Submission Information
The Board of Senior Secondary Studies requires that students SUBSTANTIALLY complete all
assessment items. This means that students need to make a reasonable attempt at answering any
questions on the assessment items- otherwise they may be considered to have NOT completed the
assessment.

Complete the tables in PART A according to the Example given below:
For time 𝑡𝑡 minutes, the distance in metres the emu has travelled is given by 𝐸𝐸(𝑡𝑡) and the distance in
metres that the wombat has travelled is given by 𝑊𝑊(𝑡𝑡).
Complete the tables below using the first 6 digits of your Student ID: [2 marks]

As a mathematician you plan to use your knowledge of rates of change and modelling of functions to
help you guess the winner. Round answers to 3d.p
a) On the same set of axes, construct well labelled graphs (on the grid paper provided) of the
distances travelled by the emu and the wombat. [4 marks]
b) Find the average rate of change of distance for the first 3 minutes of the race for each animal.
[4 marks]
c) Find the average rate of change of distance between the 3rd and 6th minutes. [4 marks]
d) If each animal continued to maintain the same rate of change of distance that you found in part c)
for the remainder of the race; [3,3 marks]
i) Develop a linear model for the distance 𝐸𝐸(𝑡𝑡) travelled by the emu for the remainder of the
race.
ii) Develop a linear model for the distance 𝑊𝑊(𝑡𝑡) travelled by the wombat for the remainder of
the race.
NOTE: make sure you write down your model! Round all coefficients and constants to 3 d.p
You know it is unlikely that the animals will travel at the same rate for the whole race so after looking at
your graph you decide a cubic model is more appropriate than a linear model.

PART B (9 marks)
Some limits are easy to predict, either algebraically or graphically. However, some geometric situations
create limits that are not intuitively obvious. In this activity you will look at one such situation.
