Topic: Politicians should take more responsibility for preventing and solving global environmental

problems, because individuals can do very little.

Do you agree or disagree?

Some individuals are of the opinion that preventing and addressing alarming environmental
issues across the globe should be primarily the responsibility of authorities on the grounds that
residents can make little contribution to these activities. My personal opinion expresses a
complete disagreement with this notion due to some reasons that are elucidated in this essay.
On the one hand, some proponents of this suggestion would argue that politicians hold
significant power and resources for guiding citizens towards effective environmental practices .
One of the major reasons behind the emergence of these ecological problems might stem from
individuals’ ways of living and their lack of awareness about sustainable actions. Therefore,
governments can leverage their authority to educate the public and incentivize behavioral
changes by imposing appropriate laws against actions that damage the environment.

On the other hand, there are some compelling rationales as to why individuals also play an
important role in mitigating environment-related issues. It is undeniable that these issues appear
to be exceptionally sophisticated and have adverse impacts on various aspects of humans’ lives.
As a result, addressing environmental problems optimally might necessitate a large amount of
collaboration and mutual agreements among people of different nations instead of exclusively
relying on authorities. This can be exemplified in addressing global warming, which has
witnessed a large portion of citizens’ contributions in planting more trees or replacing
conventional panels by renewable/energy-efficient ones, ultimately leading to a greener space
and reduced air pollution in Vietnam for the past few years. Therefore, each person can join
hands to prevent environmental implications.
In conclusion, I am strongly against this notion that the mitigating worldwide ecological issues
could be achieve optimally by the superior contribution of authorities as individuals can
contribute at a small scale. While government involvement is crucial, individual contributions
are equally important. A comprehensive approach involving cooperation and mutual
understanding between citizens and the government is essential for tackling these complex
challenges effectively.
 The responsibility falls upon something/someone: trách nhiệm đổ lên đầu ai hoặc cái gì đó
 Impose new laws against something: ban hành luật chống lại việc gì đó
-> issue an official ban on all companies from using plastic packaging
 Responsibility = obligation
 Develop a green movement
 Reduce the reliance/dependence on fossil fuels
 An ecological crisis -> threaten our existence

 It is true that some environmental issues are too big for individuals to deal with.
In order for serious problems, such as global warming, prolonged droughts,
violent storms or other extreme weather events, to be effectively addressed, it
requires the efforts and cooperation of politicians and large environmental
organisations. This is because solving such problems requires special
equipment, the use/utilization of modern technological devices and large
numbers of experienced scientists to work together. For instance, it takes years
for researchers to collect various samples and analyse huge amounts of data in
order to know the major causes of global warming, and to help them to find the
most effective solutions to tackle this problem. Only governments can have
sufficient funds and resources to invest in this.
 However, I believe that individuals also need to take responsibility for
environmental protection. As individuals, we can help in various ways, such as
recycling more, buying more energy-efficient household items or planting more
trees in our gardens. I think that without the cooperation of both politicians and
individuals, environmental issues will never be effectively tackled. For example, if
farmers continue to burn forests for their own purposes, regardless of the
government’s regulations, the problem of climate change will never be
successfully mitigated.
