Practice worksheet for Electricity and Circuits

INSTRUCTIONS

General:
(i) The question paper comprises of four sections, A, B, C and D, You are to attempt all the sections
(ii) All questions are compulsory.
(iii) All questions of sections A, B, C and D are to be attempted separately.
(iv) Question number 1 to 10 in section A are one marks.
(v) Question numbers 11 to 16 in section B are two marks.
(vi) Question numbers 17 to 20 in section C are three marks.
(vii) Question number 21 to 24 in section D is five marks.

SECTION A

1. List any two insulators. [1]

Ans. Plastic, wood are two examples of insulator. [1]
2. Name any two conductors. [1]
Ans. Metals and water are two examples of conductor. [1]
3. Name the device that helps in breaking a circuit. [1]
Ans. The device that helps in breaking a circuit is called switch. [1]
4. How many terminals does an electric cell has? [1]
Ans. An electric cell have two terminals. [1]
5. Define electric current. [1]
Ans. The flow of electricity is called electric current. [1]
6. What do you understand by a closed circuit? [1]
Ans. A circuit in which current can flow is called closed circuit. [1]
7. What type of current is generated by dry cell? [1]
Ans. The current generated by dry cell is DC (Direct Current). [1]
8. What is an open circuit? [1]
Ans. The circuit in which current can not flow is called open circuit. [1]
9. Why is pure water a bad conductor of electricity? [1]
Ans. Pure water cannot conduct electricity because it lacks ions. [1]
10. How is electricity generated in a dry cell? [1]
Ans. Dry cell generates electricity by the reaction of chemicals placed inside it. [1]

SECTION B

11. Identify the figure below. What is its function? [2]

Ans: The figure above represents a circuit. [1]
The electric circuit provides a complete path for electricity to pass (current to
flow)
between the two terminals of the electric cell.
[1]

12. What is a switch? How does it regulate the flow of electric current? [2]
Ans. A switch is a device which regulates the electric current in a circuit. [1]
When it is ‘on’, circuit is closed and when it is ‘off’, circuit is open.
[1]
13. What do you mean by electric circuit? What are the different types of circuits? [2]
Ans. The closed path of flow of electric current is called electric circuit. [1]
It may be closed circuit or open circuit.
[1]
14. Name any four home appliances used that work on electricity. [2]
Ans. (1) Fan [1/2]
(2) Refrigerator [1/2]
(3) Iron [1/2]
(4) Washing Machine [1/2]
15. Why are conductors and Insulators both important for us? [2]
Ans. The conductors and Insulators both play an important role in our lives. Switches, Electric Plugs and
sockets are made up of conductors. [1]
On the other hand, rubber and plastics are used for covering wires, plug tops, switches and other parts of
electrical appliances. [1]

16. What is filament? [2]

Ans. A piece of tungsten wire inside the bulb which glows when electric current passes through it, is called
filament. [2]
SECTION C

17. What happens when electric current is passed through an electric bulb? [3]
Ans. (1) The current flows from the positive to the negative terminal [1]
(2) The terminals of the bulb are connected with that of cell by wires. [1]
(3)The current passes through the filament that makes the bulb glow. [1]

2
18. What happens when the switch is turned to the [3]
(a) ‘On’ position (b) ‘Off’ position
Ans. (a) In ‘On’ position, the electric circuit is complete and current is allowed to flow through the
circuit. [11/2]
(b) In ‘Off’ position, the circuit is incomplete, no current flows in the circuit. [11/2]
19. What is a solar cell? List its three uses. [3]
Ans. The cell which converts sunlight to electrical energy is called solar cell. [11/2]
It is used in –
(1) Watches [1/2]
(2) Calculators [1/2]
(3) Satellites [1/2]
20. What do you understand by the term ‘ fused bulb’? [3]
Ans. When the filament of the bulb is broken, the path of the current between the terminals of electric cell will
break. [1]
Hence no current flows in the electric circuit and bulb does not glow. [1]
Such a bulb is called referred to as a fused bulb in a common layman’s language. [1]
SECTION D

21. Describe the structure of a bulb [5]

Ans. A Bulb consists following parts –
(1) Metal casing have grooves in the lower part. [1]
(2) A small spiral or thin wire, called filament. [1]
(3) Two slightly thicker wires. These wire support the filament. [1]
(4) One of two wires is connected to metal casing. [1]
(5) The metal casing and the metal tip are fixed in such a way that they don’t touch each other. [1]
22. What preventive measures should be followed in order to avoid an electric shock? [5]
Ans. We should follow the following preventive measures –
(1) Replace the bulb only when it is switched off and is cool. [1]
(2) Never touch electrical switches or gadgets when the body is wet. [1]
(3) Never touch the electric wire with bare hands. [1]
(4) Never fly kites near overhead power lines. [1]
(5) Don’t touch electric poles and transformers. [1]
23. Explain the structure of dry cell with the help of a suitable diagram. [5]
Ans. Dry Cell – The dry cell contains a paste of ammonium chloride inside a zinc container. Inside the paste a
cardboard container containing powdered manganese dioxide and carbon is placed. It has microscopic
holes in it. [1]
A rod usually of carbon with a metal cap is dipped into the manganese dioxide. The whole thing is then
sealed, so that the contents do not spill out side. [1]
This tip of the metal cap is called the positive terminal and the base of the zinc can is called the negative
terminal of the dry cell. [1]

3
[2]
24. Draw the inside view of electric torch and mention the principle on which an electric torch works.

[5]

[3]
Ans. Principle of an electric torch –
An electric torch has one or more dry cells inside it, which act as the source of energy. These cells are
connected through a switch to a small bulb. [1]
When the switch is pushed to the ‘On’ position, the circuit is complete and the bulb glows. When the
switch is pushed to off position the circuit is incomplete and the light goes out. [1]
