FOREWORD

This self-learning kit is a ready-to-use material for the learners


to develop and enhance their skills in research. This will serve as
a guide in understanding the use of library and internet for
research.

In this learning kit, the students will gain knowledge on


the use of library and internet for research.

This learning kit is composed of three parts:

1. What Happened. This section provides activities that will


prepare learners to the discussion of the topic provided in this
material.

2. What I Need To Know. This is the discussion section of the SLK.


Exercises after the discussion are also provided to further enrich
student’s learning of the topic.

3. What Have I Learned. This portion will gauge student’s learning


and will determine how much the learner has learned.

Establish the purpose and importance of writing a


good review of related literature that conforms with
scientific and acceptable guidelines.

WHAT IS LIBRARY?

A library is a building with a collection of different


sources of information that is made accessible to
everyone for reference or borrowing. A library's
collection can include books, periodicals,
newspapers, manuscripts, films, maps, prints,
documents, micro form, CDs, cassettes, videotapes,
DVDs, Blu-ray Discs, e-books, audiobooks, databases,
and other formats.

DISADVANTAGES
• People near to it can only access it.
• Limited numbers of Books are available.
• It is costly to build a Library.
• People got addicted to it Waste a Lot of Time
in reading and give major part of time to it.

LIBRARY RULES
• No food is allowed in the Library
• Library materials must be handled with care
• Noise must be minimized to maintain a good
study environment.
• Cell phone use in the Library is not permitted.
• Games or offensive materials on Library
computers are prohibited
• Leave hats, bags, umbrellas at the Guard’s
desk
• Some Library collections which are
appropriately marked ‘Not To Be Taken Away’
shall not be removed from the Library, except
under very special circumstances and at the
discretion of the College Librarian.
• The Librarian has the right to withdraw or refuse
Library facilities to anyone who will not follow
the Library Regulations.

TIPS IN SEARCHING THE INTERNET
• Define your topic
• Think exactly what information you are looking
for.
• Choose a search engine.
- Search Engine is a program that allows you
to search the Internet for information.
Example: yahoo.com, google.com, etc…
• Know the parts of the Search Engine Results
Page (SERP).

1. Title of the webpage


2. The snippet—the short description of the
website
3. The URL—the web address of the website
4. Cached link—a link to an earlier version of
the webpage
• Search for research
- Type in search terms or key words, NOT an
entire question.
- Do not include unimportant words like the,
with, a and similar words.

- Example for search question: Which countries
usually participate in the Winter Olympics?
- Example for search terms:

Less is more
1. two or three key words will give you a
broader set of results
2. Don’t add punctuation
3. Use web friendly words. If you are searching
for medical information, use medical words.
Example: use the word--Headache
NOT “my head hurts”
