a) Briefly explain the progress observed in the field of female education during the
colonial rule in India.
Ans - Female education received a great impetus through various reformed
samajas and societies such as the Brahmo Samaj, the Arya Samaj and Servants
of Indian Society, etc. The formation of the Hindu Balika Vidyalaya in Kolkata
in 1849 marked a turning point in the history of female education. Wood’s
Despatch of 1854 made a special reference to education of women and the
British Government assumed direct responsibility for making women literate.
The first Indian Women’s University was started in 1916 by Maharshi Karve. An
All-India Women’s Conference was founded in 1927. It did outstanding work
in promoting female education.

b) Why did Mahatma Gandhi strongly react against the western education in India?

Ans - Mahatma Gandhi believed that Indians began admiring the British rule and
considered Western civilisation superior. Indians educated in British institutions
began to treat their own culture as inferior. According to Mahatma Gandhi,
Western education only focused on reading and writing, and valued textbooks.
There was no scope for oral and practical knowledge. He argued that education
was not for knowing how to read and write but for the all-round development in
children

c) What were the goals of the British government in establishing English education in
India?
Ans - The British Government looked at modern education as the medium to
strengthen the foundations of their political power in India. The aim was to train
a section of Indians who would be able to assist the British in administration.
