2 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
Follow these steps to configure the VAP for communication with the DIRECWAY hub.

1. Ground the VAP as shown in section 6.

2. Write down the VAP serial number located on the back label of the VAP.

3. Connect the PC and the VAP to the Ethernet hub using the 10BaseT / 100BaseT cables.

4. Power on the PC, Ethernet hub and VAP (see section 5 for connecting power to the VAP).

5. Check the Ethernet LED on the VAP and Ethernet hub to verify connectivity. See section 3 for a
description of the Ethernet LEDs on the VAP.

6. Configure the PC with an IP address in the subnet 169.254.0.0 and a netmask of 255.255.0.0.

7. Launch the VSU Main Screen (Figure 1) from the Start Menu of the PC as follows:
Start->VAP->VSU.

2

Figure 1 VSU Main Screen

8. On the VSU main screen, select Connection->Connection Type. Set the connection
type to TCP-IP.

9. Select Configure VAP->Commission VAP. This will bring up the dialog box shown in
Figure 2 . Enter the VAP serial number. The VSU will automatically derive the IP address of the
VAP from its serial number. After pressing the ‘OK’ button the commissioning screen (Figure 3 )
will automatically come up plus a change in the configured IP address of the VAP should be
observed (Figure 4 ).

Figure 2 VSU VAP serial number dialog box

Figure 3 VSU VAP Commissioning Screen

10. The address you see should look like this: 169.254.0.cd, where the last two digits depend on the
serial number that was entered. The VSU will take digits 8 and 9 of the serial number (20 in
Figure 2 ) and use it as the cd portion of the ip address. Since the serial number is given in a
hexadecimal notation it has to be converted to decimal when computing the ip address.

Figure 4 VSU TCP Settings

3
DIRECWAY Voice Appliance
Installation and Commissioning Manual

NOTE
If you are not in an isolated network, this particular IP address might already be in use. The VAP
is able to detect such a conflict and will automatically increment the ‘cd’ portion of the IP
address by 1 until an unused IP address is found

11. To verify that the connection between the VSU and VAP has been established type “version” into
the VSU command line. The VAP should respond with the version numbers of the software and
firmware it is currently running. If an error message is displayed, go to Connection->TCP-IP
and increment the “cd” portion of the IP address by 1 and check the version again. If necessary,
repeat this process until the VAP version is correctly displayed.

12. After establishing a connection with the VAP go back to the commissioning screen shown in
Figure 3 .

13. Enter the following information:

• SDL Multicast Control Channel IP address
• VSAT Enterprise IP Address (under “Default Router”)
• VAP Enterprise IP address
• Local Subnet Mask for the enterprise network
• VAP Management IP address
Then click on the SET button.
NOTE
The first three and the last item must be consistent with Vision.

14. Reset the VAP and reconfigure your PC to match the new subnet address of the VAP.

15. Connect the VAP to the DW4020/6000 via the Ethernet hub. See section 3 for details.

16. Connect a telephone to an in-service RJ11 port on the VAP back panel.

17. Verify from VSU that the VAP has loaded its software and configuration from Vision by entering
“version” at the command line. The versions reported by the VAP should be the same as those on
the Vision server, indicating that the VAP has downloaded.

NOTE
It may take a few minutes for the VAP to download its configuration, software and firmware from
Vision. Once the VAP has completed the download, it will reset. Wait until the VAP has reset
and the LED returns to flashing green before sending the “version” command to the VAP.

18. Once VAP has been loaded by Vision, set up test calls to/from the VAP to verify that the VAP is
operating correctly. Be sure to make calls on each port that is in service.

3 CONNECTING THE VOICE APPLIANCE TO THE DW4020/6000

The VAP is connected to the DIRECWAY 4020/6000 via a standard Ethernet/Fast Ethernet cable. A
proper connection between the VAP and the Satellite Terminal is indicated by the yellow LED and green
LED on the VAP RJ45 as shown in Figure 5 .
The VAP can operate in both 10BaseT and 100BaseT modes.
• If the green LED is on and the yellow LED is flashing, the connection is Fast Ethernet
(100BaseT)
• If the green LED is off and the yellow LED is flashing, the connection is Ethernet (10BaseT)
The VAP and DIRECWAY 4020 can be separated by as much as 100 meters of cable. It is not necessary

4 CONNECTING A TELEPHONE TO THE VOICE APPLIANCE

There are four standard telephone RJ11 sockets on VAP back panel as shown in Figure 5. Each socket
can be used to connect to an analog telephone or FAX machine directly to the VAP.
Each phone socket can drive up to five RENs (U.S.) or three RENs (Australian). It is not necessary to
power off the VAP when connecting a telephone line.
NOTE
Any telephone line that exits from an interior location to an exterior or remote location must pass through
a LISTED primary protector as indicated in Article 800-30 protective devices and 800-31Primary
Protective Requirements.

