Lesson Plan
Grade & Section: Graden 8 – Lark
Time: 3:15 pm – 4:00 pm
Grading period: Quarter 2

Content Standard: Understandanding relationship between faults and

earthquake.

Performance Standard: Make an emergency plan and prepare an

emergency kit for use at home and in school.

Learning Competencies: Demonstrate underwater earthquakes generate

tsunami.

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the discussion, the students should be able to:

1. Define the terms epicenter and focus of an earthquake;

2. Differentiate the epicenter from the focus of an earthquake; and,
3. Identify the importance of determining the location of the epicenter and
the focus.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Focus and Epicenter.

Reference: SCIENCE LINK (Worktext for Scientific and
Technology Literacy Book)
Materials: Visual Aids, Styrofoam, Manila Paper, Marker
III. PROCEDURES

A. Daily Activities

 Prayer
 Greetings
 Classroom Management
 Passing of Assignments

B. Review

 Why geologist focus their studies on the west valley fault?

 How Marikina's fault dangerous in the community?

C. Motivation:

 The teacher will show students an image of an

earthquake.
 They teacher will ask the students if what are possible
happening under the ground while the ground is shaking.

D. Lesson Proper

 Activity:

● the teacher will divide the class into 2 groups. Give them a map with
plotted seismic data and ask them to try to guess where the earthquake
likely started based on the data.
● They will give 5 minutes to discuss with their groupmates.

 Analysis

 What do you think is the difference between where

the earthquake starts and where we feel it?"
 How are we going to determined the location of an
earthquake?

 Abstraction

 Earthquake is the shaking of the ground caused

by rocks slipping past one another.
 In order for us to determine the location of an
earthquake by focus and the epicenter.

● FOCUS (Hypocenter) is the point origin of earthquake. The focus

of an earthquake is weakest point of an eartquake located inside
the earth's crust where seismic waves travel.

Types of earthquake according to Depth and Focus

Type of Earth Focal Depth from the Earth's Surface

1. Shallow- Focus less than < 70 km from the surface

2. Intermediate-Focus occur 70 - 30 km depth from the surface

3. Deep Focus morethan > 300km depth from the

surface

Note: Since the seismic waves or shallow-focus earthquakes

trabel faster from the focus to the surface due to short distance

between the focus and the surface, shallow-focus earthquakes

can more damage than deep focus earthquakes.

Note: In assessing the damage of an earthquake to its epicenter

provides an insights to the degree of it had caused.

● Focus is the origin of seismic waves and responsible for the

uccurence of the earthquake. While the epicenter is the visible

origin of the earthquakes .

● Seismometer - instrument used to record the motion of the ground

during an earthquake. They are installed in the ground throughout
the world abd operates as oastt of a seismographic method.
Detects and record the strenth and duration of vibrations. The
zigzag lines or the graph outputs in response to the ground
motions ate technically called seismograph.

Illustration: SEISMOMETER OLD AND MODERN

● CHENG HENG - a chinese astronomer and mathematician, he

invented the first seismograph "Eartquake Weatherrock" the first
name of seismograph.

● JOHN MILNE - invented the modern seismograph, an English

seismologist.

 Application " COMPARISON"

 The class will divide into 3 groups.

 Each group will make Venn diagram to
differentiate between the focus and the
epicenter.
 Ask students to fill in important points about
each based on the discussion.

CRITERIA

Content - 20 ponits
Structure - 15 points
Clarity - 15 points
Total - 50 points

IV. Evaluation

Test I.

Directions: In a ½ Crosswise, choose the best answer write on the

space provided.

Intensity TSUNAMI meaning harbor meaning waves

Cheng Heng Epicenter Seismometer epicentrum
Focus Magnitude John Milne seismic waves

_________1. A chinese astronomer and mathematician, he first

invented the seismograph.
_________2. Instrument used to record the motion of the ground
during earthquake.
_________3. the point on the surface of the earth directly above
the focus.
_________4. sometimes called the hypocenter.
_________5. Invented the modern seismograph.

Test II. Enumeration

6-10 Enumerate the type of focus.

V. Assignment

In a whole sheet of paper research and write a short report on how

scientists locate the epicenter of an earthquake using seismic data from
multiple stations.
