1 BBA 4122: ORGANISATIONAL THEORY AND BEHAVIOUR

Pre-requisite: BBA 2122

Aim
The aim of this course is to equip students with knowledge of how people behave in the context of an
organization.

Objectives
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
 Demonstrate an understanding of key concepts and theories in organization behaviour
 Analyze and solve practical organizational problems.

Content
1. The overview of organizational behaviour
 Definitions and concepts of organizational theory and behaviour.
 The Importance of organizational behaviour in organization.
 Contrast between management and organizational behaviour.
 The historical roots of organizational behaviour

2. The foundations of individual behaviour


 Personality – definitions, development of personality, sources of personality,
personality attributes at work.
 Attitudes, organizational work related attitudes and types of behaviours at work place.
 Psychological contracts – the person job fit, individual differences.
 Organizational behaviour modification – process and steps in organizational
behaviour modifications.
 Perception in organization – basic perceptual process, perception and attribution –
theory.
 The reinforcement theory – concepts and learning theory.

3. Organizational processes and applications


 Groups in organizations – characteristics, types of groups, stages of group development
and group structures.
 Power and influence – definitions, sources of power and guidelines for using power.
 Decision making - nature of decisions, types of decisions, decision-making process,
negotiation, approaches to negotiation.
 Leadership – definition, types of leadership and leadership qualities.
 Motivations – definition, early theories of motivation, the equity theory of motivation,
expectancy theory of motivation, learning and motivation.
 Stress – definition, causes of stress, organizational stressors, consequences of stress
and managing stress at place of work.
 Organizational design – design elements, specialization, departmentalization, job
enrichment, job rotation and coordination.
 Organization culture – definition of culture, creating organization culture, emerging
issues in organization culture, managing organizational culture.

4. Communication and conflict


 Organizational communication – definitions, communication process, methods and
channels of communication, barriers of communication and improving communication
in organization.
 Organizational conflicts – types of conflicts and managing conflicts in the organization.

5. Performance management
 Nature of performance management, purpose of performance and measurement
 Individual rewards in organizations – purpose of rewards, types of rewards, linking
performance and rewards, reward systems.
 Work-life linkages: fundamental, work – life relationship and balancing work-life linkages.

6. Organizational change and development


 Forces of change, process in organizational changes, resistance to change,
organizational sources of resistance, individual sources of resistance and managing
organizational change.
 Training and development – the psychology of skills
 Team building

Four contact hours consisting of three lectures and one tutorial

Continuous assessment 50%
One assignment 20%
Two tests 30%
Final examination 50%
