ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT LESSONS FROM MY EXPERIENCE WITH SARAH WAS THE IMPORTANCE
OF ACTIVE LISTENING IN SERVANT LEADERSHIP. INITIALLY, I APPROACHED OUR INTERACTIONS WITH A
DESIRE TO OFFER SOLUTIONS, BUT I QUICKLY REALIZED THAT I NEEDED TO LISTEN TO SARAH’S
EXPERIENCES AND CHALLENGES FIRST. BY GIVING HER THE SPACE TO EXPRESS HER THOUGHTS AND
FEELINGS, I LEARNED ABOUT THE SPECIFIC BARRIERS SHE FACED IN ACCESSING EDUCATIONAL
RESOURCES. THIS TAUGHT ME THAT A SERVANT LEADER MUST PRIORITIZE UNDERSTANDING THE NEEDS
OF OTHERS BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO PROVIDE SUPPORT. LISTENING ATTENTIVELY NOT ONLY FOSTERS
TRUST BUT ALSO ENSURES THAT THE ASSISTANCE PROVIDED IS RELEVANT AND EFFECTIVE.
THE FINAL LESSON I GLEANED FROM MY INTERACTIONS WITH SARAH REVOLVED AROUND
COLLABORATION AND EMPOWERMENT. AFTER I ASSISTED HER IN ACCESSING EDUCATIONAL
RESOURCES, I ENCOURAGED SARAH TO TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE IN HER LEARNING JOURNEY. I INVITED HER
TO SHARE HER INSIGHTS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT, WHICH NOT ONLY HELPED HER FEEL
VALUED BUT ALSO EMPOWERED HER TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF HER SITUATION. THIS EXPERIENCE
UNDERSCORED THE IDEA THAT TRUE SERVANT LEADERSHIP INVOLVES FOSTERING A COLLABORATIVE
ENVIRONMENT WHERE INDIVIDUALS FEEL EMPOWERED TO CONTRIBUTE. BY WORKING TOGETHER, WE
CAN CREATE SOLUTIONS THAT ARE MORE EFFECTIVE AND MEANINGFUL.
