Explain the following statements:
1. Self is a product of enculturation.

The term enculturation is the process by which an individual learns and

internalizes the norms, values, and practices of their culture. For example, if
an individual was born in an Igorot community, that person learns the
environment’s cultural values, norms, and practices at a young age and
continuously throughout life since enculturation is a gradual learning process.

There are various factors that contribute to enculturation. These include family
members, friends, educational systems of a certain community, and media.
These help oneself understand the context of their culture and progressively
develop appropriate behaviors and attitudes.

In addition, enculturation is also a form of socialization where oneself gains

the knowledge and skills to function within the context of their culture, which
includes language and behaviors.

2. Self is a contemporary culture.

It has been discussed that the self is perceived as dynamic and evolving,
which means that the self is continuously developing since it is influenced by
external factors such as society and individual experiences. A person’s view of
themselves is impacted by what they experience. As they encounter situations
and challenges, the concept of themselves can shift.

Social interactions also shape the self. Through studies, self-concept is

learned and organized based on experience. This means that as an individual
engages with various social groups, their self-perception can evolve
accordingly.

For example, an individual faced with an experience that contradict their

understanding, that individual may either adapt their self-concept to
accommodate theses experience or not.

3. Why self-awareness and awareness of behavioral environment important in

acquiring appropriate contemporary culture?

Self-awareness enables us to recognize our good qualities, values, feelings,

practices, strengths, and weaknesses. We can see how our actions impact
other individuals. This plays an important role in personal development, social
interactions, and cultural integration. Having self-awareness is significant to
each individual since building healthy connections in a variety of cultural
contexts requires self-aware people to be able to see how their actions affect
other people and adjust accordingly.

Understanding one's social and cultural environment is necessary to be aware

of one's behavioral environment. In a growing global society, this knowledge
can be helpful for understanding various cultural norms and expectations.

For example, if an individual joins in with a team with various cultural

backgrounds, having self-awareness, he/she can build strong connections
with the team because he/she is willing to learn and adapt to various cultures,
which can potentially lead their team to grow.
