I. Curriculum Content, Standards, and Lesson Competencies

A. Content Standard: Demonstrates understanding of key concepts of algebraic expressions,
the properties of real numbers as applied in linear equations, and
inequalities in one variable.
B. Performance Standard: The learners are able to model situations using oral, written, graphical,
and algebraic methods in solving problems involving algebraic
expressions, linear equations, and inequalities in one variable.
C. Learning Competencies: Evaluates algebraic expressions for given values of the variables.
(M7AL-llc4)
Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the learners can:
a. identify the steps in evaluating algebraic expression;
b. solve word problem that involves evaluating an algebraic
expression; and
c. demonstrate an understanding of the importance of learning to
evaluate algebraic expressions.

D. Content
Topic: Algebraic Expression
Sub-topic: Evaluating Algebraic Expression
E. Integration Problem-solving Skills, Computational Skills, and Critical Thinking Skills
II. Learning Resources Laptop, Presentation Slides, LCD Monitor/projector, Flashcards
III. Teaching and Learning Procedure
A. Activating Prior Knowledge The teacher will show three flashcards that contain different expressions
Short Review: with missing values, if the blank corresponds to 5, and answer the
expression.
1. (15-_) (8)
2. (10+2) (_)
3. (7+3) (-_)
Answer Key:
1. 80
2. 60
3. -50
Guide Questions:
”What rule did you need to consider in solving these different
expressions? Why?”
Expected Answer:
It’s PEMDAS. Since it’s a multi-operation mathematical expression,
the order of the expression could affect the answer, so we need to
follow the rule of PEMDAS which stands for Parenthesis, Exponent,
Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction.
B. Establishing Lesson I. The teacher will show three pictures.
Purpose Guide Questions:
“What did you observe?”
Expected answer:
Each picture has its missing parts. In the first picture, the heart
has a missing piece. In the second picture, the man has no right
arm. Lastly, which is the table is lacking with one leg.

Follow-up question:
“Does the missing parts matter?”
Expected answer:
Yes, since each part has its purpose, and we can’t clearly
understand the whole picture its function won’t be executed
properly if there’s a part that is missing.

II. The teacher will let the learners read the learning objective.
Learning Objectives:
a. Identify the steps in evaluating algebraic expression;
b. solve a word problem that involves evaluating an algebraic
expression; and
c. demonstrate an understanding of the importance of
learning to evaluate algebraic expressions.

C. Developing and Deepening Understanding

1. Explicitation: How to evaluate algebraic expression? The learners will identify the steps
in evaluating algebraic expression.
To evaluate algebraic expressions, we represent any value of variables
until we determine the number of values it represents. We simply follow
these three steps in evaluating an algebraic expression.
 First, represent variables with numbers.
Ex. 2x + 2 such that x = 2
 Next, replace each variable with the given or set number.
Ex. 2(2) + 2
 Lastly, operated by following the order of operations. An acronym
PEMDAS with the given meaning below should be followed,
P – Parenthesis
E – Exponent
M – Multiply (in order of occurrence)
D – Division (in order of occurrence)
A – Add (in order of occurrence)
S – subtract (in order of occurrence)
Ex. 2(2) + 2 = 6

2. Worked Example: Evaluate the following algebraic expressions on the board.

Let x=2, y=3, and z= -2
1. X2
2. (x-y)2
3. (z/x)
4. 4x2 – 1
5. (5y-1) (x)

Answer Key:
1. 4
2. 1
3. -1
4. 15
5. 28
3. Lesson Activity: Learners will solve the problem solving using the concept of evaluating an
algebraic expression.

Problem 1: If x is 2 for oranges and y is 4 for lemon, you buy three oranges
and two lemons. How much did you spend on your groceries? Write an
algebraic expression to represent the total cost

Problem 2: Samantha is planning a party and needs to buy balloons. Each

balloon cost 2 pesos. She also plans to buy a party hat that costs 4 pesos.
Write an algebraic expression to represent the total cost if Samantha buys
7 balloons. Then, calculate the total cost.

Problem 3: You are planning a party and need to budget for snacks and
drinks. The cost of snacks is 15 pesos per person, and the cost of drinks is
10 per person. You expect 10 people to attend. You want to find out the
total cost for snacks and drinks. Write an algebraic expression to
represent the total cost

Answer key:

Problem 1
X = price of orange
Y = price of lemon
C = total cost

C = 3x + 2y, x = 2 & y = 4
C = 3(2) + 2 (4)
C=6+8
C= 14
The total cost is 14 pesos.

Problem 2:
b = number of balloons
C = total cost

C = 2b + 4, b = 7
C = 2(7) + 4
C = 14+4
C = 18
If Samantha buys 7 balloons, the total cost
will 18 pesos

Problem 3
N= number of attendees
C= total cost

C= (15×n) + (10×n)
C= (15×10) + (10×10)
C= (150) +( 100)
C= 250
The total cost for snacks and drinks for your party with 10 attendees will
be 250 pesos.
