Introduction
• Permeable pavements, also known as
pervious or porous pavements, are
designed to allow water to pass through
them, reducing runoff and promoting
groundwater recharge. They are typically
made from materials like porous concrete,
open-pore pavers, or asphalt with an
underlying stone reservoir
OVERVIEW OF
PERMEABLE PAVEMENT

• Surface Layer (cover). This is the top

layer made of porous asphalt, pervious
concrete, or interlocking pavers.
• Gravel Base. The base is immediately
below the surface layer (cover).
• Sub-Base. The bottom layer allowing
water infiltration into the soil.
• Underdrains. These drainage lines are
located at or near the bottom of the sub-
base to collect water and convey it to
the storm sewer network.
Types of Permeable
Pavements

• Porous Asphalt
o Asphalt with reduced sand and fines to
allow water infiltration.

• Pervious Concrete
o Concrete with high porosity to enable
water passage.

• Permeable Interlocking Concrete

Pavers (PICP)
o Concrete units with gaps filled with
permeable aggregates.

Permeable pavement offers numerous
environmental and economic benefits,
making it an attractive solution for cities
and developers seeking to manage
stormwater runoff effectively. While there
are challenges associated with its
implementation, the benefits of
permeable pavement far outweigh the
costs. As the world continues to urbanize
CONCLUSION and grapple with the challenges of
climate change, permeable pavement is
poised to play a critical role in creating
more sustainable and resilient cities.
