refr.html#c2

1. What is refraction of light?

Refraction is the bending of a wave when it enters a medium
where its speed is different.

2. What determines the degree at which light is bent?

The way the light bends when it goes through a medium.

3. Why do you think light travels slower in water than it does in air? (think in terms of
medium)
It travels slower because water is denser than air.

4. What determines the amount of bending of the light?

Refractive index

5. Index of refraction is represented by what letter?

The letter n

6. How is ‘n’ calculated?

N = c/v or n= sini / sinr

7. What is the refractive index of:

a. Air – 1.0003
b. Ethyl Alcohol – 1.3614
c. A Diamond – 2.42

8. What law is used to determine the angle of refraction?

Snell’s law is used to determine the angle of refraction.
Calculating Using Snell’s Law

Example of calculating using Snell’s Law.

Snell’s Law Practice

1. Use Snell’ Law to determine the ‘angle of
refraction’ (θ2 on the diagram) for the
example to the right.
(n1sinθ1 = n2sinθ2)
1 x sin22 = 1.44 x sinθ2
0.375 = 1.44 x sinθ2
0.375/1.44 = sinθ2
0.2601 = sinθ2
Sin ^-1 x 0.2601 = θ2
Angle of refraction = 15 o

2. Light traveling through an optical fiber (n=1.44) reaches the end of the fiber and exits
into air. (a) If the angle of incidence on the end of the fiber is 30 o, what is the angle of
refraction outside the fiber? (n1sinθ1 = n2sinθ2)
1.44 x sin30 = 1 x sinθ2