5 CONNECTING POWER TO THE VOICE APPLIANCE

An external power supply module is used to convert AC 110-240V to the DC voltage required by the
VAP power supply. It is connected as follows:
• Connect the external power module to the VAP power supply socket at the VAP back panel.
• Connect the external power module to AC 110 –240V via a power cord. (The VAP will
immediately power on.)
• Check the front panel LED. After five seconds, the front panel LED should be flashing green.
NOTE
A red LED indicates a VAP self-test failure. The VAP requires replacement.

6 GROUNDING THE VOICE APPLIANCE

A permanent connection must be made from the ground stud on the back panel of the VAP to Earth
ground. A minimum of 10 AWG stranded wire (or heavier-duty ground braid cable) is required for this
connection. See Figure 6.

A.1 VAP BOARD RECOVERY MECHANISM

This procedure may be used in a case that the ip address of a board has been misconfigured or forgotten.
1. Configure your PC with the IP address 192.168.1.1.
2. If not already done download the ftp server (GuildFTPd ) from the DPC web or from
www.download.com. If the server is already configured skip to step 9.
3. Run the GuildFTPd.exe to install the program.
4. Run the ftp server from Start->Program->GuildFtpd or double click on desktop icon.
5. Right click on System in the left frame of the screen and select Add Group. Select “vap” as the new
group name.
6. Right click on the new group “vap” in the left frame of the server screen and select Add User. Select
“vap” as the username and password.
7. Make sure the user vap is selected (highlighted) and click on Admin->Add Path. Change the local
path to C:\Vap and check all attributes.
8. Make sure the On/Off button in the task bar is set to “ON”. Minimize the server.
9. Download the BSP (VxWorks_v10_bsp) from the DPC web. Copy the file into the directory C:\Vap
and rename it to VxWorks.
10. Power off the VAP.
11. Power on the VAP while depressing the maintenance switch.
12. The main LED will flash red/green, the VAP will download the bsp from the PC and the LED will
turn into solid red or green.
13. The VAP is now configured with the ip address 192.168.1.2. Connect an ethernet cable and verify the
it will respond to a ping from the PC.
14. Launch the VSU and follow the procedure for commissioning a VAP outlined earlier in this
document.
Note: After entering the serial number of the VAP the VSU will automatically set the ip address for
the VAP to be 169.254.0.xx. Since this is not a standard commissioning case that address has to be
changed. To do that leave the commissioning screen up and click on ‘Connection->TCP-IP’ in the
main menu of the VSU. Set the ip address to 192.168.1.2 and confirm. Now you can continue by
filling out the commissioning screen.
15. Reboot the VAP and it should come up with the new configuration.

A.2 TROUBLE SHOOTING

Please read the following paragraph if the VAP is going to be

commissioned with a release prior to 4.2.0.52
1. All boards with a release prior to 4.2.0.52 will set there initial ip address to 169.254.0.cd+1, with cd
representing the hex interpretation of the 8th and 9th digit from the serial number. This behavior was
corrected in release 4.2.0.52.
2. All board with releases prior to 4.2.0.52 will have an additional entry in the routing table which might
cause problems in the deployment procedure. Here is how you check the routing table and delete the
unnecessary entry. Telnet to the VAP (no password required) and enter the following commands:
¾ routeShow
¾
¾ ROUTE NET TABLE
¾ Destination gateway flags Refcnt Use Interface
¾ -------------------------------------------------------------------
¾ 0.0.0.0 139.85.152.1 3 1 40 emac0
¾ 139.85.152.0 139.85.152.29 101 0 0 emac0
¾ 192.168.1.0 192.168.1.1 101 0 0 emac0
¾ -------------------------------------------------------------------
¾
¾ ROUTE HOST TABLE
¾ Destination gateway flags Refcnt Use Interface
¾ -------------------------------------------------------------------
¾ 127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1 5 0 0 lo0
¾ -------------------------------------------------------------------
¾ value = 77 = 0x4d = 'M'
¾ routeDelete “192.168.1.0”,”192.168.1.1”

VAP does not download software from Vision after commissioning

If no download occurs after successful commissioning, there is a change that some profile files from a
prior configuration have not been deleted. To verify telnet to the board and check the content of the
config directory:
¾ cd “config”
¾ ll
Make sure there are no files in this directory. If that is not the case, delete all files listed in this directory:
¾ rm “vs”
¾ rm “vt”
¾ rm “vp”
¾ rm “vl5605”
¾ …
