Human Impact

On the Hydrological Cycle

Land Use
Infiltration and Percolation
Urbanisation

increase the amount of land covered

by cement and asphalt/tarmac

water falls on these surfaces &

quickly runs off, straight into
storm drains or water courses.

This can also carry sediment and

minerals.
Deforestation

Forests tend to slow down the

surface runoff and increase
infiltration

so deforestation increases these

factors
Farming / Agriculture

Farming practices impact land cover

& soil characteristics.

Leaving soil bare tends to increase

surface runoff.

Using heavy machinery on land can

lead to compaction of the soil.

This means that the soil pore

spaces are smaller and so water
doesn't infiltrate as quickly. This
then increases surface runoff.
Changing Farming Practices

Farming practices can be adapted to

improve soil infiltration and
reduce problems of runoff.

Here is an example of a cover crop

between the harvested crop.

This reduces the soil erosion,

increases water infiltration &
fertility of the soil
