Current Events Assignment

The world around us is changing each and every day and those developments can greatly affect
our lives. It is important for us to be aware of emerging global events to be effective AP students,
but more importantly, to be informed human beings.

You are responsible for completing five current event summaries due on the dates listed below.
You are restricted to information that deals with events of politics, government, economics,
serious social issues, education, science, etc. Generally speaking, articles focusing on sports,
entertainment, or other potentially light-hearted topics are discouraged for this assignment,
unless it is something you can imagine using as evidence in an essay. Before turning in your
work, we will share in a media meet and greet where we wander around the room sharing our
articles while smooth jazz plays softly in the background…it’s a good time.

Please follow the format below for your article/podcast summaries:

 Article Title – list the title at the top of the page.
 Summary – write a summary paragraph, in your own words, about the article. It should
be 7-10 sentences long depending on the length of the original text. Your summary
should cover the text’s primary points and should not include direct text or copying
verbatim.
 Significance – write at least another 4-5 sentences discussing why you chose the article
and its current relevance in today’s world. Think about who this event impacts and how.
What kind of issue is it? Is it an economic, social, or political issue? Explain why it is
significant or provide your opinion about the topic.
 Three Questions – include three relevant questions about the article. These should be
questions that you would like to see answered or questions that would help you further
understand the issue being addressed. The more specific the questions, the better.
 Reference – cite the article and include the following: Title, author, source, date
published. Please use MLA citation format. (12-point font, TNR)

The article you choose for each assignment should be current, meaning it should be
published no more than a month prior to the due date (if the due date is Sept. 6th, the article
should not have been published before Aug. 6th). The article you’re reporting on should be a
minimum of five paragraphs long (25-30 sentences).

Due Dates:

September 6th November 16th

September 30th December 12th
October 20th
