TItle: Patient Safety and Quality Improvement: Developing a Systems View (Patient
Safety 1)

Overview of the Course:


Safety is serve as a freedom from conditions that can cause death, injury, illness,
damage to or loss of equipment or property, or damage to environment. Every choice to make,
every technology to utilize, and every surgery to conduct should put the patient's well-being first
and foremost. This includes assessing possible dangers, instituting safety standards, and
advocating for patients as needed.

Course Objectives:
This session ought to discuss the history of patient safety and quality improvement in
healthcare. Furthermore, by identifying the breadth of the problem of avoidable damage in
healthcare, looking back at the work that has been done to far to better define, assess, and
improve preventable harm. Also, by the end of this module, it will help to identify at least four
key events in the history of patient safety and quality improvement, describe the key
characteristics of each of the three landmark patient safety publications, and summarize the
impact of preventable harm on patients, communities, and society.

Learning from the course:


Patient safety and quality improvement are concerned with safeguarding and improving
the well-being of those receiving medical care. We can improve patients' chances of recovering
and enjoying healthy lives by reducing mistakes, controlling infections, and assuring effective
therapies. With regards to this, I have learned the history of patient safety and quality
improvement in healthcare and how I can relate them to the practices in the modern world.
Furthermore, identifying damages are also crucially discussed hence I was able to enhance my
knowledge on the avoidable precautions I would do to be able to safeguard my patients.

a. Why did you choose the course?
As a medical technology intern, I am always exposed with patient as part of my
chosen profession. Hence, I believe that patient safety is one of the things that needs to
be prioritized. Being one of the healthcare practitioners I am entitled to give the best
quality heath care service therefore, this includes assuring safety of the well being of all
the patients I am handling. Moreover, this course had helped me a lot to be more
knowledgable about patient care and quality service. In conclusion, I, a future medical
laboratory professional oath to do my best and all my capabilities in providing security
and safety for all patients.

b. How does this course help you attain your professional growth as a MLS
student?
With the help of this course, as a medical technologist student it made me realize
that by always working to enhance patient safety and quality, it can build a healthcare
system that is not just safe and effective, but also patient-centered and sustainable. This
is a shared obligation for everyone involved in healthcare, including health care
providers and patients themselves. Morever, we where align all efforts with leadership,
governance, training, technology, workflow to work together to end harm.

c. What is your stand on being a lifelong learner? Do you consider yourself a


lifelong learner?

Based on my understanding, everyone who actively seeks out new knowledge


and skills throughout their life, regardless of age, background, or occupation, is a lifelong
learner. What drives them ahead is their innate curiosity and drive to grow. Hence, a
career in medical technology is a perfect example of one that demands lifetime learning
because the medical industry is always changing and health workers need to stay up to
speed on these advancements, which calls for ongoing education. In exchange, it will
serve as a springboard for bettering patient care, career possibilities, and professional
happiness. To sum up, a lifetime education is essential to the medical technology
industry. Professionals in this field are inherently skilled and curious because their field
is continually changing, which makes them perfect for lifelong learning and development.
