REFLECTING ON MY VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE AT A LOCAL COMMUNITY CENTER THAT PROVIDES

RESOURCES FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES, I ENCOUNTERED A PROFOUND LESSON IN SERVANT

LEADERSHIP. DURING MY TIME THERE, I WORKED CLOSELY WITH A YOUNG WOMAN NAMED SARAH,
WHO HAS CEREBRAL PALSY AND FACED NUMEROUS BARRIERS IN ACCESSING EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS
AND SOCIAL SERVICES. THIS INTERACTION NOT ONLY DEEPENED MY UNDERSTANDING OF THE
CHALLENGES FACED BY INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES BUT ALSO HIGHLIGHTED THE IMPORTANCE OF
EMPATHY, ADVOCACY, AND ACTIVE LISTENING IN FOSTERING AN INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT. THE
PRIMARY LESSON I LEARNED FROM THIS EXPERIENCE IS THAT PRACTICING SERVANT LEADERSHIP
INVOLVES PRIORITIZING THE NEEDS OF OTHERS, ADVOCATING FOR THEIR ACCESS TO RESOURCES, AND
EMPOWERING THEM TO NAVIGATE THE SYSTEMS THAT SERVE THEM.

**BODY PARAGRAPH 1: UNDERSTANDING NEEDS THROUGH ACTIVE LISTENING**

ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT LESSONS FROM MY EXPERIENCE WITH SARAH WAS THE IMPORTANCE
OF ACTIVE LISTENING IN SERVANT LEADERSHIP. INITIALLY, I APPROACHED OUR INTERACTIONS WITH A
DESIRE TO OFFER SOLUTIONS, BUT I QUICKLY REALIZED THAT I NEEDED TO LISTEN TO SARAH’S
EXPERIENCES AND CHALLENGES FIRST. BY GIVING HER THE SPACE TO EXPRESS HER THOUGHTS AND
FEELINGS, I LEARNED ABOUT THE SPECIFIC BARRIERS SHE FACED IN ACCESSING EDUCATIONAL
RESOURCES. THIS TAUGHT ME THAT A SERVANT LEADER MUST PRIORITIZE UNDERSTANDING THE NEEDS
OF OTHERS BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO PROVIDE SUPPORT. LISTENING ATTENTIVELY NOT ONLY FOSTERS
TRUST BUT ALSO ENSURES THAT THE ASSISTANCE PROVIDED IS RELEVANT AND EFFECTIVE.

**BODY PARAGRAPH 2: ADVOCATING FOR ACCESSIBLE RESOURCES**

ANOTHER CRITICAL ASPECT OF PRACTICING SERVANT LEADERSHIP THAT I LEARNED THROUGH MY

EXPERIENCE WAS THE IMPORTANCE OF ADVOCACY. AFTER UNDERSTANDING SARAH'S NEEDS, I SOUGHT
TO CONNECT HER WITH ACCESSIBLE EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS AND SERVICES. THIS INVOLVED
NAVIGATING VARIOUS ORGANIZATIONS AND ADVOCATING FOR HER ON MULTIPLE FRONTS. I REALIZED
THAT SERVANT LEADERSHIP IS NOT JUST ABOUT OFFERING HELP; IT IS ABOUT EMPOWERING
INDIVIDUALS BY REMOVING BARRIERS THAT PREVENT THEM FROM ACCESSING THE RESOURCES THEY
NEED. BY ADVOCATING FOR SARAH, I LEARNED THE VALUE OF USING ONE’S VOICE TO AMPLIFY THE
NEEDS OF OTHERS, ENSURING THEY RECEIVE THE SUPPORT NECESSARY TO THRIVE.

**BODY PARAGRAPH 3: EMPOWERING OTHERS THROUGH COLLABORATION**

THE FINAL LESSON I GLEANED FROM MY INTERACTIONS WITH SARAH REVOLVED AROUND
COLLABORATION AND EMPOWERMENT. AFTER I ASSISTED HER IN ACCESSING EDUCATIONAL
RESOURCES, I ENCOURAGED SARAH TO TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE IN HER LEARNING JOURNEY. I INVITED HER
TO SHARE HER INSIGHTS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT, WHICH NOT ONLY HELPED HER FEEL
VALUED BUT ALSO EMPOWERED HER TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF HER SITUATION. THIS EXPERIENCE
UNDERSCORED THE IDEA THAT TRUE SERVANT LEADERSHIP INVOLVES FOSTERING A COLLABORATIVE
ENVIRONMENT WHERE INDIVIDUALS FEEL EMPOWERED TO CONTRIBUTE. BY WORKING TOGETHER, WE
CAN CREATE SOLUTIONS THAT ARE MORE EFFECTIVE AND MEANINGFUL.
**CONCLUSION:**

IN REFLECTING ON MY EXPERIENCE WITH SARAH AT THE COMMUNITY CENTER, I RECOGNIZE THAT

PRACTICING SERVANT LEADERSHIP IN INTERACTIONS WITH INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES INVOLVES
ACTIVE LISTENING, ADVOCACY, AND EMPOWERMENT. THE LESSONS LEARNED FROM THIS EXPERIENCE
HAVE NOT ONLY SHAPED MY UNDERSTANDING OF SERVANT LEADERSHIP BUT ALSO HIGHLIGHTED THE
IMPORTANCE OF FOSTERING AN INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES. AS I
LOOK TO THE FUTURE, I SEE NUMEROUS OPPORTUNITIES TO APPLY THESE LESSONS IN VARIOUS
CONTEXTS, FROM COMMUNITY SERVICE TO PROFESSIONAL SETTINGS. EMBRACING THE PRINCIPLES OF
SERVANT LEADERSHIP WILL ALLOW ME TO SUPPORT INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES MORE
EFFECTIVELY, ENSURING THEY HAVE ACCESS TO THE QUALITY RESOURCES AND SERVICES THEY DESERVE.
