1. Read This First
This part of the manual explains the structure and use of this AutoStore document. Reading the following
chapters in detail will help you to get the most out of your AutoStore system.
This Operation Manual describes an AutoStore software component. Depending on the application it will
provide instructions for:
▪ using the software for running an AutoStore system
▪ fixing errors during operation
▪ adjusting safety features of the AutoStore system
▪ adding and removing modules
This Operation Manual is intended for Category 3 users, i.e. the distributors' service personnel. This manual
should be kept in close proximity during operation for quick reference.
This section describes the typographical conventions that have been established for AutoStore manuals.
Data Input
Throughout this manual, the following conventions indicate data input and output via the computer:
▪ Messages displayed on the screen are represented by capitalizing the initial letter of each word and by
italicizing each word. For example, "Close The Robot Door".
▪ Statuses and modes are written in capital letters. For example, RUNNING.
▪ Input that is entered by keyboard is identified by quotation marks: single quotes for single characters,
double quotes for strings.
▪ For brevity, expressions such as “choose File -> Directories” are used rather than “pull down the File menu
and choose Directories.”
▪ Any command is enclosed in angle brackets < > represents a single keystroke. For example, “press <F1>”
means press the key labeled F1.
▪ Any command that requires pressing two or more keys simultaneously is shown with a plus sign connecting
the keys. For example, “press <Shift> + <F1>” means press and hold the <Shift> key and then press the
<F1> key.
▪ Any button that you click on the screen or on a physical panel is represented in bold face letters. For
example, click "Close" or push "Retry".
Measurements
Unless specified otherwise:
▪ All measurements are metric
▪ Diagrams are read from left to right
We strongly recommend that you read the entire manual. In order to minimize the chance of injury or death,
you must read all the WARNING and CAUTION signs in the manual.
You will find various WARNING, CAUTION, and NOTICE signs in this manual. These WARNING signs were
prepared to enhance your personal safety. You should carefully read and follow ALL procedures and
recommendations provided through these WARNING, CAUTION, and NOTICE signs.
WARNING
A WARNING indicates a situation that could result in harm, serious bodily injury, or death if the warning is
ignored.
CAUTION
A CAUTION indicates a situation that could result in damage to the module if the caution is ignored.
NOTICE
A NOTICE indicates that interesting or helpful information is being provided.

The AutoStore Hardware Configuration Tool (short: Hardware Config) is an application for the distributor.
It allows the distributor to:
▪ View and configure module settings
▪ View and update the firmware of a module
Keyword Definition
Module / device A hardware module in an AutoStore installation, e.g. a Carousel Port, an AutoStore
Access Point, or a Robot.
The table below shows all the AutoStore modules that Hardare Config supports.
Arm 1 NO YES
Arm 2 NO YES
The version number of the installed Hardware Config application is shown next to the AutoStore logo in the
top-right corner of the startup screen.
Hardware Config starts with an overview window that displays two connection buttons. Each button connects
to a different type of connection:
▪ Network Connection
▪ Serial Connection (USB/RS-232)
Conveyor Network
The computer and the module must be connected to the same network with a network cable.
In order to connect a module via network cable:
1. Set the computer’s local network IP-address to 192.168.0.253
If this IP-address is not available, the first line is marked bold and the connect button is grayed out.
See Appendix A (on page 28) to this manual for instructions on how to assign static IP-addresses under
Windows.
2. If Hardware Config finds a network with the correct IP-address the user is prompted to connect the module.
NOTICE
Even though Hardware Config connects as long as there is any network with IP 192.168.0.253 it will
only work correctly if that is the local IP-address of the computer!
NOTICE
If your computer does not support Auto-MDX you must use a crossed network cable!
4. Click Connect
See Appendix B (on page 31) to this manual for instructions on how to manually give Hardware Config full
public access to internet.
5. Boot or reboot the module
See the chapter Module (re)booting (see How to Reboot each Module on page 16) for instructions on how
to boot modules.

Some modules accept new connections only for a few seconds after rebooting:
1. Click connect
2. Reboot the target module

When a module is successfully connected, a new screen is shown. This screen consists of:
▪ A top bar with the module name
▪ A side bar with the device properties
▪ A content view with a firmware update section and log information
▪ Click the button labeled Detailed for a detailed view of the Dataflow category.
▪ Click the button labeled Normal to return to the simple view.

Hardware Config and the target module. Useful
for debugging and testing.
Before you start the update process make sure to ascertain which firmware version is installed on the module.
To see the current version number:
▪ Unfold the Version Info drawer under Device Properties.
1. See chapter Supported Modules for a list of modules that can be updated.
2. Choose which Sub Module you want to update
3. See chapter Accepted and Expected Firmware (see Accepted and Required Firmware on page 22) to
choose the correct firmware file(s) to select.
i. Expected firmware is firmware that is expected by the target module and that maintains the target
module type.
ii. Accepted firmware is firmware that is accepted by the target module but may change the target module
type.
4. Select firmware file(s):
▪ Click the browse/open button and select firmware file from the popup
▪ Drag and drop the file from the Windows file explorer to Hardware Config.
NOTICE
Hardware Config will show an error message if you choose a incompatible file. See the chapter File
Errors and Warnings (on page 23). If no warning or error is revealed, the selected firmware is safe to
upload to the target module.
Hardware Config shows the following information for the selected file:
▪ Name: the name of the update file
▪ Device ID: the ID of module that the firmware is made for
▪ Version: the version of the module that the firmware is made for
NOTICE
ASAP 2.4GHz and Robot Link require two firmware files at once because the main MCU and RF Link
have to be programmed simultaneously. The user must upload files to both of them in order to update
the target module.
5. Click Update
You will see at least one Update button. Click the Update button for the sub module that you want to
update.
NOTICE
If you update arms, Hardware Config also asks what arms should be updated

Error/Warning
Explanation
Error: Invalid file The file is not readable and can’t be uploaded
to the module. This is normally caused by a
wrong path or an incorrectly formatted file. The
firmware file may be corrupted.
Warning: Device ID and version not recognized The file is readable and correctly formatted, but
the Device ID and version of the file are not
recognized. Hardware Config cannot guarantee
that the firmware file matches the target
module. This is normally caused by old
firmware. The user may still upload this file to
the target module at his own risk.
Warning: Mismatch between selected file and accepted file(s) The device ID of the file is not accepted (see
Accepted and Expected Firmware (see
Accepted and Required Firmware on page 22)).
Hardware Config prevents wrong files from
being uploaded to the target module.
Warning: Mismatch between selected file and expected file(s) The device ID from the file is accepted, but not
expected (see Accepted and Expected
Firmware (see Accepted and Required
Firmware on page 22)). It is safe to update, but
the device type of the module will change. In a
standard AutoStore installation this should be
avoided.
5.1.3 Troubleshooting
Problem Action
The version read from the module If the firmware was successfully updated on the module, the firmware
does not match the device ID from probably has a version problem which does not affect functionality. No
the newly uploaded file user action is necessary.
Timeout The update time exceeded the module’s timeout time. An error may have
occurred. Try to update again.
Error The module confirms that an error has occurred. Try to update again.

In order to enable ASHub to communicate with the Ports, the IP address of each Port needs to be updated:
1. Start the ASHub on the Controller PC.
2. Connect to a Port through HWConfig
4. Once the IP port has been updated, ASHub will show a connection to the AutoStore Port.
States Description

to the properties on the module, the Saved and
Discard buttons are disabled.
