Roads and Development: A Political Economic Study of Road Infrastructure Impact on
Local Economies in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia Districts of Assam
The Northeast region of India has historically faced significant infrastructure deficits,
particularly in terms of road connectivity, limiting its access to broader economic opportunities.
In recent years, however, there has been a notable push towards building new infrastructure that
connects previously isolated local economies to national and international markets. While this
surge in infrastructure promises economic growth and development by the state, its effects, both
positive and negative, on the existing local economies of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia Districts of
Assam remain under explored.
Thus, through my research, I shall focus on how the expansion of road infrastructure is affecting
the previously isolated economies in the Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts of Assam. Such
economies traditionally relied on subsistence-based, localised economic systems closely tied to
their land, culture, and ecological surroundings. I seek to explore how the opening up of these
regions to external markets is reshaping traditional livelihoods, resource management, and social
structures.
One key objective is to investigate whether the increasing infrastructural push, and thereby
exposure to national and global markets, has led to the erosion of local economic practices, or
whether such economies have found ways to adapt and accommodate these changes.
Additionally, another objective of this study is to explore whether integrating local economies
into broader development frameworks through infrastructural expansion aligns with the needs
and dynamics of these communities. I also seek to explore whether this economic integration is
beneficial for the long-term sustainability of traditional local livelihoods, or if there are
alternative models that could better serve these communities.
Key research questions include: How are local economies adapting and accommodating new
economic influences? To what extent does road infrastructure play a role in facilitating the
integration of local economies into broader development structures? What are the ecological and
social impacts of these changes?
