PREFACE
"...

This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand
Committee CH/3, Paints and Related Materials, to supersede AS 1580.403.1-1981.

METHOD

1 SCOPE This Standard sets out a procedure for determining the scratch resistance of
a dry paint film.

2 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS The following documents are referred to in this

Standard:
AS/NZS
1580 Paints and related materials
1580.101.1 Method 101.1: Conditions of test-Temperature, humidity and airflow
control
1580.101.3 Method 101.3: Standard procedures for stoving
1580.101.4' Method 101.4: Conditions of test- Temperature control
1580.101.5 Method 101.5: Conditions of test- Temperature and humidity control

3 APP ARA TUS The apparatus consists essentially of a horizontal sliding panel to
which the test panel can be clamped and which can be moved, either manually or,
alternatively, by means of a motor drive, at a rate of 30 to 40 mm/s, beneath the point of
a scratching needle, the axis of which is normal to the surface of the test panel.
The needle shall have a tungsten-carbide hemispherical point of I :to.05 mm in diameter.
It shall be fixed in a holder at the end of a counterpoised arm, which shall be provided
with means by which a load can be applied to the needle.
A ramp sloping at approximately 12°, fixed to the sliding panel and a stop on the
counterpoised arm shall be so arranged that the needle is held off the test film at the
commencement of the stroke of the sliding panel and is gradually lowered on to it as the
stroke proceeds. The length of the stroke shall be such that a scratch not less than 60 mm
long can be obtained.
The apparatus may be equipped with an electrical means for indicating when the needle
has penetrated through the film to the underlying metal test panel. '

NOTES:

I Electrical indications of 'scratch through' can only be used when the test film does not
contain conductive pigment such "as powdered metal or when the test panel is made of
If metal.
2 Needles should be checked frequently for cleanliness and signs of wear or damage. The
needle should be examined under a I1ilicroscope.
I

4 TEST PANEL The test panel shall be made .from an appropriate base material, not. ,
smaller than 100 mm x 50 mm, and of dimensions appropriate to the apparatus.
..
5 PREPARATION OF PANELS If required, pretreat the test panel by the appropriate
method.

Coat the panels at the prescribed film thickness by the appropriate method and cure under
conditions specified in AS/NZS 1580.101.1, AS 1580.101.3 or AS/NZS 1580.101.5, as
appropriate.
6 TEST CONDITIONS The test shall be performed under conditions specified in
AS/NZS 1580.101.4 or AS/NZS 1580.10.15, as appropriate.

7 PROCEDURE The procedure shall be as follows:

(a) Clamp the test panel, film side uppermost, to the sliding panel of the apparatus.
(b) Adjust the length of the needle projecting from the holder so that when the point of.
the needle is resting on the test film, the counterpoised arm is horizontal, i.e. the
axis of the needle is normal to the surface of the test film.
(c) Return the sliding panel to the 'start' position and lower the stop on the arm onto
the ramp.
(d) Adjust the load on the needle to an appropriate value.
(e) Move the sliding panel at a rate of 30 to 40 mm/s.
(f) Raise the needle and determine by visual examination whether the scratch has
penetrated through the film to the underlying metal or other specified substrate.
Ignore the initial 10 mm and the final 10 mm of the path traversed by the needle.
NOTES:
I In cases of doubt, e.g. when testing metal-filed paint, it may be necessary to examine the
scratch with the aid of a hand lens.
2 In appropriate cases this step may be replaced by an electrical determination of 'scratch
through' .
(g) Relocate the panel so that each consecutive scratch is situated on a fresh portion of
the panel and repeat Steps (c) to (f) but with lower or higher loads in steps of
100 g, according to whether' scratch through' has or has not occurred until in two
consecutive scratches one does and the other does not penetrate through the film to
the metal or other specified substrate.
(h) Record the maximum load, in grams, that the film will withstand without 'scratch
through'. If no 'scratch through' is obtained with a load of 2100 g, report the
scratch resistance of the film as 'greater than 2000 g'.
NOTE: When checking the material for compliance with a particular specification, test the film
only at the value prescribed in the specification and report whether the material passes or fails
the test.

8 REPORT The report shall contain the following information:

(a) Name of testing authority. ..
(b) Date of test and report number.
(c) Identification of material and thickness of coating under test.
(d) Test conditions. r
(e) The scratch resistance of the film, in grams, or pass/fail, as appropriate, when
testing for compliance with a specification.
(f) Reference to this method, i.e. AS/NZS 1580.403.1.
(g) Any deviations from this test method.
