ACTIVITY 1: REFLECTION
Directions: Write in a hundred words the importance of the approaches in teaching English.
Answer:
Teaching English is somehow challenging because there are lots of factors need to
consider. First in hand is the level of cognitive capacities of learners. In teaching English, we
teachers should look closely to the learning profile of the students. Their preferred learning
styles, interests and intelligences. In that case, I teacher should make sure that my approaches
being used in teaching are align to their proficiency. Next factor is oral language and literacy
level. It is common dilemma in teaching English the oral language ability of learners. Wherein
they tend to code switch the instructional language into their first language or the mother
tongue. To make them comfortable and able to express clearly the subject. On the other side,
they have difficulty in reading or pronouncing the word correctly. In that matter, there are
different approaches could be used in solving the dilemma in an English classroom teaching
Some of those are Bilingual Method, Eclectic Method, Constructive Approach, also the
Communicative Language Teaching, Direct Method, Suggestopedia, Audiolingualism, and so on.
The importance of these approaches are to develop learners’ ability to learn in such an
appropriate way. Learners will abled to foster multilingual learning when they start practicing
bilingual approach because I believe learning comes through process, specifically ascending
order. It always started on the basic from learning mother tongue to learning dual language and
up to learning numerous languages. Next importance of the approaches in teaching English is
enhancing communication skills. Personally as a teacher, I always encourage my students to
practice English speaking in my class. Especially that they are senior high school learners, I want
them to really speak English in our classroom teaching and learning process. Even if they can’t
really explain and share their thoughts and opinions in English language fluently, I used
suggestopedia in a way that I let them express their feelings and understanding through any
form of activity that they found their brain comfortable to work. Because we know that learners
have different intelligences, hence they can still show their interpretation using eclectic method
like audio-visual presentation (audiolingualism apporoach), kinesthetic activity (direct method)
to master the subject because giving like practical scenarios lead students to discover and
learn in their own way and portray it in an English language. Lastly, is to build up the schema
of the students wherein I could incorporate constructive approach. Example I let my students
work in a group for discussion and brainstorming, demonstration and think-pair-share activity.
