Assignment Theory of Machines – 21ME42

MODULE 1
1. A pin jointed 4 bar mechanism is shown in Figure. Link AB = 150 mm, BC = 180 mm, CD
= 180 mm, AD = 300 mm. Link AB makes 600 with link AD and rotates at 100 rpm.
Locate all the instantaneous centers and find the angular velocity of link BC and linear
velocity of point C.

2. In a slider crank mechanism shown in figure, the crank OA = 300 mm and connecting
rod AB = 1200 mm. The crank OA is turned 300 from inner dead center. Locate all the
instantaneous centres. If the crank rotates at 15 rad/sec clockwise, find, (i) Velocity of
Slider B and (ii) Angular Velocity of Connecting Rod AB.

MODULE 2
3. Derive an expression for the length of the path of contact.

4. An epicyclic gear consists of three gears A, B and C as shown in Fig. The gear A has 72
internal teeth and gear C has 32 external teeth. The gear B meshes with both A and C
and is carried on an arm EF which rotates about the centre of A at 18 r.p.m. If the gear
A is fixed, determine the speed of gears B and C.
MODULE 3
5. Draw the profile of a cam operating a roller reciprocating follower and with the
following data:
a. Minimum radius of cam = 25 mm
b. Lift = 30 mm
c. Roller diameter = 15 mm
The cam lifts the follower for 120° with SHM followed by a dwell period of 30°. Then
the follower lowers down during 150° of the cam rotation with uniform acceleration
and deceleration followed by a dwell period If the cam rotates at a uniform speed of
150 rpm, calculate the maximum velocity and acceleration of the follower during the
descent period.

MODULE 4
6. An aeroplane flying at 240km/h turns towards the left and completes a quarter circle
of 60m radius. The mass of the rotary engine and the propeller of the plane is 450 kg
with a radius of gyration of 320 mm. The engine speed is 2000 rpm clockwise when
viewed from the rear. Determine the gyroscopic couple on the aircraft and state its
effect.
In what way is the effect changed when the:
a. aeroplane turns towards right
b. engine rotates clockwise when viewed from the front (nose end) and the
aeroplane turns (a) left (b) right?

7. The rotor of the turbine of a ship has a mass of 2500 kg and rotates at a speed of 3200
rpm counterclockwise when viewed from stern. The rotor has radius of gyration of 0.4
m. Determine the gyroscopic couple and its effect when:
a. the ship steers to the left in a curve of 80m radius at a speed of 15 knots (1
knot = 1860 m/h)
b. the ship pitches 5 degrees above and 5 degrees below the normal position and
the bow is descending with its maximum velocity - the pitching motion is
simple harmonic with a periodic time of 40 seconds.

8. List types of vibrations.

MODULE 5
9. An electric motor is supported on a spring and a dashpot. The spring has the stiffness
of 6400 N/m and the dashpot offers a resistance of 500 N at 4 m/s. The unbalanced
mass 0.5 kg rotates at 5cm radius, and the total mass of vibratory system is 20 kg. The
motor runs at 400 rpm. Determine:
a. Damping factor
b. Amplitude of vibration and phase angle
c. Resonant speed and resonant amplitude
d. Forces exerted by the spring and the dashpot on the motor
10. Sketch and explanation of vibrometer and accelerometer
