in the pipe line. The static pressure head at the centre of the pipe is 0.2 m.[05]

(b)Explain the working principle of the orifice meter. Derive the equation of the volumetric discharge
rate through an orifice meter .[05]

3. (a) In the equipment, a pump draws a solution, specific gravity =1.84, from storage tank through a
3-in. (75 mm) Schedule 40 steel pipe. The efficiency of the pump is 60%. The velocity in the suction
line is 3 ft/s (0.914 m/s). The pump discharges through a 2-in. (50 mm) Schedule 40 pipe to an
overhead tank. The end of the discharge pipe is 50 ft (15.2 m) above the level of the solution in the
feed tank. Friction losses in the entire piping system are 10ft-lbf/lb (29.9 J/kg). What pressure must
the pump develop? What is the power of the pump? The cross-sectional area for 3 and 2 inch pipes
are 0.0513 and 0.0233 ft² respectively[05]

(b) A fluid is between two rectangular parallel horizontal plates, havinglength L and separated by a
distance h. The flow is steady and only inthe y direction. A force is applied to upper plate to maintain
a velocity Vh . Calculate the following:

i. Velocity profile

ii. Pressure drop per unit length

iii. Maximum velocity, average velocity . [05]

4. (a)A horizontal cylindrical continuous decanter is to separate 1,500 bbl/d (day) (9.93 m3/h) of a
liquid petroleum fraction from an equal volume of wash acid. The oil is the continuous phase and at
operating temperature has a viscosity of 1.1 cP and a density of 54 lb/ft3 (865 kg/m3).The density of
the acid is 72 lb/ft3 (1,153 kg/m3).Compare (a) the size of the vessel and (b)the height of the acid
overflow above the vessel floor.[05]

b) What is minimum fluidization velocity and how can it be determined?[05]

5. (a) Derive the continuity equation for incompressible flow and explain each term in the equation.
[06]
(b)Why is the continuity equation important in analyzing fluid flow through pipes and channels. [02]

(c)What are the assumptions made when deriving the continuity equation for a steady and
incompressible flow. [02]

6. (a) What is Bernoulli's equation in fluid Mechanics, and what are its assumptions. [02]

(b) Water flows from a tank open to the atmosphere through ripe at the bottom. Derive an
expression for the exit velocity of the water using Bernoulli's equation. [04]

(c) Water enters a horizontal pipe of non-uniform cross Section with a velocity of 0.6 m/s and leaves
the other end with a velocity of 0.4m/s. At the first end, with a Pressure of water is 1600 N/m².
Calculate the pressure of the water at the other end. Density of water = 1000 kg/m3. [04].
