In a setback for India’s human rights record, the Geneva-based, United Nations-
linked Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions deferred the
accreditation of the National Human Rights Commission-India for the second year in
a row.
The decision, which can affect India’s ability to vote at the Human Rights Council
and some UN General Assembly bodies, was taken on May 1, during the meeting of
the Subcommittee on Accreditation , which included representatives from New
Zealand, South Africa, Honduras, and Greece.
The NHRC’s “A-status” has only been deferred once before, in 2016, but it was

restored in 2017. This is the first time India’s status has been suspended for two years
in a row.
The GANHRI also cited the “lack of pluralism” in the composition of the NHRC,
which has just one woman in its top body right now. While the Chairperson of the
National Commission for Minorities Iqbal Singh Lalpura is an ex-officio member, the
GANHRI had pointed out that the composition of the committee should reflect the
“diversity of the society” it operated in, indicating the lack of any member
representing India’s largest minority religions.

Eight years after concluding the general framework of cooperation on the Chabahar
port, India and Iran signed a 10-year contract for its operation, enabling operation of
the Shahid-Behesti terminal.

The Union government granted citizenship certificates to more than 300 people who
applied under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. At least 14 people who came

The Supreme Court gave a fillip to the right to personal liberty by holding that a
person summoned by a designated special court under the Prevention of Money
Laundering Act (PMLA), is presumed to be not in custody and need not apply for
bail under the draconian conditions posed by the anti-money laundering law.
The judgment limits the power of arrest by the Directorate of Enforcement after a
special court takes cognizance of a case.
The Bench said the ED would have to separately apply for the custody of a person
once he or she appears in court. The Central agency would have to show specific

GK
grounds that necessitated custodial interrogation.

In the 2024 World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without borders,

Chennai-based startup Agnikul Cosmos has achieved a remarkable feat by

successfully launching the world’s first space rocket with a single-piece three-
dimensional (3D) printed engine. his launch marks India’s first semi-cryogenic
engine-powered rocket, which was completely designed and manufactured
indigenously.
It successfully conducted the first test flight of its rocket ‘Agnibaan’ in a mission
called ‘Suborbital Tech Demonstrator’ (SOrTeD).
Agnibaan SOrTeD is India’s first launch from a private launchpad, called ‘Dhanush’,
established by Agnikul.
Vikram-S is India's first privately built rocket.
The flights of ‘Agnibaan’ — and Skyroot’s ‘Vikram’ in 2022 — herald two prospects
more valuable than commercial fortune. ISRO and/or scientists trained there have
shared technical know-how and provided physical systems for many private missions,
which these startups are now testing, cutting short the time and expenses required.
Likewise, these startups are poised now to light the way for ISRO and others,

potentially accelerating innovation in the sector.

India voted in favour of a draft UN General Assembly resolution that said Palestine
is qualified and should be admitted as full member of the United Nations and
recommended that the Security Council “reconsider” the matter “favourably”.

Delhi opened its Representative Office to the Palestine Authority in Gaza, which was
later shifted to Ramallah in 2003.
The resolution got 143 votes in favour, including by India, nine against and 25
abstentions.

The demand for adding Ladakh to the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution has
gained a lot of support in recent years. The Sixth Schedule lists parts of the Indian
Constitution that allow tribal places in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram to

of Autonomous District Councils, which can make laws about things like land,
forests, and agriculture. These councils can also set up village courts to settle small
disagreements between tribes.

India is poised to become the third nation to land on Mars with the unveiling of
Mangalyaan-2, an ambitious mission by ISRO showcasing advanced space
exploration capabilities. Mangalyaan-2 will place India alongside the US and China
as a significant player in interplanetary exploration. One of the most exciting aspects
of Mangalyaan-2 is the helicopter designed to navigate Mars’ thin atmosphere. This
rotorcraft will be equipped with scientific instruments, including the “MarBLE”

Malayalam movie Swaham, directed by Shaji N. Karun.

Actor Kani Kusruti posed with a watermelon clutch at the Cannes Film Festival,
during the screening of her highly acclaimed “All We Imagine As Light”. Amidst
Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza, this is being viewed as an expression of solidarity
with Palestinians, with the humble watermelon long considered a symbol of their
struggle. A watermelon when sliced shows the colours of the Palestinian flag — red,
green, black, and white. This makes it a useful symbol of Palestinian identity,
especially since carrying and displaying the Palestinian flag has often been barred by
Israeli authorities.

Sean Baker's 'Anora' clinched the prestigious Palme d'Or and Mohammed Rasoulof's

Palestinians marked the 76th year of their mass expulsion from what is now Israel, an
event that is at the core of their national struggle.
Palestinians refer to it as the Nakba, Arabic for catastrophe. Some 7,00,000
Palestinians — a majority of the pre-war population — fled or were driven from their
homes before and during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war that followed Israel’s
establishment.
After the war, Israel refused to allow them to return because it would have resulted in
a Palestinian majority within its borders. Instead, they became a seemingly permanent
refugee community that now numbers some 6 million, with most living in slum-like
urban refugee camps in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Niger announced that it was ending a military cooperation agreement with

Washington, saying the presence of U.S. soldiers in the country was now ‘illegal’; the

The US and Niger have agreed that American troops will leave the country "no later"

Palestine. Ireland’s Prime Minister Simon Harris of Ireland linked the recognition to
Ireland’s own freedom struggle from Britain.
Norway was involved in peace talks between Israel and Palestine for decades,
including hosting the beginning of the Oslo process, which culminated in the Oslo
Peace Accords in the early- to mid-1990s, agreements that were meant to usher in a

Armenia and Azerbaijan came to a deal on several border areas in the Nagorno-
Karabakh region that were being disputed. This agreement is a big step toward
ending problems that have been going on for decades. Nagorno-Karabakh is a
landlocked area in the South Caucasus that has been the center of a long-running
dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan ever since the Soviet Union broke up. The

The Council of Europe took a big step by adopting the Framework Convention on
Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law, also
known as the ‘AI convention’.
A ‘framework convention’ is a legally binding treaty that specifies the broader
commitments and objectives under the convention, and sets mechanisms to achieve
them.
The AI convention doesn’t create new and/or substantive human rights specific to AI.
Instead, it asserts that existing human and fundamental rights that are protected by
international and national laws will need to stay protected during the application of
AI systems as well.
